I mean, when a digest is almost 37K, I know someone has goofed and included the entirety of at least one previous digest. Oughta be a law against it! Second, Nigel's review of the Q review--RIGHT ON!!! That review has absolutely nothing to do with L42, and shows very little sign of anything other than how fashionable it is to dismiss the previous era with flippancy and gloss. Isn't it funny that the only two songs he reviewed are the two he didn't actually have to be all that familiar with the band to mention? But you've gotta admit, L42's success came back to haunt them (as Don't Bother Me suggests). Whether this attests to their musical talents or not is another issue (then again, so much of the attribution of musical talents is about popularity and public perception). Still I've gotta side with Nigel and disagree with Lazlo--the person writing that review showed absolutely no sign of being a reviewer. Fine, he hated the 80's, he hated Wembley Arena (and Lazlo, please note that this is Wembley Arena and make the relevant changes to the discography, if you would), and maybe didn't even like their music. Hardly a reason to be that nasty. Then again, who is he really going to dissuade from buying that album in the first place? Fortunately, it appears that this reviewer's career is not going to span 15 years, five top 5 albums or 50 appearances on TOTP! I just hope he is reviewing still when Hootie's star goes falling through the floor (which should be any minute now), then he can tell us how musically devoid and poseurishly minimalistic the whole of the 90's has been. PS: thanks for the Live at Wembley catalogue #, Loz. And John Venzon, pop yer head in on the status of the CDs when you get a chance. ------------------------------ Subject: Live @ Wembley - some info From: ben @ flump.netkonect.co.uk (Benedict Poole) Date: Fri, 14 Jun 1996 12:13:44 +0000 Hi all Following on from Maarten's mail, I received the following info this morning: 'A long awaited Level 42 live album hits the shops on May 28th... recorded at Wembley Arena in January 1989 during the Staring at the Sun tour... Their farewell concert, recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in October 1994 will be released next year...' Catalogue info: WFRCD5/WFRMC5 (ie for CD and tape) distributed by Grapevine/Polygram. Maarten already gave the direct ordering address of World Famous records. The flyer *then* goes on to say that the album will be released JUNE 17th, and also gives a track listing, which I've compared with the fan club tape of the same gig: LIVE AT WEMBLEY FAN CLUB TAPE Heaven... Heaven... To Be... To Be... Children... World Machine Silence Children... It's Over Silence Over There Bass solo Man Tracie Love Games It's Over Take a Look Man Something... Chinese Way Running... Lessons... Chinese Way Somewhat different huh? Anyway, TTFN! I know what I have to say isn't really about the band but it concerns the list! I've noticed that this is the second digest in a row that people have simply annotated when sending a message to the list. So everyone ends up getting a repeat of the day before's digest then a new message at the end - if you see what I mean!! Please can you not do that. I know I'm new to the list but aren't other people a wee bit fed up. It means that i have to keep my finger on the down cursor button for ages until I find something new. Sorry to be a moan... on a Level 42 note though - i'm going to be in Pittsburgh soon. Are there any good record stores that sell anything by the band that i can't get here in the UK? Cheers Saffron ------------------------------ Subject: Gary/JazzMasters From: WINMAN @ gnn.com (WINSTON WALKER) Date: Fri, 14 Jun 1996 08:46:55 As far as the Paul Hardcastle "JAZZ MASTERS" group goes, Gary barnacle played on the 1st album. He plays Sax & Flute on all the tunes and co-wrote 11 of the 12 featured tracks. Winston ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V96 #166 From: "Tucker A. I agree >that the music was really loud - the concert was at a hard rock club. But >Phil seemed to play great. Hmmm. Shows what I know. > >-WJG I was there too! And you are correct sir. Austin is far from hick and a three hour drive from the "Big D." But, hey, I can imagine when your on valium.... The forum was small which I think only added exclusiveness. Wow! To see them again in this type of venue. A true highlight for me. A rare experience here in the states. I don't think it was more than a few hundred people. Am I close to right? I had met some folk from Polygram at a record event in Dallas and got to talking about Level 42. They could not beleive my enthusiasm let alone knowledge (which is nowhere near some of y'all) of the band. They said they needed more fans like me here in the states (well they can find them here on the digest!). They insisted I see them in Austin and gave me two passes for the event! Course I was wettin' my Wranglers. I arranged it for me to just happen to have to be in Austin on business that week. All expenses paid (my mama raised no fools!). I loved it! Got to sit right on the stage. Left side. Right at the feet of Mike. Yee Ha! Right before the show I was scootin' round the place and stumbled across Mark sitting in a back room all alone puttin on a pair of boots (nothing we would wear here in Texas but boots, nevertheless, those ankle high, fassionlike kind). B.S.'ed with him a little and he made some smart ass remark (which I understand is typical of him and he has a great sense of humor, comments?) about god or being god or something religious oriented. It was funny and we laughed. Is he religious? I'm about as close to atheist as you can get and got the impression he was not at all religious but could be wrong. Whatever floats your boat, makes no mind to me. To each his own. Anyway, quite a memorable experience and one that will forever be a part of my Level 42 life. Polygram (Polydor) even send me a couple CD's and video. Of course I already had the CD's and gave them away to a now devout L42 fan. Just wanted to share that with y'all. But never expect me to share my smoked brisket! Well done, Nigel! Completely agree, as I'm sure most of us do; but you picked him apart very professionally. Kudos! On another note, I'm sure it was an accident, but could somebody please be a bit more cautious about quoting the entire digest when replying? Thanks! I went two nights one after the other. The second night they played a song of Jimmy Hendrix (dont know the name of the song, but the words are "i dont know, they dont know...!?!?!?" a very charasteristic guitar-line which was played by mark on his bass. In a review i read that they played "i am so glad" (cream) during the "true colours tour", also in Amsterdam somewhere around 1985 ?? Once i saw mark singing in a clip of a some sort of english benefit group called "Pop against racism" or something. Does anyone of you guys (and girls !!) have the full information on this?. Best Wishes ET (phone home)
