And the Thunderthumbs and the Toetsenman single "Freedom" was issued on 7" and 12" in July of 1982 on Polydor (POSP/POSPX 480). -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo @ swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) ------------------------------ Subject: Meeting Mark!!!! From: JNSMITH @ msuvx2.memphis.edu Date: Mon, 15 Jan 1996 11:10:12 -0600 (CST) Hey Guys, Tell me what you think of this idea: If we find out from LOZ that Mark is going to do a tour, how many of you would go to England to see him? I also subscribe to the Dream Theater digest and recently, when Dream Theater did a concert in New York or Connecticut, a lot of the digest subscribers met at a diner and got to visit with each other. Dream Theater was also supposed to show up but they had to cancel. Maybe, if Mark is going to tour and we get enough people to cross the pond LOZ could ask Paul to get Mark to meet with us and hang out or grab something to eat. Maybe the thought of a free meal would help Mark with this decision. Surely we all would refuse to let him pay for anything(HAHAHA!). Anyway, tell me what you think of this idea! ------------------------------ Subject: Re: RITF Platinum From: kidsdoc @ terraport.net (Prashant Joshi) Date: Mon, 15 Jan 1996 12:02:09 -0500 Until now I thought RITF was pretty straightforward; now I'm not so sure. On the Platinum Edition (or, for us Canadians, the Family Edition) LP, there is an "extended" version of "It's Over." I have the regular CD of RITF (Polydor 831 593-2) that was sold in Canada and the version of "It's Over" is exactly the same as the so-called extended version. I also have 12" single vinyl version of RITF purporting to be an extended version but which, again, is identical to the version on my stock RITF CD. What gives? Is there an album out there full of songs entitled "amputated" or "truncated" version? :) ************************* * Prashant Joshi * ************************* {kidsdoc @ terraport.net} ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V96 #14 From: GVermette @ aol.com Date: Mon, 15 Jan 1996 11:38:59 -0500 Hi Folks! Hold on Buckaroos! These pages are for the sake of information exchage between fellow minded fans, not a race to see who can get the triva answers out quicker. Keep in mind that we're not playing Jeopardy here, there's bonus round, no prizes fo the winning couple. My response to the "bass solo" question was submitted on the same day as everyone elses, but from time to time, mailings get delayed from one digest to the next. As far as I'm concerned, the information is still valid, and J.S. Lohr got the correct answer to his question, regardless of who answered it first. There is no one "expert" amongst us with the inside track to special information, we all have something to contribute. Speaking of contributions, for best 42 song, my vote goes to "People" from Staring at the Sun. The track has all the elements that make 42 my favorite bang, simple but meaningful lyrics, a bright combunation of electronic and acoustic instrumentation, a great bass solo, and a touching message. For all out energy, I'd have to place "43" at the very top of the list. I can listen to that song over and over and still be blown away by it's intensity and musicianship. I have seen a CD5 in a Spectrum catalog under Polydor that lists a Video/Audio CD for Something About You that includes the video, and 3 audio only remixes of the song.. Has anyone heard of this or seen it before? I know that there were some simillar CD5's released in the UK for the Running In The Family album.... And finally, Is it worth getting the UK version of the World Machine album? Quick Trivia Question: Anyone know where they got their name from, or what it means in English (Note to subscribers of the Oriental persuasion: Let's see if any non-Oriental members can get this one, OK?)? I just picked up their first (?) album - from 1982; it's just called "HUANG CHUNG". That's right - this is before they changed the spelling to 'WANG CHUNG'. There are pictures of the group members (there were 4 of them back then) on the back; I don't recognize them - they look really weird! Now, let me get back on L42 topic: I'm sure many of us in the US are wondering about what VH1 is like in Europe (I've already gathered your VH1 is NOT the same one we've got here in the US - a blessing for you, to be sure!). Speaking of Alan's, how did Allan Holdsworth come onto the L42 scene? Was it through Gary Husband? I know the two of them worked together on some of Holdsworth's prior solo albums. With the return of Philip Gould, what has since happened to Gary Husband? Philip is great, but I can't complain about Gary Husband and would hope that he's still playing with some group.... FAB ------------------------------ Subject: The 1980's From: Fabfriday @ aol.com Date: Mon, 15 Jan 1996 14:05:47 -0500 I know I'm flooding the Digest, but I'd like to know what groups you all listened to during the 1980's..... So many of them are gone now, Level 42 prevailed, at least until Oct. 1995. There was so much music from Europe, Austrailia, and the US. I'd like to keep in touch with any of our UK club members through the net... I've yet to visit England, but have always loved the country.... FAB ------------------------------ Subject: Wally Badarou and Keyboard Players From: Fabfriday @ aol.com Date: Mon, 15 Jan 1996 14:05:42 -0500 In the last few Digests, I don't think I have once seen anyone mention Wally Badarou, who is a major contributor to the band in: writing, instrumentation, and producing. He is a fine keyboard player (for all of us who play) and I found a used copy of his CD "Words Of A Mountain" and must say I rather enjoy it. It's not the same as Lindup (another master of the keys) but has more of a New Age feel to it. I recomend it to those who enjoy keyboards and New Age music. For those of you who seek out L42-Type instrumentals, try looking into one of the band's early influences, Jan Hammer. Mike Lindup's early playing style and sound selection is almost identical to many of Hammer's early tracks. I recomend Jan Hammer (pronounced Yon Hahmer). Recomended Jan Hammer Albums: (Still in the US) 1) The Early Years 2) Escape From Television 3) Beyond The Minds Eye 4) Drive He has worked with so many artists through the years and has built up quite a discography,( virtually all out-of-print in the US) including collaborations with Jeff Beck and Neal Schon of Journey. He has scored movies and tv shows, most famous was his work on the Miami Vice series, and he now scores for the Vanishing Son series.... Recomendations from a keyboardist..... I will be phoning Crockford this afternoon, depending on how my exam goes, to ask about Mark's album, news on the video he's putting together, and any other news he has. Ill try to post any info I find out as soon as possible. I have just bought 'My Fathers Shoes' 7" promo in promo sleeve Cat. No. Level 342, its nice. I also got 'Heaven In My Hands 7" promo' and 'Love Games' white breaker flexi. I still have a copy of 'The Sun Goes Down' to swap, on 7". For anyone who's interested 'Early Tapes' was released twice in the UK. Once before 'The Pursuit Of Accidents' on Polydor/Level music, and once after just n Polydor. Both releases have the same sleeves but different labels. Also the 12" with the Remixes on from 'the Platinum Edition' was not released seperatly, but was bound onto the original 'Running In The Family' LP with a silver sash. All this constant talk about FN +4, FN +2, FN +7-3*23/7 etc etc etc is irritating me. I think someone should get hold of the Griffin release and put the details on the home page once and for all. I notice that we have a few new members on the digest, please if you have any rare promo mixes could you mail me, I many rare tracks and am desperate to trade tapes. Also if anyone has information on rare songs (Oh no here he goes again) such as 'Mourning', 'The Happening', 'Haunted House', 'Night Train' or anything else that didnt make an album or B-side please mail me. Well I have haf an hour to go before my 'Structural Mechanics' exam, I am quite nervous to say the least. For whoever it was who asked, Ill be asking Crockford about any provisional tour dates for Mark. But I also agree with the fact that picking a "best" L42 song is potentially a futile effort, they're all great. It's probably just me, but did anybody ever get the idea that a movie where the overall theme and flow of the story were dictated by L42 songs. For those of you who are comic fans, I approached some guys in the comic book industry about a series where the storyline of each issue would be peppered with lyrics from one or two L42 songs. We never got around to pitching the idea, but I converted three guys into loyal fans. Which brings me to thing proud announcement: I am now the father of a 6-year old hard core L42 fan. All it took was letting him play the Level Best laserdisc once. Now I have to fight him for the Running in the Family CD (Lessons in Love, Running in the Family, To Be With You Again) and I think he's pinched my other discs and my discman. He wants to play bass and refuses to answer to his given name. Now we have to call him Mark, although he will answer to Mike, Phil or Boon (albeit a little peeved). The following request comes from him: My daddy has a music file on the computer that plays Lessons in Love, but he says he doesn't have anything else for the computer. I think he's lying to me so that I won't play on the computer too much. I got a Lessons in Love MIDI file from a site, but the file is almost all rhythm. There are no substitutes for the vocals in any way shape or form. Does anyone know of any sites that may have L42 MIDIs. I know that to some this may be sacrilege, but it is for a budding musician. Thanks for any info.
