Hansen Austin '87 Mikep3099 ------------------------------ Subject: Marks Album From: laurence green Date: Thu, 20 Jun 1996 12:01:45 PDT Hi All, Its me again and I must be the bearer of bad news. Mark has abandoned his solo project completely and is starting again from scratch. Regardless of whatever he said in the documentary on meridian TV entitled 'The Pier' He thinks the album was too angry and he has scrapped all the songs which will now never be heard. This means he will be composing 10 - 12 new songs for his solo album which will now be put back consideably. Last night I spoke to Simon Carson, one of the worlds top 5 fans, he is going to be updating the hotline for Crockford together with Ian Buck, another collector. Simon Carson Has nearly 150 live concerts, he is trying to compile a complete world discography but he had no idea Lazlo had already done one. I must say I was dissapointed with the packaging for live at wembley, I expected large pictures but the rare photos were the size of stamps! WRT that review of the album, most reviewers in these trendy magazines think its clever to slag off old bands who were never too fashionable, his refrence to Marks appearence is typical, if the group all wore Calvin Klein gear he would have said they were brilliant. Just because they dont use computers to turn out repetitive monotonous drones he doesnt like them. Whilst I agree with Lazlo that we cant expect everyone to like Level 42 this guy showed no appreciation for the fact that basically a lot of people liked Level 42 in the last 16 years because of their music, and they were a down to earth different kind of group altogther. I expect he would make similar comments about any group who isnt, at this moment in time, considered good by the men in suits ie Oasis, Blur, Fugees, Lightning Seeds etc etc etc etc etc etc. Well, writing to everyone on the digest has been a good constant for me over the last year, Im not leaving or anything but the longer I leave it the more chance there is that me account will be cancelled. If anyone want a biography just drop me a line, if you want to know how to pay check a back digest (94). Im sorry I take a long time with tapes but I have a lot on anyone I owe tapes will get them soon enough. My brother got that at the last Bela Fleck show I went to, in Concord, NH about 2 months ago. I agree, that CD is fantastic. Wooten is absolutely brilliant on bass. I got to meet him and talk with him a bit after the show, he's an extremely nice guy, very laid back, very personable. Plus, he's the only guy I've seen who can shake his bowler off his head, catch it with his foot and flip it back onto his head, all while doing a bass solo that makes your eyes pop out of your head in pure amazement. :) Truly a unique human being. From: Mr Fish Date: Thu, 20 Jun 1996 15:49:49 +0100 (BST) This will probably be my last post as we all have to unsucscribe to any mailing lists we're on - a "bummer" I think. Anyway.. what I need to know is if anyone is still intending to go to the IOW again. The last I heard was that some people were planning on going on 6th July.. is this still true?? Anyway, if so I may be able to come along (although I start work on the following Monday, so I'm not sure yet). If any of you fine people would care to fill me in then I'd be really appreciative.. and could you mail me directly [sis3516 @ sis.port.ac.uk] as I will be unsubscribing tommorow (he says, wiping away the tears). Well, thanks in advance.. Cheers, David ps. Live At Wembly is available (at least it is in Tower Records, London), as is The Remixes (also Tower), also HMV are stocking Turn It On - so now you know, if didn't already. From: Rob Kadel Date: Thu, 20 Jun 1996 11:55:17 -0400 (EDT) Hi, all! I just got my copy of As Years Go By from John in the mail. I just want to say to him, and to all those who helped with burning discs, providing material, and so on, that THIS THING ROCKS! Don't try to tell me that any of this stuff was originally on vinyl -- it cleaned up so well that the whole thing sounds like it was just taken off a DAT in the studio. And to include all the stuff for a CD jacket as well -- geez, John, where do you find the time!? This is great! Well, I'm back to listening now. -Rob ************************************************************************ Rob Kadel Department of Sociology Institutional Planning and Research 404-727-7510 Emory University 404-727-0765 ------------------------------ Subject: Level 42 spam is good for you in Seattle From: Daniel James Organization: Statistical Sciences Date: Thu, 20 Jun 1996 10:41:37 -0700 > Anyway, I really love this album, and I was wondering, is this album > available new anywhere, or is it a "rarity" (is it out of print?) > Thanks for any responses! When I purchased my first copy (about 9 years ago), I found it from a local CD dealer who usually had a much better selection than the average music store. A few years later, it started showing up at places like Musicland, the Warehouse, etc as a "Nice Price" CD. Then, it disappeared altogether, and when my first copy disappeared from my collection, I found that I had to order it as an import. My first copy cost me about $11 new, the second copy about $21. Rare or not, it's an excellent album. If you like this album, I suggest looking for "The Early Tapes" which is the real first album (er technically Strategy is, but that doesn't really count now, does it?). > I sent mail to the digest from my other email address, but I didn't > see it; so here it is again. I would guess that the SPAM filter caught it. It keeps messages from non-subscribed email address out (thank you Eric!). > Now, let me introduce myself. I am truly amazed at the quality of the entire disc; the sound itself (you'd never know except for a few places that songs came from LPs!), the cover (in color!!!) all the way down to the "AAD" and "Compact Disc" symbols on the back... wonderful job! I'd never heard most of the songs on this disc and so I'm very grateful to you more fortunates who do have larger collections of the rare stuff for being so generous in "sharing the wealth"! I'd go on and on, but I'm pretty sure someone else will post more superlatives! I was there as well and have related my stories about that day and night on this list and to others in email many times before. I am just curious as to how many of us were at this show. Loz has told me that Phil played a couple of dates with the band just before or after Forever Now came out but the Austin Back Room show was his last with them before he left the 1st time and his last appearence with them in the US. He was in a bad way after that show. Who all was there??? t is a tiny place so wouldn't be ironic if there were 10 or more of us there. Also, I think I will be getting Live At Wembley and The Remixes 2 early next week and will post the specifics as soon as I get them, at least about the remixes, as soon as I get them. Cheers, Mike
