That song is about the most haunting track on True Colours (after "Hours by the Window"), and doesn't have that feel-good, poppy feel to it that their commercial songs do. As for the Chinese Way, do the lyrics really matter? They could've been singing about watching paint dry for all I care - just listen to that unforgettable bass-line, that's what makes the song. Just MHO, Paul :) ------------------------------ Subject: Mark's rap in Tracie From: "Steen, Rob" Date: Fri, 31 May 96 12:03:54 gmt Hi There, I've always taken the rap here to be : I see your face in every magazine smile, I see you walking in the shadows of the graveyard, Your presence haunts me everywhere I go, As I drive by places that I used to know. If I could find a way I'd go back in time, I'd do the right thing, baby, pick you up and make you mine, Never leave you, always please you, make you glad, That Joe's the guy you always said was bad. Some of it doesn't seem to make much sense but that's what it sounds like to me, bear in mind this is from memory and that hasn't been too reliable for some time now! Also, to fuel the flames, I like the Chinese Way I've always thought of it as one of my farourite tracks, but then that's me and we all have different taste, I think some peoples favourite tunes are the worst songs the band has come out with! Have fun, Rob Steen. ------------------------------ Subject: Mark/Mike Solo LP From: WINMAN @ gnn.com (WINSTON WALKER) Date: Fri, 31 May 1996 07:54:27 In addition to the info supplied by Walter Franken regarding a possible delay of Mark's solo Lp, I have heard from a source in the UK that BOTH Mark King and Mike Lindup will have new solo material available in September. You can't imagine my joy in finding a "meeting place" for so many to discuss such great music from one of (if not the) best band ever to lay a track. I've been reading the digest for a few weeks now, and it has become one of the high points in my day. I've been a fan of l42 since about 1986, ever since I heard "A Good Man in a Storm." Other than that song, my favorites include "Why Are You Leaving","Lying Still" and "Talking in Your Sleep." I currently have 8 CD's and would love to expand my collection, especially into some of the UK versions. By the way, thanks again to DJRJ for the CD's! I live in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area (where the license plates should read "Pittsburgh -- It's not what you think") so if anyone happens to pass through I'd love to get together and talk about the band. I'll end this babble after one final comment that may get me in trouble -- I happen to like "Kouyate" more than "The Chinese Way." W.K. I've been a fan of the boys since I first heard "Starchild" way back in my first year of college, and I've been hooked ever since. Here in Minnesota, the boys don't get any airplay, so I have to get my music and news from elsewhere. I was bummed about the breakup, but it seemed inevitable after Guaranteed came out. I finally laid my hands on the real version of Forever Now during a recent trip to Dublin. I have the other version, too, and it's nice to have a bundle of "new" songs to listen to. My faves are: songs -- Children Say, Love Games, She Can't Help Herself, Forever Now album -- World Machine (original version), Guaranteed Thanks for the 15 seconds...keep the funk! ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V96 #153 From: crow @ MNSi.Net (Steve "Crow" Kenney) Date: Fri, 31 May 1996 09:44:17 -0400 HI all, Being from Canada, I am only available to certain titles in stores. In fact, I am lucky right now, to find 1 or 2 CD's in a local store. Level Best, and World Machine. I did collect their tapes years back in the 80's and bought all the major ones. But watching this digest, I've seen that there are so manny singles and songs I've never seen before. What I would like to ask of all you Level 42 fans, is if someone can reply to the digest, or send me personal Email, and LIST EVERYTHING that is available to get, from Level 42. I want to see what I've had, and what I don't have, and what I can still get. This includes Videos, tapes, singles, CD's etc.. Does anyone have a decent compilation they can post? Then I start my search for these CD's and singles. Every new song is a treasure to me, and I feel like digging up some gold! PS- thanks in advance to anyone who posts such a list! Me fail english??? Don't worry, not EVERYONE likes Chinese Way, right Lolita? ;D >these tracks show that l42 could have gone onto greater >things if it had shunned commercialism Yeah, but then they would've been dumped by the record companies even quicker, and there'd be less of their stuff for us to hear. Personally, I think they struck a pretty good balance, but then again, I like almost all of their "hits", too (and I'm rather fond of Three Words, myself -- it should've been on the album). Anyway, the long sleeping "Chinese Way can of worms" has been reopened. Well, that is definitely not true (right, Pat?). I've been on the Digest for a year and a half, and this very subject has come up no less than three times. People seem to have strong feelings about the song - either they really like it, or they _really_ hate it. I'm not here to start this up again, but I wanted to throw Sam some support, because I dislike the song too. Immensely. I don't agree with your statement about Mike's album; I happen to like it a lot, but of course that's my opinion. Lying Still is one of their prettiest songs, so I'm with you on that one. Skip - PLEASE don't type in all caps if you can help it. It comes across as though you are yelling. Schoenes Wochenende (all you Germans will get that). I'm glad the transcript was well recieved! Sorry for breaking your software, Eric, I did kind of think that might be the reason for the multiple digests yesterday! [not a problem! You didn't actually "break" it... it was configured to behave that way... -Eric] Thanks also to Ken Meacham for his comments. I debated whether to put those sort of explanations "in curly brackets" but decided it would detract from the transcription. On reflection, I'll add them to the notes at the end. Don't worry, I'm not going to re-submit it to the digest! I listened over and over to the bit "couldn't get a rest in" or "could get arrested" and couldn't make my mind up between the two. The fingers are recovering nicely, thank you. Well, I'll put in my two cents and say that I *do* kind of like the song. It actually holds a special place in my collection because it was the only new track that I could get my hands on after Worldmachine came out - I picked it up as an import vinyl single at a Newbury Comics store here in Boston. If I had heard it along with the whole ..Pursuits.. LP, then maybe my opinion would be different, but at the time, I was crazy about anything that I could get my hands on! Also, Lying Still is one of my all-time faves too, as is the whole Worldmachine album. Kouyate is ok... I happen to like the True Colors LP alot, except I am *not* a big fan of Hot Water or The Chant Has Begun... why they substituted these tracks in on the US version of Worldmachine, I don't know... (yes, I know they were UK "hits", but I like the UK release tracks better!) Well, I'm off to Washington, D.C. for the wekend -- major inline skating event! Reelin' in the years... But boy, did we have a great time at John Venzon's pad!! We made tapes. We exchanged tapes. We listened and listened to Level 42! And it wall worked out for at least three reasons: 1) John's got the best home audio/video set-up in the world. 2) We were able to get our copies of the very, very, very cool "As Years Go By" B-sides disc that John and many others worked hard to assemble. Great job and many thanks to all!!! 3) We saw Mark King racing all forms of little trucks, big trucks, and other assorted motor vehicles. True! Angel (LittleHalo, as she's otherwise known) brought along the infamous "Bob C" tapes (?) - Six videocassettes crammed full of all kinds of miscellaneous video material. Much of it was not exactly laser-disc quality. But it was tremendous fun! We saw some of the music videos that were made after "Level Best." We saw some great concert footage - You haven't lived until you've watched the Prince's Trust concert, where Mark shouts out "Eric Clapton" to take a guitar solo in the middle of a Level 42 Song!! (Lessons in Love, I think... don't hold me to it.) Yah! And there was the aforementioned truck racing derby. This defies description. Let us just say that Mark and his teammate put on a tremendous show - and we hope he's just helping him with the gear shift. Elson Trinidad wrote of the event: >As for the pictures, We can have those done anytime. The important thing >is, we got to see Mark King drive some fine automobiles/farm equipment, >receiving head (Hey, "Overtime" video, remember??!), jamming with >Stewart Copeland, Nik Kershaw and Mr. Bean himself, and the >most badly filmed bootlegs ever made all on the same night. The lineup won't look anything like L42, but >hey, where else can you hear the music of L42 live anywhere? As you can see, the event left quite an impression! And what was Mark King doing jamming with Mr. Bean? We promise to shoot some photos next time! (Don't want to let our "rivalry" with the Least Coast die down!) :D So thanks John, Wendy, Angel, Evan, and Elson! This event was a total and complete blast! It was a total dream come true, for a fan who has always dreamed/hoped that there were others out there who shared this passion. Til next time!
