I must warn you that Michal Payne has a VERY bad reputation with Paul Crockford. He once tries to con a whole load of fans into buying an unauthorised magazine which he said was official. I played bass for about four years, coming out of a Keyboard background, as you are. The bass is a wonderfully expressive instrument. The music theory that you've learned as a keybordist is quite useful on the bass. I bought my bass for $50 and my amp for $100. Obviously, this was not top of the line equipment, but it allowed me to get my feet wet. As far as playing an instrument with no background, I am currently waiting on delivery of my Chapman Stick. If you're curious about playing/learning an instrument, start looking in pawn shops, the classified ads, etc. If you start out at the top, buying the newest equipment, and things don't work out, that's a long fall. If, however, you are able to make a minimal investment, then you can get your feet wet w/o drowning. -- michael damian jeter I don't believe in destiny, Or the guiding hand of fate. United by a common bond we will strive to achieve our ultimate goals, Lazlo will compile a full world discogpahy, I will find my cherished rarities 'Haunted House, Nothing More To Say, The Happening, Night Train, Morning', Takeo will buy one of Marks basses, Pats screen saver will be issued as standard on all PC's; all these things must come to pass before finally, in one last ditch attempt all Level 42 fans will crowd into Mark garden in Wooten, on the Isle of wight demanding the group be reformed, and suddenly due to all the positive energy in one huge explosion all level 42 fans will become one SUPERFAN with 400 ears each one constantly listening to a different song or mix and kneeling before the band constantly saying, "The Chinese Way, who knows what they know, the Chinese legend grows" for no apparent reason. And after 7 years the beast from Q magazine will be unleashed to destroy all the SUPERFAN had fought for, in that time many will dessert the group, turning to Ace of Base and 2 Unlimited for their musical fulfilment, and only those who stand firm till the end constantly sayig, "The Chinese Way, who knows what they know, the Chinese legend grows" will be saved. After the 7th day of th reign of Q magazine, four horsemen will arrive and drive out the threat of Q magazine one with his mighty bass guitar, one with a minimoog, the other a cymbal and drumsticks and the third an electric guitar. All these things will come to pass. Only joking! But maybe everyone will get back together one day? Well Im busy looking for a job at the moment, I have an interview today (tuesday at 9.30 GMT) and one on Wednesday at 10.00. Hopefully with a wage I will be able to buy a whole load of Stuff. Someone posted yesterday that Children Say is crap. I strongly disagree!! Even though it is a more pop-like song than Sandstorm or 88 (which are two of my favorites) it still incorporates the Level flava. Part of the beauty of being a Level 42 fan is appreciating why others like different eras of the band. I am on record as despising The Chinese Way, as well as most of the Guaranteed release, and I am mostly a fan of their jazz-funk early period, but I can see why others would differ on what they like. The one thing I love about this list is that we are so diverse in our musical tastes, and we are from all over the world. I will agree that their funk and jazz-funk periods were better, though. What do you all think? Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: B-sides THANK YOU!! From: Marc_Dupuis @ MADISONUSA.CCMAIL.CompuServe.COM Date: 24 Jun 96 10:06:29 EDT I GOT IT!! THANK YOU!! The liner notes are really cool, nice touch on the packaging. And like everyone else says, great job on the mastering. This was just not a CD burn, it was a very strong engineering effort, and if you're still waiting for yours, HA HA! But it will be worth the wait. Just barely have gotten into it, but the instrumentals really struck me as being totally different than anything I've heard from them before. What just goosed the bejesus out of me was Phil's playing on The Return of the Handsome Rugged Man. Kee-racky, it sounds like Cobham! I mean his sound and his speed and accuracy - I thought it was Cobham. It really points out how much reserve the man has usually. Lot's of Corea-esque Synth soloing by Mike in the earlier stuff. His playing and role seems to have changed a lot over time. I think he's the unsung hero of this band. "The Chant Has Begun" and (even worse) "Hot > Water" are almost unbearable. On the other hand, "Micro Kid" could be > the best pop song of the 80's. I'm afraid that I can't agree at all. I do like their pop-type stuff. After all, Something About You was the first song that I'd heard--however just because it was their most popular doesn't mean it's my favorite. It's their funkyness that transformed my liking them into a full-blown admiration for their talents. I agree that the Chant Has Begun is not a very good song, however Hot Water rocks. But look at some of their older tunes--Mr. Pink, 43, The Persuit of Accidents, and (now after hearing the B-Sides Disc) songs such as Forty-Two and Beezer One. Tell me that Running in the Family is better than any of those songs (err, please don't). Now then--speaking of the B-Sides disc--I got mine on Friday! John, you rock. I think you may have to show all these messages of appreciation to your fiancee to explain just why you've been so busy lately! As for the toons, I was very dissapointed with Freedom, but I think it will grow on me. I was also dissapointed with Instrumental Love (sounds like the stuff you hear in the Grocery Store). But, Forty-Two rocks (reminds me very much of some of the older Stanley Clarke stuff) and Beezer One is probably now my very favorite Level 42 song (except for Leaving Me Now which will always have a very special place in my heart--besides I have to contradict everything I said above about their older stuff being better than the new stuff). Leaving Me Now has gotten me through many a breakup, and as I am now in the midst of another one (as of two days ago :( ), it will be getting me through another one. The sound quality is impressive. Just more proof of how useful a Macintosh really is! Though I wish that I had gotten off my DAT with the Return of the Handsome Rugged Man because I think mine is a little bit cleaner at the end. Did you send Loz the disc that I payed for? If so, then I should be getting a book from him soon. > Jakko Jakszyk was > the guitarist for the Guaranteed tour (also on album cover, > eventhough Alan Holdsworth played) My understanding was that he actually only played on the track "If You Were Mine" -- at least that's the only track on the album that has that distinctive Allan Holdsworth sound (like it or not). -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Daniel James - Database Administrator djames @ statsci.com Data Analysis Prod Div of MathSoft (formerly StatSci) (206) 283-8802 x284 ------------------------------ Subject: Level 42 never made "Crappy" Song!!!
