From: frans @ lls.se (Frans Lundquist) Date: Sun, 9 Jun 1996 14:51:53 +0100 Yesterday, on a walk through Gothenburg, Sweden, where I live, I saw a man sitting on the street corner, playing slap bass. We walked past him, returned ten minutes later, and stood there just watching for another fiftenn minutes. He was playing exactly the same thing, all the time no break at all. I just know I have to find that guy again! Wow, that was great! /Farbror Frans - frans @ lls.se ------------------------------ Subject: LAW opinion From: Bassette Date: Sun, 9 Jun 1996 15:04:04 +0100 (WET DST) Hi on the best level my opinion of this CD is that It sound a bit flat ... but I like it not as more as Physical Presence but I like it Great to hear Man, Take a Look in Live ( But the public were sleeping I don't hear it a lot .. ) no more news about the Pilgrimage II ??? From: Samuel Crooks Date: Sun, 9 Jun 1996 14:41:59 +0100 (BST) hello, i have a request to make of the british readers of this l42 digest ( come on u can't all be yanks, surely). many moons ago i saw an ad in the daily telegraph featuring the sid lawrence orchestra with special guest mike lindup on piano. for those of u who don't know, the sid lawrence band is an extemely good jazz orchestra that plays cheesy, run of the mill big band swing to make it's living (much like l42 in regard to pop music-or perhaps i shouldn't have said that). anyway heaven only knows what mike was doing there! for a start he's not into big band jazz and i really don't think he'd betaken seriously in any proper jazz context judging by his playing. so if anyone knows, give me a bell. ta, sam. ------------------------------ Subject: Level rap? It sounds to me like you're defining "rap" as "anything I don't like". Fortunately that's not what "rap" means. Segments like the break in "Tracie" *are* rapped, like it or not -- a rap does not have to be done over a booming Miami Bass Waves rhythm track to be a rap. -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo @ swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V96 #161 From: Elson Trinidad Date: Sun, 9 Jun 1996 13:51:11 -0700 (PDT) On Sun, 9 Jun 1996, Level42 Digest wrote: > Subject: Level rap? The "US version" (which I still don't have) doesn't have Dream Crazy (a shame - Dream Crazy is one of my top 5 fave L42 songs!). I found three Level 42 12" singles. They are imports. All three of the singles combined contain these 9 songs: 1)GUARANTEED (the new avengers mix) 2)GUARANTEED (wheel spin warrior mix) 3)ALL SHE WANTS 4)TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF (extended version) 5)SILENCE (live) 6)MAN (live) 7)RUNNING IN THE FAMILY (extended version) 8)DREAM CRAZY 9)RUNNING IN THE FAMILY (7" version) Needless to say, I was very happy to find these records, all sealed and unopen. I quickly dubbed them off on high quality tape. Being in the states I find it hard to get rare Level 42 stuff. I was lucky to find these only copies that the store had. And, of course, I bought it as soon as I saw it. But I don't think it's as good as "A Physical Presence". I think Gary's (too) frequent use of the crash... (it's called 'bekken' in Dutch but I don't know the English word for it right now) has to do with it. It is really noticeable in the songs that were originally written by and with Phil on drums (check out Love Games for instance). Still, it is a pretty good live album, of course. There are very few bands that play live as well as Level 42. Gotta go now! From: The Bassman Date: Mon, 10 Jun 1996 09:50:27 +0100 (BST) Greetings Y'all! In yesterdays post, someone mentioned that the worldmachine cassette with 6 remixes was "rare(r)" (as compared with the US version). I (well, my sister actually) managed to pick up that cassette at a car boot sale in Belgium not so long ago. The equivalent price paid was about 40 pence, ie 0.40 pounds sterling. Damned good bargain I say. The mint value of this cassette was quoted at around 20 pounds in the UK magazine "Record Collector" a year or two back. This cassette is in pretty good condition, so might be worth a bit (not that I'm selling of course!!) Does anyone know the current price of this tape, or indeed of any other of the "rarer" items?
