Well, now this gives us all yet another L42 holy grail to chase. There's music out there we haven't heard yet, and now we have to figure out how to get ahold of it. -Will ------------------------------ Subject: The Austin Back Room show From: WJGreer @ aol.com Date: Fri, 21 Jun 1996 08:32:06 -0400 > Austin Back Room show was his last with them before he left the 1st time > and his last appearence with them in the US. I was there, and I know the Tucker was there, along with DJ-RJ. Mike, counting you, that makes at least 4 of us. It is pretty ironic, but then again, if Level 42 played anywhere in the US right now, I'd figure out a way to get there too (although I did live in Austin in '87). Hey, all you Brit types must be starting to think that Austin is a pretty happening spot, eh? ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V96 #173 From: Jdelsav @ aol.com Date: Fri, 21 Jun 1996 08:42:26 -0400 In a message dated 96-06-21 06:05:31 EDT, you write: >> They have all their albums + Jakkos. Dan ------------------------------ Subject: Small World From: WINMAN @ gnn.com (WINSTON WALKER) Date: Fri, 21 Jun 1996 09:02:05 Laurence, I cracked up reading your message regarding the Hotline being updated. Here's the deal. I have been in touch with Mike Payne, via phone, since his trip to New York for the LevelFest. He showed pictures of his trip to Mark King's house, with him, Mark and his best friend Ian. Well Ian is the source of most of the great material Mike has been able to get his hands on. I spoke to Mike yesterday and he gave me the newest update on Mark & Mike's solo projects, as well as a double live CD from the the "Royal Albert Hall" gig. Ian told Mike that it is tentatively scheduled for a March '97 release. To make a long story short, I finally asked the last name of Ian. Mike informed me it is Buck! As I say, small world. Mike also passed along some more info, He says that Ian Buck is credited in the new "Live at Wembley" Liner notes as the writer. Is this true? I haven't received my copy yet. Aparently their is also going to be another live CD. This one from the Hammersmith Odeon concert. Perhaps a release date of Dec. '96. Anyway, take care! From: Mr Fish Date: Fri, 21 Jun 1996 15:02:05 +0100 (BST) Well, it's been fun.. but it's time I left as I will be beaten up by my system manager if I don't unsubscribe to the digest. I may see some of you on the Isle of Wight soon, but otherwise farewell, goodbye, adios etc etc.. I will subscribe again if and when I get another email account. 'till then... Cheers, David Goodall WE3 (Informatics - University Of Portsmouth) ------------------------------ Subject: funk vs. pop From: "egoss @ skidmore.ED" Date: Fri, 21 Jun 96 11:35:11 EDT I wonder if anyone agrees with me in that L42's best songs tend to be its most commercial. IMHO, they are better off focusing on their "pop" side than on "funk." When they attempt to get funky, the results are often embarrassing. "The Chant Has Begun" and (even worse) "Hot Water" are almost unbearable. On the other hand, "Micro Kid" could be the best pop song of the 80's. ------------------------------ Subject: What is he saying? From: wrholley @ burgoyne.com Date: Fri, 21 Jun 1996 10:10:14 -0600 I have a question. In the song Leaving Me Now, Mark sings the line: "Some people kill for less, yet I'd still die for you gladly." But if you listen, it does not sound like 'gladly,' instead it sounds like 'glassy.' Does anyone know if Mark messed up and they never redid the song or what? This is a question I've been pondering about for 10 years now! Wes ------------------------------ Subject: B-Sides CD is EXCELLENT!!! From: bshepard @ bmsc.com (Brian D. Shepard) Date: Fri, 21 Jun 96 09:32:12 PDT My thanks to everyone involved in putting this B-side CD together! I just received it yesterday from John and haven't quit listening to it since. The quality of the CD is incredible, as is the artwork for the cover. My cover came in B/W, not color, but who cares! It's what is on the CD itself that matters! Great job everyone! BTW, if anyone in the San Francisco area has a lead on where to buy the Remixes CD or the Live At Wembley CD, please e-mail me. I'm benging on L42 and I can't stop! Cheers and my Level Best to everyone! -- Brian D Shepard bshepard @ bmsc.com 6/21/96 9:32:12 AM PT ------------------------------ Subject: Re: "please allow me to introduce myself..." + Jakko From: "Carl Mueller" Organization: none Date: Fri, 21 Jun 1996 11:17:57 -0800 Sorry to barge in, everybody, but I can't just sit here and be quiet while all this LFT talk is going on. I'm Carl and I live in Hemet, CA. "Love Games" did it for me (nov '81) and my first show was apr 30, '82. Now that the B-side CD is out (still like to get one), I guess my vinyl collection at least still has some cool art work ;-] I do have some tapes from radio shows/concerts and a Namm show that Mark did with a drum machine (oct '85). I have the Wembley CD and, yeah, the bookie could've been done a bit better, but still, it's a nice tribute to Al. Here and there the editing is a bit obvious though, and NO bass solo... Anyway, to answer Mr. Jeter's question: Jakko Jakszyk was the guitarist for the Guaranteed tour (also on album cover, eventhough Alan Holdsworth played). He has an EP called Kingdom of Dust with 4 songs; the rest of the band is Karn, Jansen, Barbieri, ie Japan. The album is called Mustard Gas and Roses. All of this is brilliant stuff.... Sorry if this is old news to some, but we got to start some- where, Carl *********************The Answer is 42********************* (cmueller @ silicon.csci.csusb.edu) (cmueller @ inland.net) ------------------------------ Subject: New member intro From: Bernard Blundell Date: Sat, 22 Jun 1996 00:08:31 -0700 Hi, my name's Bern, I live in Coventry, England. I'm 27 and I've been a Level 42 fan since about 1986. I got 'flu on Christmas eve 1986 and a mate of mine chucked some tapes my way, so I'd have something to listen to in bed. Those tapes were 'A physical presence' and 'Level 42'. Every since then, I've been hooked. Albums: All (non-compilation) albums, 'Influences' and 'Changes' Absolutely LOVE Mike's 'Changes' album, but then I'm a bit of a synth-pop freak (also {still} into Howard Jones). Fave track: 'The spririt is free' Fave L42 album: varies from week to week, but currently 'Forever now', and in particular 'Love in a peaceful world'. Wow - what a chilled song. Of course, 'physical presence' is THE all-time classic album. I've got a lot of time for a band that breaks the '120 bpm, 3.5 minute, 4/4, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, mid-8, chorus to fade' junk. I play keyboard/piano, and have lots of L42 manuscript. Always been tempted to get a bass, but I know nothing about them and could quite easily buy a heap of junk without knowing it. Other fave tracks: 'Mr Pink' (live), 'Love games' (live), 'Man', 'Silence', 'Two solitudes' (!), 'Eyes waterfalling', but NOT MUCH OF THE 'WORLD MACHINE' album - sorry. Been to see the guys once, 1988, at Whitley Bay (Tyneside, England). Mike flunked his first line in 'heaven in my hands', Mark swore (a lot). Hmm, flying bassist and saxophonist. Very strange. Great live, but no live album (?) since 'physical presence'. Shame. What more can I say? I'm generally into synth-pop and funky stuff [my fave film is 'Car Wash']. Quite like a bit of Pino Palladino, like what 'Seal' does and think Disney cartoon sound tracks are phenomenal (esp. Ashman/Menken [eg. B&TB]).
