I wasn't expecting them to be quite so good so it was a real surprise to see the great quality. Well, Trivally speaking, it doesn't sound like "awfun." Don't you just love trying to describe something audible when all you have is ascii characters? Maybe Synth could put two .wav files on the L42 web page -- "The correct English and American ways of pronouncing the word 'orphan'." That would be fun. -Rob ;-) [and add to that the formal definition of a "git"... although I seem to recall that Amanda Paulette has dedicated a whole WWW page to the subject =) -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: BOSTON: Howard Jones From: "Eric J. Hansen" Date: Fri, 17 May 1996 11:15:29 -0400 (EDT) Totally off topic (can't even think of a common thread! Pat? Any common session players you can think of?)... For you Boston fans, Howard Jones is playing at Mama Kins on Lansdowne St. on Saturday the 18th (FYI, this is the club that Aerosmith owns). I'm thinking about going -- I used to be a big fan (Human's Lib is a great album), but have not kept up with his more recent stuff. Email me if you're planning on going - this is his "unplugged" acoustic tour. He is also supposed to be making an in-store appearance at Border's Books in Boston, as well as attending some celebrity softball game. BTW, This info comes courtesy of Bob Gajarsky's "Consumable" e-zine. -Eric -- Eric J. Speaking of... I just picked up the Resurgence version and have given it a couple of listens. It'll take some time to get used to it but sounds more Level 42-ish than Guaranteed (welcome back, Phil!). I was thinking....if we do a follow-up to the "b-sides.." (with live stuff and all), how about including "Tired Of Waiting" and "All Over You" so that a completist wouldn't have to also buy the RCA/BMG or Japanese version (namely me). I guess the same arguement could be made for those who don't have the Resurgence version (i.e. adding the 5 songs (without "Time Will Heal")), but I thought most people were buying this version for the superior mix AND the FIVE extra songs (not just two). What does everyone think? If this ain't gonna happen, how about some U.K. residents suggesting places and decent prices to order the RCA/BMG version from? (e-mail privately if you wish). Also, if a second (live/other tracks) cd is in the offing, maybe everyone would be better off holding on to their extra blank cd's, rather than burning 3 copies of the same disc. At $29 US, that's approximately $42 Canadian (yes, Level $42), a little dear for someone trying to complete some odds and ends in his collection. I'm hoping to buy a blank disc locally (say $15 Canadian) and taking it to my local list burner. So, is the second disc up for consideration? (I know, lets get this disc out first!) And to conclude: I grew up in the East End of London, and in Cockney, orphan would sound like the same way Eastenders would say "awful"..... i.e. "aooh-fun" and "aooh-ful"; in North America (most places) this would be "oar-fun" and "awh-ful" (no connection whatsoever). So that's probably why Loz wrote "awfun" in his South Yorkshire way (but at least his sentences are getting shorter, and grammar, yes!!). Well done, LOZ! Just as I start to burn discs, my recorder decides that it would be 'really funny' to start making drink coasters instead of playable CDs. There goes 10 blank discs. Ouch. So back to the factory it goes. This means that I was only able to make the masters for the 2 other folks and get out 8 discs. Everyone else will have to wait until I get it back from Irvine California. Sorry.... John P.S. Just 'cause I can't stand to see a dumb thread die... 1) > I know this thread is trivial with a capital 't' (so I suppose it's >Trivial, really then) but just how does "orphan" sound in an American >accent? Speaking as an American, I say it as 'oarfun' 2) In 'The Bends' the goofy little audio bells and muted voices are there to recreate the sound of a submarine. See... under water... come up to fast... get the bends... they are in a submarine!!! 3) "She Can't Help Herself" is about a young girl who was 'taken advantage of' (That is: An older man had sex with her, taking her virginity....) by a family friend. She wasn't 'oarfuned'. Bottom line, the pronunciation difference between North American and UK dialects of English centers on the fact that the first two letters are pronounced in N.A. with a definitive "o" sound, so that when you say the word, your lips make a round "o" shape at the first, where (I presume) in the U.K. perhaps the first sound is produced with an "ahh", where you open your mouth as though your doctor (G.P.?) is about to stick a tongue depressor in it. Hmm, now if this is true, then do we North Americans burn more calories going through that huge effort to make the "o" shape with our lips? Of course, this is all dependent on the part of N.A. (and U.K.) that you live in. Tucker, well, I have *no idea* how Tucker would pronounce it... Hmmm...the things we can write small essays on... Regards, Jody McDonnell ------------------------------ Subject: L42 Available on vinyl in LA From: LittleHalo @ aol.com Date: Fri, 17 May 1996 23:54:45 -0400 Hi y'all, I was checking out some record shops today and I found some semi-rare stuff some of you might be interested in. At a store in Burbank I found the US version of World Machine on vinyl. It was $2.99 I believe. At Bleecker Bob's Records on Melrose in Hollywood I found all on vinyl: Staring At the Sun, Running In the Family, World Machine (Original UK version!), True Colours, Standing in the Light, and The Pursuit of Accidents. In the SATS one, on the sleeve it said that lyrics and promo materials were included. They keep the stuff inside the sleeve, including the album itself, behind a counter before you buy it so I couldn't check out what this promo stuff was all about. The price range on those were about 10 to 25 dollars. Email me personally if you have any questions about this I may be able to answer. Angel ------------------------------ Subject: possible covers title? From: LittleHalo @ aol.com Date: Fri, 17 May 1996 23:54:47 -0400 How about "Level With Me" for the L42 covers tape that was proposed? I don't know who is organizing this so I addressed the digest. I sing so I wish I could be involved in making a cover version of my favorite band also but I just don't have the means to record it and I don't have a band to play it either! Why doesn't Elson's band Jibe contribute. I noticed that Jibe's bassist doesn't slap much but certainly there's a song or two by Level that doesn't require slapping. Maybe? Anyway, roll that title around and see how y'all like it. Personally, I think it's perfect! :-) Bye, Angel
