From: TTrudell @ aol.com Date: Sat, 1 Jun 1996 12:22:53 -0400 Tomorrow I'm riding my bicycle in the California AIDSride, 525 miles, SF to LA, 7 days of hills and thrills. Anyone else doing this, by any chance? I'll be taking along a lot of L42 tapes, and in my spare moments of excruciating agony I will doubtless reflect upon the meaning of life, the rock in my shoe, and other trivialities, which must include the burning questions of the L42 digest that will be discussed in my absence. John Venzon, the check is on the way for the CD. Finally. Sorry for the delay. . . Donald Fagen, the Nightfly, just got it, only took me twelve years, it rocks. Well, it grooves. Later Levellians. -Tom ------------------------------ Subject: My List From: Jdelsav @ aol.com Date: Sat, 1 Jun 1996 13:26:00 -0400 Hello all My pretty extensive list of L42 material is ready. Whoever wants to take a look at it and request anything, just give me an e-mail and I'll send it to you as an attachment. Oh yeah, does anybody have that copy of Forever Now (live) that was mentioned a while ago? I'm looking to get a copy. Personally, I disagree. I feel that the song helped 'steer' the group in their direction. If that was their best, than you must concede that they pinnacled at the first part of their careers, respectively. What have they done since that is worthy of merit? We all have musical likes and dislikes. Many of us have studied music. But, songs like Hot Water, Kansas City Milkman, To Be With You Again, even Leaving Me Now are just a few which I think surpass TCW and should be noted. The sign of a good band is one that sticks to their roots and builds from it. L42 has done exactly that. The Sunbed Song has the same groove and feel as The Chinese Way has--they have just built upon it and mastered it. Aside from most of the Guarenteed album, and a few songs, here and there, they have built up and bettered themselves from the start. I mentioned how I liked Forever Now quite a bit, but I was thinking of asking all you level 42 experts out there if you saw the same things about it that I realized. At my first listen, it didn't seem like any typical L42 stuff. It seemed more "Dance" style, and the rhythms seemed more generic. I always saw L42 as questing for a new sound, or a new way of approaching music/lyrics, while keeping things simple sounding - but always being musically complex. Its amazing how many times I've broken down their music, which sounded so simple overtop everything to find that they have combined 3+ of the melodies at the end of their song. (which seems to be a trademark of their late work). But to get to the point, it still, from what I can tell, is up to par as far as originality in some respects, or creativity, but the overall SOUND of what they are doing are EXTREMELY like DISCO, or Dance music, which really kind of turns me off. Musically.. I still like anything they put out though.. It was nice to have Phil back for the CD, but I thought that it was pretty plain drumming (being a percussionist myself for 12+ years its easy to point out things that can be improved) and they really didnt add their percussive resources that Mark and Mike can offer to the CD. As well, Mark's bass playing was very much laid back. Sunbed song was great though! Of course I expected that, seeing the progression of his playing over the years, as he's put more priority on the SONG instead of his playing. Personally, I enjoy the older stuff, where he goes wild with originality and pure funk! In Guarenteed, I loved alot of the songs, like Lassoo the moon was very well done. I LOVE it when he is playing during a song, not only supporting the music, but being part of a underlying melody itself! Mike's stuff was typical, and I really enjoyed Past Lives. I think he laid back a little too.. It seems like they threw alot of this stuff together to keep people happy more or less.. or maybe they are getting old? :) Although his singing in this is great as usual, I think that in a few of the songs, his high range, in tandem with the "groove" at that moment in the song reminds me SO much of disco, that I'm afraid to like it! Especially with the songs with the Strings. The songs with the strings could have been so nice, if the disco stuff wasn't added. The guitar playing seemed non existant. I mean Boon's guitar playing was very limited before as well, but they added him in at the right times and places to make the puzzle fit. In this CD it seems like its just background filler.. Those are my critisisms of the CD... basically. Whatever the case, or whatever their individual CD's will be like, I will love them no matter what! PS - who is playing bass in Mikes new CD? ________________________________________________________________________ | | | Check \ _ / Six! *Stupid Poetic Justice! - Homer Simpson* | | \_(0)_/ **Steve "Crow" Kenney** | | +---=====(]( + )[)=====---+ **Crow @ MnSi.Net** | | * o @ o * **Victims... aren't we all?** | |______________________________________________________________________|
