Can someone tell me what's changed?? Just some items added: Mark's sister Jackie, Mark's nicknames, and I also reworded the second paragraph to go into more detail about his musical training. (It was all info I pulled out of The Definitive Biography.) > Also, I understand there a hard copy bio on the band floating around outhere > somewhere. Can someone tell me how to get my hands on one? If you're referring to Elson's old FAQ, it's up on the homepage. Not only that but the biographies are an amalgam of info from all the sources I've ever seen on the Net for L42-info (again, mostly Elson's FAQ). I've never seen another bio sheet on the band floating around, but if someone knows differently please let me know. The Bends is one of my favourites.. very well written.. But I forgot to mention how much I really liked Past Lives too!! I LOVE that song. I noticed that in this CD, they are using a much more chromatic, and diminished chord progressions.. gives a yearning type of feel to it.. The one part in Past Lives, where Mike uses a rolling keyboard in the background is the type of stuff I REALLY love. reminds me of a symphony. If anyone could pull off a real rock symphony worth mentioning, I think Level 42 could have done it.. Me fail english??? Thats unpossible!! Crow @ mnsi.net Victims... As this is my first message to the digest I'd better introduce myself. My name is Julian Haswell, I live near Brighton in the UK and first got into the band in 1983. The very first track I heard was The Chinese Way which remains my favourite and saw the band live the next year on the True Colours tour. I've followed them ever since and must have nearly everything they recorded! I have a superb Mike Lindup CD entitled Changes, released in 1990 which every Lft should hear. If anyone's interested for more details please mail me. Best wishes Julian ------------------------------ Subject: sam's introduction. From: Samuel Crooks Date: Tue, 28 May 1996 17:36:11 -0400 hello, i hope some level42 people read this! i've been addicted to the band for 4 years now(i'm 20 now) although i wasn't an 80's kid exactly. anyway, i'm from morecambe , north lancs originally but now i live in oxford where i'm trying to do a pointless degree in japanese studies at the oh-so-old-fashioned uni there. apart from l42, i'm a huge jazz fan ( espec pat metheny/andy shepphard at the moment) but i don't like much pop apart from i guess sting, bruce hornsby, prefab sprout etc..... i must confess that i play jazz trombone and also piano but perhaps one of the reasons i like the group is that i always wanted to play slap bass. but sadly it was not to be.... so why do i like the band? well at the end of the day i guess you've just got to say they created a unique atmosphere coz they were basically happy guys who enjoyed and were very good at what they did- and they weren't afraid to be cheesy, which is an excellent trait anyhow, please someone write to me, i've got exams soon and need to be reassured i've got musical taste! cheers sam ------------------------------ Subject: Wally returns, and I can't wait! From: DJRJ89073 @ aol.com Date: Wed, 29 May 1996 00:37:34 -0400 My fellow Level-Heads, my boy Wally has been busy in the studio and I thought you should know. This should be a hot album--believe the HYPE! Positively, DJ-RJ. GLOBAL MUSIC PULSE The latest music news from around the planet. Edited by DAVID SINCLAIR Billboard May 18, 1996 Volume 108 No. 20 p.45 © Copyright 1996 by BPI Communications Inc. BRAZIL: Percussionist, songwriter, and singer CARLINHOS BROWN is virtually a national institution. Constantly featured in style and music magazines, the 30-year-old musician from Candeal in Salvador, the capital of the state of Bahia, has written a staggering 26 No. 1 hits for various artists and has collaborated with performers ranging from international jazz greats, such as LEE RITENOUR, BILL LASWELL, and WAYNE SHORTER, to Brazilian thrash-metal warriors SEPULTURA. Steeped in the musical and cultural traditions of the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomble, he is one of the most creative artists of his generation. He has initiated several collective projects, most notably TIMBALADA, a 120-piece percussion group. Now, somewhat belatedly, Brown releases his first solo album, ALFAGAMABETIZADO (EMI Brazil), on Friday (May 17). Produced by WALLY BADAROU, the composer/arranger from Benin, it is an exotic cocktail of sounds, singing, rap, and rhythm, powered as ever by a percussive tour de force. Huge brass fanfares explode like fireworks lighting up the carnival sky during Seo Ze; a muted trumpet links arms with twinkling vibes and a haunting female voice to create a mysterious funk-noir effect on Complicidade De Armorio; and high life meets heavy rock guitar on Pandeiro-Deiro, a swift-moving Portugese-language rap with an amazing arsenal of drums, shakers, and cow bells chattering away beneath. Brazil is a country that has been able to absorb funk music, soul music, Central African music, Arabic music, and Latin music, Brown explains. It synthesizes Africa and Hollywood. And I have the pleasure to blend all these musics into one. Featuring contributions from a host of celebrity performers, including CAETANO VELOSO, GAL COSTA, and GILBERTO GIL, ALFAGAMABETIZADO could be the album to establish Brown as a major name on the international stage. It is slated for release in France on the Delabel label to coincide with a May 28 showcase performance at La Cigale in Paris before being released in the U.K. on Virgin June 17. ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V96 #149 From: Axl Date: Wed, 29 May 1996 00:46:35 -0400 I just ordered forever now!/ I cant wait to get it.! yayayayay ------------------------------ Subject: Live at When?
