NrsngDude ------------------------------ Subject: B-Sides CD From: Nigel.Collier @ ncl.ac.uk (Nigel Collier) Date: Thu, 27 Jun 1996 12:24:11 +0100 Far be it from me to want to get too deep and meaningful BUT - listening to the B-sides CD for the first It made me extremely proud not only to be a Level 42 fan but also to be a member of this fantastic digest. The entire B-sides project is absolutely incredible, the quality of the work on the CD is quite remarkable and everybody involved deserves an enormous pat on the back for this labour of love on our behalves. The CD reminded me how talented and diverse the band have been through the years. Listening to the early tracks which I haven't heard in ages (since some of my cherished tracks were in my car when it was stolen) reminded me that not so long ago Great Britain had a group which, at its best, could rival legends like Lonnie Smith, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, Weather Report etc etc etc. I'm convinced people today who may be put off L42 by their [partly deserved] "pop" image, perpetuated by the likes of Mr Sam Taylor (sorry to bang on about him but he's typical of the British media who should be backing talented home-grown talent not brainlessly running it down) , would love some of L42's stuff - their music is certainly not out of place alongside the names mentioned above. 'Return of the Handsome Rugged Man', 'Freedom' and 'Beezer 1' reminded me of James Taylor Quartet, tongue-in-cheek supermarket/hotel lobby music cheesiness. 'Foundation & Empire' and '42' are pure, aggressive jazz-funk. Well done and thanks to those concerned. I can't find it. Can someone point me in a direction? I would actually prefer giving someone the money to get it for me than ordering it online. Winston and I seem to be having a problem with the online thing. We ordered Live at Wembley a month and a half ago, and people are already able to buy it in the stores, yet we haven't gotten ours. I'm fed up. Anyway, I'm done spewing; anyone who can help, please let me know. Tanxalot. Yeah, I did notice that. We played "Living in a Box" in and old band I was in (Bill, it was on the same tape as the L42 songs I sent you). Pretty soon I started sticking that bass line in anywhere I could. I think I managed to get a semblance of it into "Superstition", "Gravity" (James Brown), and even some Joe Jackson song we did. It is a very cool bass line and, I'm not too proud to admit, quite fancy and impresses you friends a lot! -WJG ------------------------------ Subject: Sheep From: WJGreer @ aol.com Date: Thu, 27 Jun 1996 10:37:07 -0400 >The Rolling >Stone Record Guide (for what it's worth) says that True Colors >"stumbles a bit in its attempts at Eurofunk." One time recently, I was stranded in a Casual Corner with my girlfriend. We had a disagreement as to whether a certain skirt was navy blue or black. We asked the salesperson what she thought. The salesperson looked at it, furrowed her brow, then reached for the skirt's tag. She read that the tag said, "Navy". So she turned to us and said, "It's a navy skirt". Still looked black to me. -WJG ------------------------------ Subject: Tell Me About Your Mother. . . I think you've lost the entire impact of musical passion on the "funk" style. per se. It defies definition, if you have to ask what funk is, you'll never know. Just kidding :). -Will ------------------------------ Subject: The Remix Collection From: "Lazlo Nibble" Date: Thu, 27 Jun 1996 10:01:37 -0600 (MDT) I picked this up last night (there's still one at Borders if you haven't bought it yet, Vince :-) and suddenly all is clear -- it's a Connoisseur Collection release! There guys seem to do nothing but inexpensive (but solid) remix collections. This one makes my third, the others being by ABC and Paul Hardcastle. I would have changed the tracklist a little but there are a couple of tracks that have never been on CD before and a few more that have but which I haven't been able to track down, so I'm happy. Although, at the very least, Holdswroth stuck to playing a REAL guitar on Guaranteed. I think I would've chucked the disc out the window if he'd used the SynthAxe on stuff like "A Kinder Eye" and "She Can't Help Herself." Still, the sound was refreshing, yes, but was just too over the edge. It was like they went from Boon's laid-back style to Al Murphy's rockin' style, and then somebody suggested they just go all the way and get Allan Holdsworth. If you're going to add guitar, why not add "the most"? Heck, why not get Edward Van Halen to play? No, too expensive. Anyway, I'm rambling. > really don't care to listen to it very much. For one thing, he's using a > SynthAxe instead of a real instrument, and for another, I also don't care > much for Gary Husband as a drummer (he plays on about half of this album, > and it shows). Here too I agree. I really missed Phil's playing and was quite glad to see him back on FN. Gary's playing (as Holdsworth's) went too far for the sound the band is really best at. Let's face it, (this is just my opinion) this is a funk band at heart. Their best tunes since the funk of the early 80's were songs like "Play Me" "Romance" "The Bends" and "The Sunbed Song." Again, just my $.02. Also, I don't know if this was Mark's or Gary's call, but does anyone else think the sequenced congas in "Heaven in My Hands" really detract from the song? -Rob ------------------------------ Subject: Re: The Remix Collection From: "Vince Mora" Date: Thu, 27 Jun 1996 11:18:48 -0600 (MDT) Lazlo (lazlo @ swcp.com) writes: > I picked this up last night (there's still one at Borders if you haven't > bought it yet, Vince :-) I'm cancelling my CDNow order as I type this. :-) Thanks for the heads-up! > L42 are turning into one of those acts what have twice as many compilations > and live albums out as they do "real" releases, though . . . Jakko is on the cover. Speaking of Jakko, I just got Mustard Gas and Roses: - Just Another Day - Little Town - The Devil's Dictionary - Damn This Town - The Borders We Traded - The Perfect Kiss - Saddlewoth Moor - Learning to Cry - A Handful of Pearls - Then and Now - Mustard Gas and Roses - We'll Change The World Danny Thompson: Double Bass Mick Karn: Fretless Bass Richard Barbieri: Keyboards, Synths B.J. Cole: Pedal Steel Guitar Gavin Harrison: Drums, Percussion Sam Brown: Backing Vocals Ed Poole: Bass Jakko M. Jakszyk: Vocals, Guitars, Keyboards, Flute and Programming. Excellent album with a few intrumentals, very fine guitar work and some really experimental things. There's also and EP called Kingdom OF Dust: - The Hands Of Che Guevara - Drowning In My Sleep - It's Only The Moon - The Judas Kiss Richard Barbieri: Keyboards, Synths Steve Jansen: Drums, Percussion, Computer Programming and additional rythm guitar on "Che Guevara" Mick Karn: Bass Jakko M. Jakszyk: Guitars, Vocals and additional bits and pieces. That's 3/4 of Japan in there, right on. Well, we all know that Mark's heroes were/are John McLaughlin and the Stan man, so I'm not really surprised at all. Listen to the Vulcan Princess album some more and you'll hear some Return of the Handsome Rugged Man as well. And next time you put on Schooldays, tell me if that sounds familiar ;-] (Dune Tune). It never bothered me because Mark is so unique in his style; it's a synthesis of the ol' stuff with his own style and that to me makes a talented musician. One more thing on the Holdsworth/Miller/Jakszyk situation: - AH and DM both do guitars on Guaranteed so if you got good ears and are familiar with AH you can pick out who's on what. - Jakko is on the cover Carl *********************The Answer is 42********************* (cmueller @ silicon.csci.csusb.edu) (cmueller @ inland.net) ------------------------------ Subject: The remix album, Live at Wembley + Vinyl for sale From: Mark Hughes Date: Thu, 27 Jun 1996 20:43:56 -0700 Hiya Guys Just got my sweaty mits on the newly released CD's that EVERYONE is talking about i.e. Live at Wembley and The Remix Collection and all I can say is .. Anyhow, I just wanted to thank all of those who made this CD possible. I wish that there was a way that I could say more, but WOW! This is better than the best Christmas you ever had as a kid! (1) There's a nifty manilla envelope to open up. (2) lot's of things that you can cut out and paste together; pictures of the world's greatest band of all time,(3) a really neat compilation of liner notes to read, and (4) a very cool looking metallicy-greeny-shiney-watcha-ma-doobie of a disc (for those of us who have never seen a recordable disc before) inside! And it plays like...like...nothing that I've ever heard before! For those who haven't ordered this thing yet....please see your local Neurologist! You probably have some sort of "tumor of ignorance." John, et al, thanks for all the work that was put into the release of this masterpiece. You have done a fine job, and we (the recipients) are better fans due to your efforts. I know that I still owe you the Level 42 bass instructional video, and will make you a copy as soon as I am able. This will most likely be in the next couple of weeks. My Psychiatric Rotation is making me nuts! (pun intended.) Anyhow, thanks again.
