It's on the live double where three tracks were chopped off to accomodate a single CD pressing. Hence I haven't bought the CD version. 'Fraid I can't remember the track though. BTW, I have located my old L42 tapes. I'm glad I did too! There's at least three 'live-in-concert' type gigs as well as the two interviews I was looking for. I've started transcribing them (limited interest I know, but it's what us fans do, isn't it?) so stay calm and I'll post them here when I've finished. Working on the CD was truly a 'labor of love', and Winston and I enjoyed working on it immensely. Hopefully we will get a chance to do the live CD(s) soon and scan some good artwork and come up with a good title/set of liner notes. It's nice to see that all this talking about shirts and CDs that we've been doing for the last year has finally come to fruition. The digest is really hoppin! It's great to hear different Level 42 songs after all these years of playing the same ones a thousand times (not that I ever get sick of them :-)). I like the song At This Great Distance, but it seems very different from a lot of their other stuff (except where Mark talks - that reminds me of the middle of Man). My favorite B-side is The Return of the Handsome Rugged Man, hands down. Very jazz-funk with a lot of bass and great drumming. Those of you who have gotten or are getting the AYGB 80-94, what do you all think? To answer the question of where "Come on Philip, you can tell me!" comes from: the answer is the intro to the song 88 on the Physical Presence vinyl/cassette. Have a good weekend, everyone! Did you know..............that on the album "Staring @ the Sun" on the song 'take a look', that a lyric appears to be different than what Mark is actually singing? Perhaps this is a common 'music' thing, but I just had to share it. The lyric is as follows: "You can keep your fancy dress, 'Cos to me YOU dont impress" What Mark King actually sings: "You can keep your fancy dress, 'Cos to me IT dont impress" WOA! Revelation huh?!?!? As I type this, I realize something; this comes from a girl who has way to much time on her hands. (actually, that's not true) Anyhow, next time you listen to that album, whip out the words and..........take a look. :) "Going up madam?" "Yes." "What level?" "42, thanks"......... :) rnm ------------------------------ Subject: Introduction From: Donald Vanpraag Date: Fri, 24 May 1996 17:28:51 -0400 Hi folks! This is my first message to the digest and I have to say I'm so impressed! I was getting a little discouraged with my obsession with Level 42, as no one I knew had ever heard of the group. The US is a horrible place to be a fan of the group and California even more so, since everything revolves around the newest music. To find this page and so many other devout fans makes me feel so excellent! Now a little history: My name is Donald Ramakers; I recently changed my last and middle names. I have been a fan of the group since 1986, with the limited airplay of the Running In The Family album. I was struck by the meaning in the group's lyrics and later on by that incessant bass line of Mark's. Over several years my liking grew to overtake my favorite group before then, ELO. Mark inspired me to become a bass player, although I must admit that I am a player more in name than in skill! Still it's a lot of fun to air guitar, which is hard enough most of the time. I have at current count 11 cds plus Mark's Influences. I have two versions of World Machine (the UK and US versions) and the platinum edition of RITF, which I picked up Berlin, Germany while stationed there in the Army. I have two LP's of RITF and Staring At The Sun, and one cassette of World Machine (UK release). I'm in the market for anything Level 42: T-shirts, rare cds, boxed sets, etc. If anyone knows how I can get them feel free to drop me a line. I won't be real upset if my box gets flooded! I missed my one opportunity to see the group in October 1988 in Berlin. It was the Staring At The Sun tour. I had been stationed in Berlin with the US Berlin Brigade for three months and my wife arrived just five days before the concert. I was just a little short on cash, so I elected to skip the concert, thinking that since I was to be in Berlin for nearly four years I would get another chance. Unfortunately, the group never came back to Berlin. To think I was ten miles away for two days and it was the only chance I'll ever get. Those of you who have seen them live cherish it. That's enough for now, yeah? Somebody drop me a line on stuff, just so I know you're out there. Live Forever Now. Dscout @ concentric.net ------------------------------ Subject: 'Come on Philip..." From: NPercival @ aol.com Date: Fri, 24 May 1996 19:01:51 -0400 Yo! The line "Come on Philip, you can tell me..." is in the first few seconds of '88' on the double LP of the live album 'Physical Presence'. By a bizarre coincidence I just checked this out and happened to drop the stylus on that exact groove. I'm not sure if the track listing for the CD was the same as the double LP - I seem to remember there were fewer tracks on the CD. Neil Percival ------------------------------ Subject: Kudos for B-side disc From: JVenzon @ aol.com Date: Fri, 24 May 1996 19:22:37 -0400 All those who have gotten (and are going to get) a B-side disc, Glad to read that Eric liked his disc. I must say that it is due to the mailing list that the B-side disc even got off the ground. Up until this point I was wasting time posting to alt.music.level-42, and NEVER getting any kind of response. I was convinced that I was the only living soul in the US that listened to Level 42. Then the list.... I've found my people! At any rate I wanted to take this opportunity to thank Rob Devlin for his mixing ability in eq'ing the tracks to make them sound oh-so-much-better! >ALSO, John: you did a kick-ass job on this CD. Sound quality is totally >awesome... the tracks mastered from vinyl are extremely clean - freq. range >is very wide... S/N is high. You get my vote for sound engineer of the year! I'd have to share that award with Rob and his studio! His work made all the difference. For those of you who were wondering the path this little B-side disc has taken, here's a quick run down. A sort of how-to-do-it-kinda thing... 1) After deciding the track listing and order, I received all the tracks on compact disc, or in the case of the vinyl tracks, copied off of Winston's vinyl to DAT. 2) I loaded the tracks into my PowerMac via the Audiomedia II's digital inputs. From this point on the project stays digital until you put it into your CD player. In the case of the tracks that came from CD, they stay first generation all the way through. 3) I began the long (and did I mention mindless????) task of removing the vinyl clicks and pops at the sample level (by hand.. er... by mouse click, anyway..) using the Sound Designer II program. Since we are dealing with stereo tracks, each 'tick' or 'pop' had to be removed in a similar fashion on both the left and right channel. I spent about 5 hours per track declicking. 4) When I was done with my first pass, I burned a test disc and sent it to Rob at his studio. Rob then loaded it into his Sonic Solutions mastering system and EQ'd, compressed and generally massaged the tracks so that they all sounded like they were meant to be on one disc together. As the tracks stood before, some were quieter than others, and all the vinyl tracks had aged, losing some of their 'zing'. Rob put that back in. After finishing up, he recorded the tracks back out to DAT, and sent it to me. 5) I reloaded the tracks into my PowerMac, digitally, and went track by track comparing the original tracks to the newly EQ'd version that Rob had done. In 11 of the 12 tracks the EQ'd version sounded much better. The only track that didn't was 'At This Great Distance' which about 1:16 into the track went out of phase. Mark's voice went from dead center in the mix to all fuzzy and unfocused. I checked back to the original recording and found that it had happened when I loaded it into the system. I re-recorded the track again from disc and fixed the phase problem. I then raised the level and Eq'd -slightly- to match the new tracks. 6) I went over all the vinyl tracks a second time spending around 2 hours per track removing the clicks that I had missed. I was able to remove 80% of all the grunge without effecting the quality of the audio. If there was a chance that by removing a click that the music would be effected, I left it alone. The majority of my declicking work was on the track 'Forty One' which Winston informed me had a great big CRACK running right through the middle of it! I was able to remove ALL traces of that. 7) The last step was to make master discs for the other two folks burning discs, and start burning them for the rest of the list! 8) Sad to say, step 8 was to box up my recorder and send it back to the company... ARGGGG!! Oh well, a small price to pay for such a COOL disc! So again, BIG thanks go out to Winston for recording the vinyl tracks to DAT, to Rob and his wonderful Los Vegas studio for the tasty EQ'ing, to the Mystery 'Z' and 'J' for burning discs and to Winston (Again) and Lolita for doing the covers! And last but not least to Mark, Mike, Boon, Phil, Wally, Gary, Alan and Allan for creating the music that keeps us going....... -John ------------------------------ Subject: What Neil Peart of Rush said about Phil Gould's Drumming. From: Matt Rush Date: Fri, 24 May 1996 17:40:31 -0700 (PDT) Ever since someone mentioned that Neil Peart of Rush commented on Phil's Drumming, I have been curious to what he actually said. I now have found it on the internet and I thought you guys might like to see it. Here is what Neil Peart said, "A good drummer that I like who plays simply is Phil Gould, who used to be with Level 42. He plays very simple, R&B-influenced drumming, but when he pulls a fill out it'll be a beautiful fill. And his feel is great. If you try to tap along with their downbeat-on-the-3 type of songs, you'll just about break your hand trying to come down behind the beat as much as he does. He has that feel down so well. It's very satisfying for me to listen to from a drummer's point of view or from a music fan's point of view. It feels great, has tremendous authority, and has the spice of a great little fill leaping out of it." (Taken from Modern Drummer-December 1989) Another thing I have always wondered about the Goulds, is where does their lyrical influence come from? I hold much admiration of their lyrics and would like to know how they came up with them. In the distorted lyrics posted to RITF it mentioned their father as having won the Nobel Prize, does he have any significant influence on their lyrics. If anybody knows the answers to these questions, please let me know. The Always Curious, Matt Rush ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V96 #145 From: crow @ MNSi.Net (Steve "Crow" Kenney) Date: Sat, 25 May 1996 03:41:15 -0400 Hi, First time reply to the digest, I hope I replied correctly. Whatever the case, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Steve, and I live in Windsor, Ontario Canada. I have a couple years of my music - education degree, majoring in Tuba, however I spent over 12 years on percussion and Piano lessons as well. I have a taste for complex music, counterpoint and such. Years ago when I discovered Level 42 for their poetic aspect of their music, I was turned on, and loved it ever since. In my heart they are my favourite band, and have been for years. I really enjoy basslines, and Mark King was able to add to my enjoyment. It seemed that with all the band-member's different musical abilities, that they meshed together VERY well. The music, as well as the lyrics, once broken down was obviously well thought out. I enjoy their music so much, its beyond words. Nevertheless, my point in making this post, is not only to introduce myself, but as well to ask everyone else, what they think of "Forever Now"? I have only had it for 2 weeks, as not having access to the net, I wasn't able to find out it even existed here in Canada! I ordered it frow CDNOW and have not stopped listening since. I have the one with the 4 extra tracks on it. My favourite song so far, has to be The Bends... I also enjoy Play Me, and I REALLY love the moving bass to that sunbed song.. I found this CD to be VERY unusual.. didn't seem to be like them. It was more "dance" style than I liked, but after listening for a while, I realized everything was there inside, that made them so great. Just covered over, with what probably some executive wanted from them. Its a shame they had to break up, but now I will support whatever solo endeavors they go for. THanks for your time, and what is your favourite song on the new CD?
