From: John Edward Martin Shuford Date: Tue, 14 May 1996 08:37:14 -0700 (PDT) Obviously this post is meant for Loz, but I think all should enjoy it. If you can honestly tell me that you think "when nearly a woman a friend of the family/took that away that was precious to give/she pretended nothing happened there/through the years" is about losing her parents, you've got a far different interpretation from any I've ever heard. Are you suggesting that someone in the adoptive family dispelled the myth that her parents were killed in an accident and let her know that her parent's really didn't want her??? The obvious interpretation is taking someone's virginity, and how she hid that fact away like so many other things. I honestly don't see how you can draw the other reading out of the lyrics. But my central point remains the same: just washing over all the bad stuff in your life with a "there'll be someone for sure" is pandering and inauthentic, and they should have left the subject matter alone if they couldn't pull it off any better than that. Well, Loz I have to disagree with you on this one. First of all, I have no idea what "awfun" means, and neither does my dictionary. Is this some British slang term? Furthermore, if the song is about rape (more specifically, statutory rape of a minor), then the lyrics fit the typical case perfectly. Most women who have suffered through such experiences as children react to the world exactly as described in the song. (I'm not just spouting opinion, but being the sociologist which I am (for once).) ;-) They pretend nothing happened to them, they are completely closed off in relationships, they "close the door and push away the pain." So on, so forth. Anyway, my $.02. -Rob ------------------------------ Subject: Level 57 From: Bruce_Conrad @ hchp.org Date: Tue, 14 May 1996 00:26:08 -0400 my comments on some recent threads... Mark's 'new' lyrics - I think it's funny that he inserted different words in some Live songs. I don't find it offensive. He was just trying to be humorous + break up the monotony. You might get tired of singing the same songs at every concert over + over + over again (even if they are songs you wrote). Loz - my book order is on the way. Jeremy - I got your "burnin'" email. I look forward to the Bside CD as soon as you can make it (no hurry). I won't be getting blanks from Matt, mainly because I'm real lazy. She can't help herself- my impression is that this song *is* about rape or something likewise. Boston levelheads - Sunday May 19 10-5pm @ HoJo 57 Park Plaza Hotel: N.E. From: lolita @ interserv.com Date: Tue, 14 May 1996 09:22:05 -0700 Calling all LevelHeads: Winston and I created the b-sides cover and liner notes in Pagemaker on my PC, and we then printed a few copies on my printer in the office. The printer is a $5,000 Tektronix, so the quality is superb, but obviously I couldn't print more than a few (it's really expensive and time consuming). We took the originals to my copy center and they agreed to print 20 of each sheet for free. The problem: There are eventually going to be 80-90 of these discs burned, in addition to two or three more discs being produced. We would like everyone to get a color copy of the cover, but neither Winston nor I have the resources to do so. Do any of you have access to a color copier? Please let me or Winston know ASAP and we will send you the printouts (lolita @ interserv.com, winman @ gnn.com). Thanxalot. Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Loz, Loz, Loz... Uh, Loz, I think you're way off base on that one. Sounds to me like she lost her parents and was either raped or had an otherwise unsatisfactory first sexual experience with a "friend of the family." >* For Pat or Zak: > Cool! The De La song begins with "Hey, how ya' > doin', sorry you couldn't get through, but if you leave your name and > your number, I'll get back to you..." very similar to the rant of Ben > Volpierre-Peirrot in the the beginning of "Name and Number". (This was back in my Smash Hits buying days - a UK teenage pop magazine.) Also they had a brief revival a few years back with a cover version ('Hang On In There Baby' in 1992) which featured Ben on roller blades on the video - in fact he even wore them on a tiny stage on Top Of The Pops. I was having a drink outside a pub in London last summer when who should saunter along but Ben himself, and I'm pleased to report he still wears his baseball caps back to front, but I can't tell you much more than that. As for Level 42 slow songs... 'Leaving Me Now' has served two practical purposes in my life: (1) for wallowing in when a relationship breaks up, and (2) in my days as a DJ, for clearing the dance floor at the end of the night when I wanted to go home. Much easier than sending them to everyone who asked for them (a lot) :) I had to create a new page for this (I had 15 spare minutes, so what the heck); you can get to it by either going to my home page as addressed in my sig, then going to the Music and Sounds page, then to My Level 42 Page, or just go here: http://www.jlc.net/~znilsson/L42.html All the pictures I captured from the video are up. Well, at least the ones that came out all right. I had meant to get the shot of Mark looking at the camera in that one shot when Mike is outside and below, but I think I accidentaly tossed it while I was weeding out the bad from the good. Not to worry, I'll just get it again, maybe this weekend. OK? So if you want those pics, go there! :) I can't put up the QT movies though, not enough server space. (unless I pay for it - eeww.) Besides, it would take many hours to download them. One last thing; I'd just like to pass on some of the thanks I've been getting for doing the shirts to Nigel Collier, who designed them. Thanks, Nigel! Zak Nilsson ZNilsson @ jlc.net http://www.jlc.net/~znilsson ------------------------------ Subject: AYGB '80-'94 CD... preview! From: "Eric J. I've put them up on the web along with the liner notes for the CD: http://www.worldmachine.com/level42/cd.html Note that there is *not* a link to this page from anywhere else (including the Digest's homepage). -Eric -- Eric J.
