This way we can get more answers to our questions, hopefully. In fact, I have a few questions/remarks: 1. Next week I'm going to London to do some Level-shopping (lucky me!). I hope to pick up the Thunderthumbs and the Toetsenman "Freedom" 12". For those of you who don't know Dutch, Toetsenman means keyboard player. I don't know why this is in Dutch, maybe Level 42 were in Holland when it was written. Can anyone recommend this song? Is it worth buying (at the going price of around 20 pounds)? 2. I read there are 3 subscribers in the Netherlands (one of them me). I would like the other two to E-mail me, to exchange tapes, records etc! 3. WARNING! My copy of "The early tapes" CD is turning gold!!! This may sound rather nice, but the fact is that I can't properly play it anymore. This must be one of the bad UK CD-pressings that were rumoured to be around. The music sounds very interrupted and "broken down into bits" I'll have to buy another copy! So, check your CD's: if any of them turns from silver into gold (on the text side) it is probably degrading!! Anyone else with the same problem? 4. Recently I got hold of Incognito's "Tribes, vibes, scribes". I think it's very good and, as mentioned before in the digest, does resemble earlier Level 42 music, with nice bass and saxophone lines. Maarten Gorter (maarteng @ dds.nl) .... .. ------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Subject: CD Video From: GVermette @ aol.com Date: Tue, 16 Jan 1996 12:26:39 -0500 Hi Folks! Someone wrote... >I have seen a CD5 in a Spectrum catalog under Polydor that lists a >Video/Audio CD for Something About You that includes the video, and 3 audio >only remixes of the song.. Has anyone heard of this or seen it before? The single you mention is a CD Video single which Pioneer tried to popularize in the mid to late 80's along with their muti-platform laserdisc machines. They were pressed on gold and included the video single plus a couple remixes. The "Something About You" single contains the following songs.... Audio: Something About You (Sisa Mix) - the best remix of the song I've ever heard Something About You (Coup d'Etat Version) - not a remix of S.A.Y., but "Coup d'Etat" Something About You (Shep Pettibone Remix) - with all that beautiful scratching (eccch) Video: Something About You I picked it up long ago, way before I ever had a laserdisc machine, purely for the remixes. I have no idea where one could find it now, CD Video 5"s are a long extinct animal. -Greg Vermette (Bad Lyric - "They do what they wanna do, say what they wanna say... live how they wanna live, play how they wanna play...dance how they wanna dance, kick n' they slap, the Addams Family!" - Addams Family Groove - Hammer) ------------------------------ Subject: Nothing in particular From: Dan Del Savio Date: Tue, 16 Jan 1996 12:13:36 -0500 Sorry for the non-level post, but I haven't been able to get in touch with Loz Loz-get in touch with me at the above address (Daniel.j.delsavio.1 @ nd.edu) dan ------------------------------ Subject: Just Remember: ONLY ONCE From: John Edward Martin Shuford Date: Tue, 16 Jan 1996 09:00:55 -0800 (PST) I wish I could say that second posting was a joke. The version quoted in the message was from the 12" single (sort of a rap bridge in the middle of the song). If you have the other tracks mentioned, then you're o.k. with the U.S version. I only have the U.K. version of the CD, and the U.S. version on vinyl, so I don't know if there's a sound quality difference on the two CD's. Anyone care to comment? Level 42 compilations have usually had truncated versions of album tracks. Level Best alone shortens Something About You, Running In The Family, Children Say, It's Over, Chinese Way, etc. A good reason to encourage all your friends who have Level Best to go out and get the other albums. Jakko J is given a musical credit on the British show "Chef". I think the theme song "Serious Profession" could be the subject of a great 10-minute jam for Mark/Mike/Wally and a couple of "Serious Musicians" (maybe the Goulds' "understated playing" would do). Some info has been posted recently about Tower Records in London. Do they have some sort of mail-order from the States? I'd like to buy CD's from England, but I'd have to sell my house first (good thing Dad moved the family to Canada from London town, or my CD collection would be one-tenth its size!). They just opened the first Tower Records, here in Toronto, and it's unbelievably expensive! As far as I know, there are two flavours of VH-1 in Europe - UK and German. The only time I have ever seen anything close to Level 42 was when they showed the best of the Prince's Trust concerts recently. Music is mostly 80's and 90's mainstream stuff, eg Simply Red, Phil Collins, Elton John, UB40, etc. The play list can be a bit limited from time to time - Soft Cell's Tainted Love keeps popping up again and again. At weekends they run a couple of concerts. They also show repeats of The Tube, The Old Grey Whistle Test, together with their own Ten of the Best / Request type shows. Overall, a well presented, easy to listen to station. Good moving wallpaper. From: "Heather Swanson" Date: Tue, 16 Jan 1996 18:24:50 EST Hi! I'm just writing in response to Fab's note about the "To Be With You Again" compilation. I've actually never heard of such a thing--what is it? An album? I have yet to come across it in my travels... Of course, being in Canada, that's hardly surprising! Also...Lazlo asked if the FAMILY EDITION was a Canadian thing. As far as I know, yes, it is. I have a friend in Colorado who asked me to send it to her because she couldn't get her hands on it anywhere in the States. I'm not sure how similar it is to the Platinum Edition, but it's definitely a worthwhile collector's item... Also, a question to all...Anyone have any ideas about whether or not Mark is planning on hitting Canada anytime soon? I missed my opportunity to see L42 in concert (which is one of my big regrets), so I'm hoping I can at least PARTIALLY make up for it. Until next time, then... Has anyone heard of this or seen it before? Yes -- this was even released in the US, believe it or not: CDV: 1987 UK (Polydor; 080 002-2) CDV: 1987 US (Polydor; 870 712-2) 7:38 Something About You (sisa mix) 3:56 Coup D'Etat (version) 8:03 Something About You (shep pettibone remix) 3:54 Something About You [video] Strange note: the video does *not* have the scream sound in that shot where the camera whizzes backwards from Mark... > And finally, Is it worth getting the UK version of the World Machine album? ABSOLUTELY. The "UK Version" is the real version -- the US version with "Hot Water", et al. is a cheap bastardization. GET THE UK VERSION! kidsdoc @ terraport.net writes: > I have the regular CD of RITF (Polydor 831 593-2) that was sold in > Canada and the version of "It's Over" is exactly the same as the > so-called extended version. By a weird coincidence, I just noticed this myself last night while working on timing and A/B'ing tracks for the discog. As far as I can tell, the "[extended] remix" of "It's Over" is *almost* identical to the album version, but it adds a harmonica part over the second verse (starting at about 1:10 or so). Some remix! I forget who wrote this: > Does anyone know FOR SURE what the difference is between the regular and > Japanese Pursuit? Takeo? Anyone? Takeo's track list makes it sound like the Japanese pressing is pretty much the same as everyone else's, right down to the dropout in the remix of "The Chinese Way". Greg Vermette already posted the tracklist for the Griffin version: Forever Now / Model Friend / Love in a Peaceful World / Romance / Billy's Gone / One in a Million / The Sunbed Song / Talking in Your Sleep / Don't Bother Me / Time Will Heal / Learn to Say No Frankly I don't see the point of releasing it with this tracklist! If Griffin had any smarts they'd just license the Resurgence version for US release. Not to knock the fact that we're getting some interesting variant versions out of the new Forever Now releases, but does it bother anyone else that L42 seem to have become fodder for all these cheap reissue labels? My wife has been trying to get me to line dance....you know... to country music. So she has been watching a lot of TNN (Nashville Network) lately. (Yes, please do have pity on me.) Well, I was listening to "Turn It On" today and it occured to me that this might make a good line dancing song. (This country music thing is really starting to affect me.) So I promptly turned to TNN and as fate would have it, they were not only line dancin, they were in perfect step (well, almost) with "Turn It On" as well. I called my wife in and said, "Now THis, I could handle." I can't even express how gratifying it was to see a whole room of "country folk" seemingly dancing to "Turn It On!" = ) And in conclusion. I managed to find a copy of The Early Tapes on CD in a local music store, and I'm impressed with the sound quality. I haven't tried it out on *the good stereo* yet, but so far, it sounds much better than my second generation tape (which was copied from a tape which had been munged in the tape deck in my car immediatly after purchasing it). From: Fabfriday @ aol.com Date: Tue, 16 Jan 1996 14:06:13 -0500 I realized upon closer inspection, that my vinyl copy of "Running In The Family Platinum Edition" was in fact part of a two record set not sold seperately and was also informed by a member of the digest... I found the remix portion at a used record shop, spent $1.00 for the UK import.. Speaking of the Running In The Family Platinum Edition, I to noticed that the remix of "It's Over" was the same as the album version. I have never heard\seen the instrumental version.. As far as shorter versions of the song, I can only think of the single-mix on Level Best (with a shortened time and added guitar and bass). Someone had voted for "People" as the best L42 song and said it was on the Staring At The Sun album, when in fact it was on the Standing In The Light album.... I'm sure you already know that, but for anyone who may be a newer fan, I thought I'd help clear that up... "People" is a great song.... Aside from loving all of their songs, I really love "Hot Water" (both versions), "Dream Crazy" and "Take A Look"..... But I still can't find a one and only favorite track.... Does anyone know if "Why Are You Leaving?" was ever released as a single? It sounds like it should've been. Also.... Why did L42 ever switch to RCA? I always thought the Polygram\Polydor label was good to them. (Can't say that for RCA\BMG)... Will Resurgence be re-issuing any old L42 albums in the future?
