From: paulmc @ sinbad.nsc.com (Paul McKernan - proc_dev) Date: Thu, 23 May 1996 11:45:23 +0100 Greetings one and all, This is my first message to the list; just thought I'd introduce myself. My name's Paul McKernan and I live in Greenock, which is 30 miles west of Glasgow, Scotland. I've been a massive fan of Level 42 since 1984, right after I heard "Hot Water" for the first time. Listening to their stuff also inspired me to take up playing the bass. As for my collection, I have all the CDs, except for Mark King's solo album "Influences", which I have on vinyl. From their videos I have "Live at Wembley", "Fait Accompli", "Level Best" & "Live in Concert" from the Guaranteed tour. I managed to get to see them live four times, and they will always be one of the best live acts I've seen. Well, that's enough inane drivel from me. I'll look forward to reading future digests and hearing from fellow funksters. One question, does anyone have the B-side "Can't Walk You Home"? I have a tape recording of it which has faded over the years and would mind getting hold of a better copy. ------------------------------------------------ "Blind Faith makes such strange demands, Sometimes I think I'll never understand..." ------------------------------ Subject: Wings of Love - once live ?! From: Alexander Thomas Date: Thu, 23 May 1996 15:51:41 +0200 (MET DST) Hi all, in the biography there is written, that the voice on 'Wings of Love' was double- tracked. (...) but when they went live, singing it was horrendous. So my question: Did they never played 'Wings of Love' live. If not on which concert, and exists somewhere a copy of the live track ??? Nice weekend to all, - ALEX - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 May 1996 17:44:33 -0400 From: "Friesen, Alex" Subject: Freely trading Philip Freely trading Philip 96/05/22 17:17 So I get this notice stuffed through my mail slot wot sez that a parcel awaits me at the local postal outlet. "Yoopee!", I sez to meself, "Must be the Ts". Then I takes a closer look, and the notice indicates $13.10 in COD charges. "Bloody hell!" I thinks, beginning to get irate at Zak. So I sidle on down to the postal place to pick up the package. Sure 'nuf, it's the long awaited Ts. Then I look at the itemized bill, and it tells me that the declared goods are subject to duty or $3.28, goods and services tax of $4.82, with $5.00 for handling added on for good measure. That's $80.00 for two T-shirts!!!!! So I mentally apologize to Zak and shift my death-ray gaze to Canada Customs in general. The shirts, I must say, are excellent! Well done Zak. I've pulled the pins out of the voodoo doll; hope your neck's okay. The moral of the story: lie to customs!!! Er, well, maybe not. Can somebody show me an example of the free trade the USA and Canada are "enjoying"? On another note... My first nephew is 6 days old now. His name? Philip, of course. A fine choice for the nephew of a drummer. Query: I'm sure that on an album somewhere Mark says "Come on Philip, you can tell me", but I can't find it. Perhaps on the missing-from-CD live tracks? ...Alex... The only direct web link to the discography right now is an FTP link, which means that if there are too many users on the FTP server at swcp.com you'll get a goofy error. If that happens you can just try again in a couple of minutes, use the search engine (not typing any search commands will give you the full discog), or request an emailed copy the file by mailing discogs @ swcp.com with the command GET LEVEL.42. One of my dozens of little side projects is to change the interface to the discographies I serve, one side effect of which would be to make them accessable by a single http: URL without your having to go through an interface page to do it. I think the interface pages will be nice enough that people will be better off linking to them, though, rather than pointing to a specific URL that just downloads the whole thing... -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo @ swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) ------------------------------ Subject: Platinum Discography From: Daniel James Organization: Statistical Sciences Date: Thu, 23 May 1996 09:52:01 -0700 > Is the discography accessible from the Web page? I'm not a completist, but I usually buy whatever I can find--just to have. If you want the Remixes of Lessons in Love, Running in the Family, It's Over, Something About You, and World Machine, then it's worth it. If you want it because it's Grey... Hansen" Date: Thu, 23 May 1996 14:53:38 -0400 (EDT) Peoples, Well here I am at work, listening to AYGB'80-'94 and wearing (for the first time) my Level 42 T-shirt. I am truly standing... no make that _basking_ in the light! These two items are the fruits of alot of of labor (of love!) by many individuals on the digest, and I thank you all greatly! Special shout outs to John, Winston, and Lolita for the production on the CD's. Also, big handshakes to Zak and Nigel for making the shirts finally happen. Your time, effort and generosity are truly Level class! In other news, I resigned from my job this past Monday... no need to worry, though - worldmachine.com (and all WWW/mailing list resources) will continue to thrive. There is some chance that I'll be relocating to San Francisco to join another firm, and if that happens, worldmachine.com may be down for as much as a week. There will be plenty of advanced warning, though, so don't anyone fret! Until then, I'm trying to figure out my next move... one thing for sure is that I'm headed into the Internet / WWW engineering niche full-on... yep, I'm a geek for life! So I've been putting in alot of hours listening to the never-before-heard-by-me tracks from AYGB... 42, Beezer One, Freedom, At This Great Distance, and As Years Go By. I'm still compiling some commentary, but I am really impressed by As Years Go By - definitely a "choice" selection to name the CD project after. Other preliminary comments: At This Great Distance seems like Rush might do a good cover, Beezer One reminds me vaguely of Supertramp (and nice quotes from Turn It On live), and the horns on AYGB rock! ALSO, John: you did a kick-ass job on this CD. Sound quality is totally awesome... the tracks mastered from vinyl are extremely clean - freq. range is very wide... S/N is high. You get my vote for sound engineer of the year! BTW, for Paul McKernan (message above): Can't Walk You Home appears on the 1996 "Turn It On" compilation, although it is a shortened edit. I've seen this CD at various chains here in Boston for US$12.99. Note that the "full length" version (with more bass!) can be found on AYGB. Well, that's about it for now! -Eric "too modest to sign 'The Handsome Rugged Man'" Level 42 Digest List Admin p.s. I've also just acquired Lisa Stansfield's two CD's. Reminiscent of Incognito and BNH... jazzy and clubby - nice vocals and production. -- Eric J. If you want one, you can still send me an email with '**I want one**' in the subject line, and I'll keep track of them in case we start making more. If you have heard from myself or one of the other two people burning discs, don't worry, you will get a disc. What this means for this and the future live and remix discs is: WE NEED MORE PEOPLE WITH COMPACT DISC RECORDERS!! If you have access to one or are planning on buying one, email me right away at jvenzon @ aol.com or jvenzon @ primenet.com! We can't do any more until we get some help. I will continue to put together the master discs and burn up to 20 for each disc (not 45 like this time...), but we have to make up for 160 more recordings. I want to thank everyone for getting so involved in the project, it's a great disc. Here's hoping that we can do more of them!! Our 4 digit phone extensions all begin with 55, followed by our pager numbers. Mine's 42. As if you couldn't have guessed :-) p.s. Hey, Dave. What's new? Good to see you back. _/_/_/ Martin C.
