I've been calling them asking for some older Level 42 to be played. This is great!!! I do have a question about that song. I only have the tape of "Level 42" and it has a shorter version of Turn It On. Is the longer version on CD or is this some hard to find remix? Chad ------------------------------ Subject: US vs UK From: "Heather Swanson" Date: Wed, 17 Jan 1996 16:57:52 EST Just me again... I read a message from Cliff today asking if there's any difference in the sound quality between the Uk and the US versions of the "World Machine" CD. I have both, and I haven't actually noticed a difference at all--they're both crystal clear! It's not necessarily that they're truncated on the compilation album, it's that they were truncated in the original single release. Two reasons for them doing this: to encourage airplay (long songs = less airplay), and to encourage fans to buy the album to hear the "complete" version. It's a long-standing practice since songs started getting longer in the late 60's. >Addressing a few things this AM. I was very disappointed when I got the Level Best Video and heard shortened versions of some of the songs. Although, I like the overall mix of Leaving Me Now, and It's Over, I really get annoyed trying to watch To Be With You Again. I was psyched when I found a used copy of Family of Five, 'cause I thought that this being the "Real" compilation would have the full-length versions... I was again, very disappointed. ------------------------------ Subject: Interseting places hearing L42 From: Fabfriday @ aol.com Date: Wed, 17 Jan 1996 12:49:26 -0500 Are there any fans in NJ? If so, where? Aside from the radio, what other places have you all heard L42 played? I heard LEVEL BEST in The Limited with my sister not too long ago, TAKE A LOOK in a Burger King, CHILDREN SAY and SET ME UP on 4-Track store tapes where I used to work, An insrumental version of CHILDREN SAY in a cheesy Pennsylvania radio commercial, LIVE AT WEMBLY aired on MTV a few years back, GUARANTEED was premired on NY's 102.7 in August 1991 (US release FEB 1992), NY's CD-101.9 is a jazz station that played TWO SOLITUDES and CHILDREN SAY, And, in college we had the opportunity to lip-sync professional quality music videos for free, and of course, I did a L42 song, LESSONS IN LOVE.. I remember hearing SOMETHING ABOUT YOU in some 80's movie... I was during a scene where two people were listening to a radio in their car, and that song was on... The first time many of us heard the song... Anyone remember that film? FAB ------------------------------ Subject: Corrections, Tid Bits, Comments....... From: GVermette @ aol.com Date: Wed, 17 Jan 1996 12:12:26 -0500 Hi Folks! Dolt! Idiot! Moron! Did I actually say my favorite song was on "Staring at the Sun"!?! I'm sorry. I should proof-read my entries before I submit them! Yes, "People" was indeed on "Standing in the Light" NOT "Staring at the Sun"! (They do sorta have a similar ring to the title, huh?) Oh well, I'm embarassed again. RolfieV, sorry about the bad apples, I'm just curious when I see the "252 subscribers" slug at the head of the digest, and recognize only a few contributors on a daily basis. I don't want people to be intimidated from adding their own input, especially if they're totally new to the band. Competition, however, does lead to some tasty bits of info! Regarding the two versions of "World Machine", although there is no difference in sound quality, there is an immense difference in content! I must agree with Lazlo, GET THE UK VERSION! This is the same thing that was happening to the Beatles in the US. Rather than release an album as the artist intended, every release in the US has to be some sort of "greatest hits" compillation. "Hot Water" and "The Chant has Begun" have no place on World Machine. Neither does the radio edit of "Something About You" which has been pasted at the beginning, rather than in it's original spot. I don't know I should stop ranting. Last issue, Bruce Conrad, you ordered the new Forever Now release, and "Tired of Waiting" is your favorite new song? Well I'm sorry to say, that's one of the songs that DIDN'T make it to the new album, which is surprising. I really liked it too! Then again, I wasn't all that bothered by the "Holy Grail, Holy Cow " line. Both the Grail and the cow are symbols of immortality in Christianity and Hinduism respectively. I hope that's where they were going with it. Otherwise, it sounds kinda silly. -Greg Vermette (Bad lyric - "And I try so hard to fake it, 'cause it took so long to bake it, and I'll never know that recipe again.....Oh Nooooooooooo!" - MacArthur Park - Donna Summer) ------------------------------ Subject: Avid US Fan Collection: From: Fabfriday @ aol.com Date: Wed, 17 Jan 1996 11:32:38 -0500 In the USA, the only L42 albums still in print are as follows: 1) World Machine US Version 2) Running In The Family 3) Level Best 4) Guaranteed 5) Forever Now (Soon to be released under Griffin) That's it!!!!! For all of you here in the US, you understand the frustration of trying to find all the albums you want. It's taken me years of searching, but I HAVE found a lot. If you look hard enough and frequently enough. Here's what I HAVE found and own: LEVEL 42, PURSUIT OF ACCIDENTS, STANDING IN THE LIGHT, TRUE COLOURS, A PHYSICAL PRESENCE (UK), WORLD MACHINE (US), RUNNING IN THE FAMILY (UK Single), RUNNING IN THE FAMILY, STARING AT THE SUN, ON THE LEVEL (UK), LEVEL BEST, THE REMIXES (UK), GUARANTEED (UK Single), GUARANTEED, OVERTIME(UK Single), MY FATHER"S SHOES (UK Single), ON A LEVEL (UK), FOREVER NOW (UK RCA), ALL OVER YOU (UK Singles, Blue and Red), FOREVER NOW (UK Resurgence).... RUNNING IN THE FAMILY PLATINUM EDITION (2nd half on vinyl), INFLUENCES (Mark King, UK), TIN MAN (Boon, UK), WORDS OF A MOUNTAIN (Wally Badarou), HITS 94 VOLUME ONE (UK, Radio edit of FOREVER NOW), 12x12 Vol. 2 (UK, HOT WATER Remix).... Plus the Videos for LIVE AT WEMBLY, FAIT ACCOMPLI, and LEVEL BEST..... So, if you are a US\CANADIAN fan frustrated by the lack of albums here.... Look hard, and you may find some good stuff...... The two versions of It's Over are similar, but not exactly the same. Interesting thing, on the CD5 it's labelled "Something About You (Coup D'Etat Version)." I don't know what the labeller was drinking when he/she wrote that... Anyway, you also get the SAY video, same as appears on the Level Best video. >And finally, Is it worth getting the UK version of the World Machine album? YES. As mentioned in the biography Boon was called Boon because he never cried and was therefore a "Boon" to the family (Hmm). In the first verse of GMIAS there is a line which says "Of a summers day I spent with you" "With a child who never learned how to cry" The song was written by Phil - so I think this is a reference to Boon, the rest of the song I think is an attempt by Phil to say how he had to shoulder emotional burdens in his family, and how it affected his later relationships. Listen to the song again - see if you come to the same conclusions. - Another reason I like this song is the keyboard riff after the verse - this is powerful emotional playing from Mike. On another note Jakko also does the music for "Birds of a Feather" (British comedy series). And sometimes appears with "Raw Sex" on "French & Saunders" (another comedy show). Also over the holidays I heard "Love in a Peaceful World", "Heart on the Line"!!, and "Forever Now" on Eastenders - there must be someone on that show who is a real fan..
