LittleHalo ------------------------------ Subject: Bleeker Bob's From: WINMAN @ gnn.com (WINSTON WALKER) Date: Tue, 21 May 1996 08:26:30 Interesting to find out that there is a Bleeker Bob's in L.A. I have to say that I always found the NY stores prices reasonable. I picked up "Changes" on CD the week it was released for $15.99 I find this extremely reasonable, especially when you consider that Tower Records & HMV are charging $22.00 for Forever Now in NY. Winston ------------------------------ Subject: IOWII / Take Care Of Yourself / Other stuff From: Mr Fish Date: Tue, 21 May 1996 13:48:49 +0100 (BST) Er, like "Hello" and stuff...?* First of all I'd like to join you all on the seconsd Ilse Of Wight trip planned for early July. I did post a message to this effect a couple of days ago - but it never seemed to appear (ho hum). I'm not sure who I should be mailing directly about this, so I'll mail to the digest (hello everybody). Also, I think Marcus Bone [k940372 @ crystal.kingston.ac.uk] wants to come along as well (although I'm not sure if he knows yet). The lyrics to Take Care of Yourself seem to make much more sense that I thought they did... I agree with many of those who have posted their original interpretations of the lyrics. I have to say, though, the bit at the beginning of TKOY - ie 'Are you ready to rock..?' and even more so: 'Are you ready for it? Get down on it?' are by far (and when I say 'far' I mean it in the magnitude of "It's quite far to Jupiter") the WORST Level 42 lyrics I've ever heard. They remind me of a Bros concert I accidently saw 20 seconds of when I was channel hopping about five years ago - when Mat Goss (or was it the other one?) shouted into the crowd "ARE YOU READY TO ROCK!! I SAID ARE YOU READY TO ROCK!!!" in the most feeble and pathetic voice you ever heard. In my opinion, the opening lines of TKOY don't sound feeble, they just sound very cheesy (and when I say "cheesy", I don't mean the mild English Chedder you get from Sainsburys - I mean the strongest of brie or stilton). Last point - this may not be that interesting.... but the people who designed the Forever Now single artwork also did all the Sugercubes and Bjork album / single artwork. Isn't that amazing?! No? Damn. Last point plus one - our UNIX server is called Osiris, and so I've typed the lyrics "Osiris Weigh my soul...." etc in my .plan. (what do you mean 'so what?'). Er, bye then... David. * Shut up Beavis! Don't make me kick your ass again..! ------------------------------ Subject: SATS, Giraffe, and Thank you's. From: Marc_Dupuis @ MADISONUSA.CCMAIL.CompuServe.COM Date: 21 May 96 11:00:49 EDT Hello DJ-RJ! >I checked out a nice CD the other day that I thought ya'll might want to >know about. It's called "A Show Of Hands" by Victor Wooten (of Bela Fleck >& the Flecktones). The man can play a bass--if ya didn't know. The whole >album is just him and the BASS, lotsa slappin', and a little bit of >vocals. It really reminds me of the time when Mark was playing by himself >during sound-check on the Fait Accompli video. This guy is a monster, is he not! I saw Bela Fleck & co. a couple of years ago - truly a unique and talented act. Is Future Man a trip or what? >Also I still have a "Staring At The Sun" CD if someone wants it. I definitely want this! Please email me with your conditions, Thanks! Re: Kevin Gilbert's passing - truly we have lost a great songwriter. Anybody who hasn't heard the Toy Matinee album is really missing out. The man was a great producer and performer as well, I could go on and on... Long live The Giraffe! Hello Joe Smith! Thank you for the cassettes of FN & FN+4. Much different than I expected, what a turn from the previous two albums. I don't even know what to think yet, I'll spend some time digesting this then give my twisted opinions. -Marc ------------------------------ Subject: RCA/BMG Version of Forever Now From: Cliff Barua Date: Tue, 21 May 1996 15:50:31 +0000 (GMT) Anyone (UK or North America): I'd like a suggestion for a place (on-line or otherwise) in the UK, US or Canada, where I could pick up the 1994 UK version of Forever Now (RCA/BMG 74321-18996-2 according to Laszlo's Discography). Website address, e-mail, or phone number, and approximate price (if known) would be much appreciated. It would be great if any of my fellow Canadians know of a place in this country. ------------------------------ Subject: Hey There From: TTrudell @ aol.com Date: Tue, 21 May 1996 19:21:47 -0400 1) I've heard mention of the band Go West here before so I recently acquired their "Best of" CD. One really great song "Faithful" stuck in the middle of some seriously lackluster synth-pop, IMHO. Vocals rather Boltonish. But "Faithful" and "King of Wishful Thinking" are pretty good. 2) Again, anybody hip to the band Junk? If not, you are missing the phattest (translation: most wide) grooves. It's a jazz combo - Bass that gets into your DNA, Bari Sax ala Coltrane on prozac, funk guitar mostly played through a wah pedal and a Leslie speaker simultaneously, and crisp drums. Very listenable. 3) When does Live at Wembley come out anyhoo? -Tom ------------------------------ Subject: Who was Kevin Gilbert? From: John Edward Martin Shuford Date: Tue, 21 May 1996 17:40:58 -0700 (PDT) Thanks go out to all of the inquiries from those of you who were Kevin's fans, and thanks to those who don't know Kevin's work but would like to learn more. I'll give a brief list of the work I know of. If anyone knows of more, please contact me: Kevin released his first solo album, "Thud," in 1994. This also came with a 5-track EP on later releases, featuring his cover of Led Zep's classic "Kashmir." Kevin had been working on his second album, tentatively titled "The Saga of Johnny Virgil," a old time radio program style rock opera. I had heard one song, "Smash," that was hysterically funny. Other bands for Kevin? Well, his first band was Giraffe, winners of the 1987 Yahama Sound Check contest, and the song "This Warm Night" was featured on MTV's Basement Tapes (remember that show???). Giraffe did two albums, "The Power of Suggestion" and "The View From Here." Kevin had also recently been in a band called Stanley Snail, featuring Nick D'Virgilio, Mike Keneally, and Bryan Beller. They performed "Siberian Khatru" on the Yes tribute album "Tales From Yesterday." But his big, "well known" band was Toy Matinee, who released an eponymous album in 1990. You may recall the song "There Was A Little Boy," which was a hit. Toy Matinee was comprised of Kevin, Patrick Leonard, Brian MacLeod, Guy Pratt, Tim Pierce, and produced by Bill Bottrell (some backing vocals from Julian Lennon, too). Kevin was also involved in a number of other people's projects. Recently he was involved with Spock's Beard, Ragged Clause, and Gentle Giant in a production capacity (GG was one of Kevin's main influences, along with Genesis, Peter Gabriel, LZ, Yes, and Pink Floyd). He had appeared on projects from Marc Bonilla, David Baerwald, Fire Merchants, and Mike Keneally. Kevin had also contributed performance or production to Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Eddie Money. Then there was the Sheryl Crow thing. Kevin was seeing Sheryl at the time, and he introduced her to the Tuesday Music Club, a group of people he hung out and jammed with. Well, one thing led to another, and Kevin and the rest of the Tuesday Music Club (which became Tues Night Music Club for the album) wrote, played and produced a huge selling Grammy winner. Also, if any of you listen to the Mark & Brian Show, you've probably heard Kevin on there before, as he was a "friend" of the show. Finally, two last bits. First, Kevin wrote a song for Toy Matinee called "The Ballad of Jenny Ledge," which he swore was a true story. Seems once upon a time he was seeing a Solid Gold dancer who left him for an Elvis impersonator. Even if it's true, it's a nice example of how funny Kevin was. Second, there is, after all, a link to L42 here. Actually, there's two. When I met Kevin we talked about a variety of music, including L42. Also, his former drummer, Nick D'Virgilio, is out on the road with Tears For Fears. TFF had Annie McCaig sing backup vocals on "Big Chair," were once managed by Paul Crockford, and had basically the ensemble from Lindup's solo album play the "Seeds of Love" album. So there! ------------------------------ Subject: notes of thanks From: Rob Kadel Date: Tue, 21 May 1996 22:36:08 -0400 (EDT) Hi, all. I just wanted to send a couple of notes of thanks to two people on the list. First to Zak for the t-shirt -- I just got it when I returned from vacation yesterday and it is INCREDIBLE! I got several inquisitive comments on it today. Second to Sonoi-san :) for the sticker -- I put it right on the top of the cab of my truck and have enjoyed driving around Atlanta blasting "Man" or "Play Me." Hopefully people will make the connection between what they hear and what they read. ;-) Also, to everyone who endured another semester of school (including myself) congratulations. Summer's here. I for one will be enjoying it! I have in the past mentioned Victor on the digest with no response. I feel he is almost on the same level as Mark. Really. This man can play the bass!!! I highly recommend any work featuring him. Bela Fleck and The Flecktones is an excellent start. Anyone ever heard of Kai Eckhardt-Karpei? Excellent bassist as well. Appears on the Vital Information CD release - "FIAFIAGA". Eric turned us on to this album late last year and I have been looking for it ever since. Phil cowrote 2 songs and plays keys and "beats" on one of them and piano on the other. He takes a really decent turn on the piano! Annie McCaig and Danny Blume make contributions as well. well worth picking up. Thanks again for the tip Eric. Grab 'em while you can> I don't know if this was a fluke or if they have a supply or supplier but thet may not last. Just telnet musicexpress.com Has anyone gotten any new word on the release of the live album or the other remix album? C ya'll Mike ------------------------------ Subject: CD-R information! I am heading out to the states on Tuesday next week, first Orlando for a day and then onto Lucasville, Ohio. I am staying with my friend Kurt, anyone on the digest know Kurt Kegley? He is big Level 42 fan with a huge collection of stuff, he also collects everything specially Howard Jones, Amy Grant and Christian music. This means I wont be here for two weeks and when I get back the University may have closed my account. Dont worry If I owe you tapes, I have made most of the ones I am sending. (I have just about completed yours Nathan). Also, I start my year in industry in September so I wont be in Univesity again till October 1997, Sob I may never see some of you again. I will try to buy a modem and get on-line myself, I will also ask if my account can be left open that will solve everything. I will probably ring Crockford on Friday and let everyone know whats going on on Monday. Till then.................... LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: Was the CBS show called.... From: LittleHalo @ aol.com Date: Wed, 22 May 1996 03:37:13 -0400 The Rock and Roll Evening News? I saw that a while ago some on this list were talking about Level being on a CBS show here in the US but they could not remember what it was called. I didn't know if this question was ever resolved. Now that Winston sent me a tape of their appearance on this show, it looked similar to what you described. I hope I helped someone out Angel
