Campbell ------------------------------ Subject: Victor Wooten From: Nigel.Collier @ ncl.ac.uk (Nigel Collier) Date: Wed, 19 Jun 1996 16:29:47 +0100 I recently aquired 'A Show of Hands' by Victor Wooten (19.95 sterling on import through HMV) following a recommendation by a subscriber (sorry, I forget who). It is a technically fantastic album - for those of you who have heard any Stanley Jordan, this album sounds VERY VERY much like him - but what Jordan does with 6 strings, Victor does with 4!!!. Victor plays effectively two extremely complex lead bass lines simultaneously by hammering on. He also slaps and pops exquisitely but don't buy this album expecting funk 'cos the general sound of the album is much more Stanley Jordan than Mark King. The CD is predominantly a bass solo project so the bass is just about the only instrument played - and with no overdubs - so one four string provides everything including percussion - a brilliant example for bassist connoisseurs of what's possible with one electric bass. Mind you, Wooten has big teeth and afro hair so I don't know what Sam Taylor would make of his bass playing.... From: "Michael Monsen" Date: Wed, 19 Jun 96 09:40:50 Hello all! Yesterday I went in to a local used CD shop, (one in which I hadn't been for over two years.) I just walked in the door, and started looking at their Jazz section, and perusing their Spyro Gyra stuff. Anyway, the salesperson walked up to me and asked if he could help me out, and just for fun I said "do you have anything by Level 42?" He said he didn't think so, but he'd go look. In just about 30 seconds he returned with a used CD and said "All we've got is their self-titled album" and handed me their first album. I was shocked, as I had never expected to find this album anywhere, let alone in Provo, Utah. It was pretty scratched up, but I took it over to their "listening booth" and popped it into a CD player, and the CD played fine! (Thanks, Phillips, for wonderful CD technology!!) So, I plopped down my $8.99 for the CD and walk away a very happy man. So, yesterday I was finally able to hear "43", and some of the other songs I've read about on the digest. I've got the Level Best album, but I had no idea which songs were their earlier songs, etc. One observation that I've made is that parts of "43" sound a lot like Spyro Gyra to me, very Jazzish. (Your opinion may vary.) Anyway, I really love this album, and I was wondering, is this album available new anywhere, or is it a "rarity" (is it out of print?) Smashie, a.k.a. David Wilkins (?) from the U.K. is in the colonies (Boston) for a spell. I may get together with him (+ Eric?) this w/e. If you're interested in a Boston Levelfest, let me know. (here, or Bruce_Conrad @ BCSMac.Org). In an unrelated event, I recorded some songs for the cover cassette w/Rolfie V. and my friend Jeff last night. ...it feels electric to me... ------------------------------ Subject: movie From: Jdelsav @ aol.com Date: Wed, 19 Jun 1996 13:21:48 -0400 In a message dated 96-06-19 10:57:33 EDT, you write: >>If they made a movie of Mark and Mike's Past Lives, who would you like to >>see play them ?? > >How about Val Kilmer as Mark, and Pete Sampras as Mike :) PETE SAMPRAS!!!!! I LOVE IT!!! I've thought that Mike has looked like Pete for years. However, Val is too tall to play Mark. Maybe Mark could play Mark! I'm following it now for a few weeks now and I think that is gool. Well I'm a guy from Utrecht in The Netherlands, and my nickname is Tjeerdie Peerdie (Tjeerd is my real name), and I saw Level 42 for the first time on tv. It was I think in 1984, it was a broadcast by our network Veronica. They had a show in Ahoy in Rotterdam with Level 42, Sade and Talk Talk. I was in the mood for Sade but after I thought Sade Level 42 game up and that was the first time I saw Level 42 play. That was it for me. This music hit me in my bones. The funky bass form Mark, and the nice voice from Mike! The next day I ran to the record shop to buy a Level 42 album. it was Standing in the light. After that I bought everything wich I can lay my hands on. I bought today Live at Wembley. It sounds a bit like the first time. So this is I think enough for the first time! Campbell" Date: Wed, 19 Jun 1996 20:30:45 -0700 (PDT) I'm having the time of my life as I relax and listen to the B-sides CD I just got in the mail today! Thanks to ALL OF YOU for making this such a special day for YAL (yet another levelhead). The cover artwork is great and the sound of the CD is unparalleled! Now, let me introduce myself. I'm 'rac' or Robert (no Bob here), now hailing from the great state of Washington. Born in Oklahoma, I was introduced to Level42 during my 3 years, 2 months and 18 days in Germany (a country I really do love!). I was fortunate enough to catch L42 in action in Frankfurt am Rhein and have all their released CDs. I've even got Mark King's solo album -- a must-have for bass enthusiasts. Alas, poor me, all I can play in the stereo, having traded so much of my life for time spent molding modern technology (translation: trying to figure out how to give my toaster it's own IP address so my pop-tarts could be automated). Now, I'm married to a wonderful woman, who, bless her heart, could distinguish L42 from a passing truck. Anyway, thanks again to all of you out there who made this CD possible!!! -Robert A.
