Hansen" Date: Thu, 30 May 1996 14:20:44 -0400 (EDT) Peoples, sorry for the triple digests yesterday! You were thinking that you fell asleep and woke up three days later, right?!?! Actually, Steve Robson's long post (the Mark King interview) caused the mailing list software to dish out several digests because it was configured *not* to allow a digest greater than 32 kilobytes in length. Not a problem, though... I've increased this limit, so it shouldn't happen again. I've also gone into the archives and merged digests 151, 152 and 153 (which should have all been part of the same digest). If you go into the archives (via email or WWW), you'll see this. As such, the digest that you're reading now is issue #152. Thanks yall... -Eric Level 42 Digest Owner -- Eric J. "I see your face in every magazine smile, I see you walkin ?????????????????????????, Your presence haunts me everywhere I go, It's supplied by the places that we used to know. If I could find a way I'd go back in time, I'd do the right thing, baby, pick you up and make you mine, (next 2 lines ?????????)" Can anyone fill in the blanks (or indeed correct the non-blanks!). From: K.E.Meacham @ pac.soton.ac.uk Date: Thu, 30 May 1996 14:25:03 +0100 Hi Folks, Many thanks to Steve Robson for his transcription of Mark's 1987 interview; it must have taken many hours - how are your callouses? Just thought I'd make some comments, to help clarify things for some of our readers. I still remember the interview pretty well (I listened to it on teh radio at the time and recorded it). MK: Right. Because a lot of people do say to me that I don't play the bass as much as I used to on the records, and I don't, and the reason is that when I used to play bass a lot on records, I couldn't get a rest in, you know, the records wouldn't be that successful and you have to do what's best for the song and give it it's best chance of being a hit. And that really means to sort of keep my thumb in my pocket and play sensibly and do only what the track demands. I thought what he said here was "when I used to play bass a lot on records, I could get arrested". This is just from memory - I haven't listened to the interview for quite a while. I'll check this... MK: Let me just say, actually, it doesn't necessarily have to have four strings, there are five string basses, 'de rigeur', at the moment, and you can have, the string goes down to, if this is, [slaps a few 'E's] that's my 'E' string and that's the lowest, very often now you get it taken down to 'B', which is, er, [de-tunes 'E' string to 'B', using harmonics] which is right down there. so this is where the lowest bass string would be now and, er, I'm playing, of course, let me think, [plays a groove using the low 'B'], I'm rapidly trying to, ah, there we go anyway, so that's what happens when you take it right down, it's very low, um, what was the question again? [they both chuckle] I thought this bit was particularly funny. He's not so good at giving interviews whilst playing the bass... AP: [In John Noakes voice] Well of course all those of you at home are able to that already, so we'll now move to lesson two! [drops voice] That's ludicrous! MK: Here's one I made earlier! AP: Absolutely ludicrous. [laughs] Yes and "down Shep!" as well, we'll get 'em all in while we're going. Fantastic instrument, you were saying that's made out of graphite earlier on.. John Noakes used to present this BBC kids programme called 'Blue Peter'. They used to have fun making things in their kitchen and getting in a real mess. Then they always took a meal out of the oven that they'd "prepared easlier". John Noakes had a dog called "Shep". John's catchphrase used to be "get down shep" - didn't someone make a song about this? AP: Herbie Hancock and "I thought it Was You" and I'm sat with Ken Dodd whose hair is stood on end at the moment! It does have that effect on you doesn't it? MK: How tickled I am, yes! Ken Dodd was a popular comedian in the seventies, who had hair everywhere. He carried a "tickling stick" with him. MK: Oh, not half, yeah. This is, er, oh "Not half" I sound like Fluff, don't I? and, er, yes, "Five Hundred Miles High" is the track that we're going to be hearing from "Return to Forever" and this, Chick Korea once again is a keyboard player, it's funny that it should be three keyboard players that I thought we should listen to here but Chick Korea is a fantastic, um, Rhodes player, Fender Rhodes that's a kind of electric piano and he began a band called "Return to Forever" with Stanley Clarke who was one of my favorite bass guitarists back in the '70s.. "Fluff" refers to Alan "Fluff" Freeman, the BBC radio DJ, who used to say "not half" all the time (pronounced "noddarf"). Hope this clears up some confusing references... I've been keeping up with all the digests, so it's excellent to see so much going on. Lots of good talk and I love all these projects like the B-sides, T-shirts and cover album, though I do wonder how this beats an copyright infringement rules. Still it's real cool and I'm hoping to be part of the cover album. A lot of you inquired to me personally about my video collection. It's still here. But, at this particular moment, I don't have a dual VCR set up...though that will change very soon. So, if you didn't get all of them last time around or if you're new, they should be available again very soon. I'll keep you posted. As for any Level 42 news I've heard, it hasn't been much. I talked to Danny Blume last week and he said he was going back to record with Phil and Steve White very soon and he seemed extremely upbeat about this project. Oh well, it's nice to say hello again. From: Samuel Crooks Date: Thu, 30 May 1996 23:41:34 +0100 (BST) why is it that every one likes "the chinese way" ???? i know this might offend many readers but it's simple, cheesy and has some awful lyrics. as with most bands, l42's hits are not necessarily their best songs. look at the thought and artistry that went into "akinder eye" or "lying still"- these tracks show that l42 could have gone onto greater things if it had shunned commercialism- i.e. if it had avoided songs like "kouyate" or "3 words". i feel this might be mike's fault as he has a propensity for really trite stuff i.e. his "changes" album, although there are some astoundingly good tracks as well! but then again there has always been a fine line between cheesy songs and those that bear the writer's true feelings in an upfront kind of way. sam crooks 30/5/96 ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V96 #151 From: ROwens7769 @ aol.com Date: Thu, 30 May 1996 23:35:46 -0400 I HAVE A KWIK QUESTION I MUST HAVE MISSED SOMETHING BUT WHAT IS CDR. Mr King has appeared on Dutch radio last tuesday (21/5/96) and did some little interview. I didn't hear it myself, but a colegue fan did, and told me the core of it. In short, mark told that he was not feeling happy at the moment, and as a result he wouldn't work on his new album for a time. So, I must conclude that we might have to wait some more months before we can listen to King's new musical extravagances. Hope I didn't upset you too much, ;-) Greetings, Walter Franken
