Some of the +4 tracks are yawners, but overall, both discs have enough funk to keep you going. Maybe I'm just being soft on M&M. I got the first two EP discs from FN here in the States in spring 1994 (the album was never available) and listened to the various remixes of "All Over You" and "Learn To Say No." That's where I first heard the song "Forever Now," and I thought it was great lyrically and musically. On 4+, "Heart on the Line" is a very well-written song, as is "Play Me." So there are some nuggets on both discs, and some clunkers as well. In other words, I get lots of use out of my "skip" and "program" keys on my CD players. "Now the Time has come to show you how I feel....." ------------------------------ Subject: Q Review From: John Edward Martin Shuford Date: Tue, 4 Jun 1996 08:32:45 -0700 (PDT) You know, I've seen Q reviews that are quite kind and positive on L42, others that absolutely butcher them. It would be nice if they developed some consistency. I suspect that this guy is a young git and has no appreciation for the 80's. Or perhaps he's just a git. Come on, does anyone REALLY think that music ever tremendously improves from one era to the next? You've always got your schlock acts, your middle of the road, and your people who can really do something lasting. I don't know if this tapehead has taken a look at the crap on MTV recently. Not everything is crap, certainly, but talk about recycled attitude and excessiveness! At least some focus seems to be returning to being able to play your instrument and to writing a complicated piece of music. Unfortunately, I don't think that efforts to improve vocals have come around yet. I'm going to say something unpopular right now. I think there's something right about what this git has to say in his review. I mean, should L42 have gone for the hit records, or should they have stuck more with what Phil wanted from them? It's a good question, alas one with no real answer. But L42 very consciously "sold out," and that never looks good in anyone's eyes. Aside from that, this guy's a zero, and I'm surprised that he didn't give the album a similar score. Buy the album in droves, children! ------------------------------ Subject: Hot Water? At least one of them has the actual picture sleve though! I also did the same thing with Weave Your Spell 12" and SAY 12" (including The Remixes and Platinum edition I have the Shep Mix of SAY at least four times now!). > I don't know why they did it, but it seems to me as if it's lost it's > 'Funkyness'. Again, glad I'm not alone here. Everyone else seems to have mentioned a preference for the Resurgence mix of Billy's Gone, but I agree... The RCA version has a much "heavier" feel to it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Daniel James - Database Administrator djames @ statsci.com Data Analysis Prod Div of MathSoft (formerly StatSci) (206) 283-8802 x284 ------------------------------ Subject: Need that bass! From: frans @ lls.se (Frans Lundquist) Date: Tue, 4 Jun 1996 20:05:34 +0100 Hi all! Taking this opportunity to introduce myself to all of you. Have been reading here for a few weeks, and it sure feels good to know that I'm not lonely in the world, digging the old Level 42! You have made me start playing my old vinyls over and over, realising that the are so filled with noise and crackles that I even had to buy a CD-copy of Worldmachine (in my view their best). Also I found that there are several records that seems to be missing in my collection, and haven't succeded in correcting this at my local record shop... In my view the band had it's best time around 85, and I had the chance to see them twice (Gothenburg, Sweden on both occasions) and the first appearance was certainly the best (memories are a bit blurry from that time, but I think it was 84 and 86 or something like that). Just thought I would let you know that I'm here, to do something about the US dominance of this mailing list! :-) /Farbror Frans - frans @ lls.se ------------------------------ Subject: Pilgrimage From: R.J.Simpson @ mcs.salford.ac.uk Date: 4 Jun 96 21:37 >Here is a list of the people who have shown interest in the Pilgrimage. I shall be going be it one or one hundred people, but what happened to all those people who said they would have preferred to come over in the summer instead of when the first pilgrimage was? (apologies to those people who are in the above list). The more the merrier. Lets really make this one a STONKER (*). If your not sure you want to go then let me assure you, the first pilgrimage was great, and this one could be even better. Just think, this is YOUR chance to drink/eat in Mark King's cafe, search through second hand record shops for those elusive bits of vynl, have you photograph taken outside Mark King's house, play Level 42 (with others who will actually appeciate it for once!) till the early hours of the morning. And didn't someone mention hiring a room above a pub somewhere and getting a band together, amongst other stuff. The list goes on. So sign up now, before it's too late. Please note. This post is not supposed to be having a go at anyone - it's just trying to stir up a bit of enthusiasm. Hope to see you there, Richard. They shot Guaranteed down in flames as well. (covers too...) From: Bill Wilson Date: Tue, 4 Jun 1996 16:43:47 -0700 Hello! some cool stuff... I got Guaranteed live from Joe (thanks Joe!), and have noticed a few things: 1. Mike is a cheeze 2. Jakko has a decent voice 3. Mark Plays 3 basses and they have very different sounds. The dark redwood one has a very tinny sound, used for her big day, childrens say, etc... he has a nice knotted pine/oak one that has a beautiful full bass sound... he also plays a 5 string during if you were mine, kinda tinny sounding 4. Mark is an awesome Bassist My 2.5 year old son loves certain level 42 songs. here is his favorties list: Living it Up If you were Mine the spirit is free to be with you again leaving me now these are the videos that he likes to watch and has pointed out to me on several occasions that mark plays the bass 2 different ways, very cool... Last week he told me that he wanted to watch "get down mama", and I had no idea what he was talking about, but then I remembered that in the middle of living it up, Mark says those exact words... what these kids pick out, kinda cool... in the car he will only listen to Love in a Peaceful World or Love Meeting Love... not much of a song selection, but L42 none the less... on the Seattle Sonics front, I wore my Level 42 list shirt (thanks Zak!) and they were able to pull it out against the Jazz! level 42 is luck... On the covers front, we are nearing the middle of June. I hope to get all the songs together and the covers from Zak here pretty soon so we can mail this sucker out! as always mail me to let me know if you want a copy... thanks and TCOY, bill
