As I mentioned, I have seen a mixed bag from them. For example, in the issue where they reviewed and trashed Guaranteed, they also ran a concert review that was very nice. In the issue where they reviewed the Guaranteed Live Vid, it was far more positive than expected, especially for a show where Mark was underwhelming in his enthusiasm and the pattern of camera shots was horribly predictable after only a couple of minutes. They trashed the remixes album, but hell, it deserves it (for the most part). They didn't review Forever Now (as far as I know), but they gave Mark a very nice and kind interview in conjunction with the release of that album. The interview was SO kind, in fact, that when I was distributing copies of Forever Now throughout the NW to some radio stations here, I used an excerpt from that interview as the press release (hey, at least Crockford got me a couple of CDs, though he didn't provide pr material). And my guess is that what has happened on this new review is that they've got a young kid who thinks that the sun rises and sets in Soundgarden's pants. Who knows? Perhaps it does... I'd just like to remind the 90's music fans of two things. Alternative and rap are this era's pop and new wave, and that for every Pearl Jam out there (which ain't many, folks), there are at least 25 Hooties (which, if you haven't noticed, is the safe and commercially sanitized version of Pearl Jam). Anyone of you Brits know if the Live at Wembley CD is out yet? Are they just teasing us with the review? ------------------------------ Subject: LOZ says hi! From: "Lars-Ove Karlsson" Organization: IAR Systems AB Date: Wed, 5 Jun 1996 12:47:40 +1 Hi! As some of you know, Loz is in the US right now visiting his friend Kurtis Kegley, also a friend of mine. Anyway, he mailed me a message to forward to the digest but the only thing that got through was "Hi all". Anyway apparently one of you wanted to phone him, but he forgot your number, so get in touch with me to get it. Nice also to see another swedish member to the digest, welcome. I think it would be interesting to see lists of L42 stuff that members of this list has, partly to see if there's stuff I don't have and can get a copy off, and since I already now several people who have more stuff than myself :-(, I can't brag about my collection, since someone else would have more. Anyway, I think people that are prepared to make copies of stuff could make lists of what they have. I think all of our musical tastes have changed since we were younger. Hell, I rememeber liking the Osmonds and The Jackson 5. My father continuosly played JAZZ in the house and took me to JAZZ clubs with him. Needless to say, I hated it! Now I love JAZZ, and besides Level 42, it's basically all I listen to. I respect the guys for deciding that maybe it's time to write some songs that will be remembered, and not just by the fan club! Unless you own your own record company, you eventually are going to have to produce some hits, change with the market, or get out. At the time of the bands creation, Jazz-Funk was very popular. It seems to be making a come back with the title ACID-JAZZ. During the period of World Machine, RITF, etc. the music scene had changed, with videos becoming more prevalent and necessary. I look at the bands re-direction as an inevitable change. Eventually you want to change your style, or incorporate other styles. I think they changed to leave behind some songs worth remembering, and not just to make a ton of money. Look at the bright side, at least they didn't try do to a RAP tune. I bought three before it sank in that I > I already owned it -- what's *your* story, Vince? :-) My story is that I bought my first copy for $25, so I'm trying to make up for it by finding as many copies for $1 as I can. :-) Well, that was (mostly :-) a joke -- the real deal is that my philosophy is to buy *any* L42 vinyl I stumble upon, regardless of whether I already have it or not, because I figure if I don't rescue it it could end up abused or thrown out for junk. If I can take care of it until the day it finds a loving home, then I've done my job. ObRemixRant: Thanks to Pat Flanagan, I've heard the Porky Rides Again remix of Forever Now, and am totally nuts about it. Anyone overseas know where I can purchase a copy, and/or care to arrange a trade for anything I can get you here in the US? Shepard) Date: Wed, 5 Jun 96 08:46:04 PDT I've been reading all the messages about Phil vs. Gary, both Forever Now projects, and L42 in the 80's vs. 90's and I just wanted to give my opinion (though its not worth anything) ... SATS was the first I'd heard of L42 and, being a bass player, I was in awe at a new mentor, Mark King. Then I'd heard RITF about the same time Guaranteed came out, which by this time I was hooked. But I was more impressed with Gary's drumming since I'd not yet come to appreciate Phil's musicianship. While I do like the later projects better, I do appreciate the earlier projects too. But if I'd heard the earlier stuff first, I'd probably never have given L42 a second chance being that, back then, I really didn't care for dance/funk music that much. So, I have to say that I like the post-Gould era L42 projects better. Saying the above, I think that both Phil & Gary are two totally different players with two totally different styles and they must be discussed as this. One is not better than the other, just different. I happen to prefer Gary to Phil slightly more. Same with guitars...I prefer the styles of Alan Murphy to Boon. As for the FN & FN+4 projects, I really like FN, but its taken a few listens to get there. I tend to listen to the first FN project more on my CD player. I don't like the re-mixes to FN+4. Anyway, that's all I wanted to say.....flame away. -- Brian D Shepard bshepard @ bmsc.com 6/5/96 8:46:04 AM PT ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V96 #158 From: Charlie Organization: Brave New World Date: Wed, 05 Jun 1996 18:28:14 -0700 Hiddyhoe All! I must say that after reading several "digest" I've found out much that I didn't know about Level42. I've read several threads where people are talking about "Live" video tapes and such. What I'd like to do, is ask if anyone would be willing to copy their tapes for me. I'd be willing to pay for all mail and shipping charges for the tapes. I'd most be interested in Live stuff. Also, does anyone in this mailing list do any keyboard programming? If so, does anyone have can Level42 sounds for the Roland D-70? Thanks!
