Vince Mora ------------------------------ Subject: Typical Males From: John Edward Martin Shuford Date: Sun, 12 May 1996 13:11:43 -0700 (PDT) This is in reply to Lisa's post of yesterday. Lisa, my sense is that you won't find many "typical males" on this digest. Lots of individuals with pretty open minds seems more the way it is, at least to me. I'm glad that you've seen some of this already (e.g. the guys who dig the L42 ballads--personally, Lying Still and Good Man are two of my faves). On the lyrical question (LISA RESPONSE MODE OFF), I've always found She Can't Help Herself somewhat pandering and inauthentic. "Don't cry...there'll be someone for sure" makes it sound like all you need to get over the bad stuff in your life is some other person. Sorry, but I don't think losing your parents and being raped by a family friend just needs the curative of a partner you can share everything with. That song, for me, is as much of the difference in sensitivity and authenticity that Phil had and L42 Lite (1/2 the calories of your regular L42) did not. Just seemed a bit trite lyrically (and I'm afraid I feel the same way about Seven Years and With a Little Love, too). That was one of Phil's great strengths--he didn't compromise or rehash on the lyrics. But I think Mark came a long way on the Forever Now album, as Billy's Gone (both versions) sound very fresh and authentic to me (though they're not ballads). ------------------------------ Subject: videos and stuff!! From: JNSMITH @ msuvx2.memphis.edu Date: Sun, 12 May 1996 18:02:14 -0600 (CST) Hi Guys! Quickly, to Lisa Baylus, I can buy Fait Accompli and Level Best for you. $19.95 each at Planet Music in Memphis. Let me know if you want me to do that. Are there any videos out there besides the ones on Level Best and Family of Five. I would like to get some videos from Staring At The Sun, Guaranteed and Forever Now. I seem to remember someone asking about this before but I don't remember anyone answering the question. Also to Mike in Stillwater. How did you get your hands on a video of the final concert? I am sending you money to copy this for me. THANKS!!!!! JOE ------------------------------ Subject: Again, various things From: Zak Nilsson Date: Sun, 12 May 96 20:39:46 -0400 >> ps...Whatever happened to Curiosity Killed the Cat? > >No laughs here. I FINALLY found their only two(?) CDs, "Keep Your Distance" >and "Getahead", and they were in a cutout bin (hooray, $3 each!!). They had >a lot of potential, but weren't marketed well in the US, IMHO. I really liked their one hit song (that I know of); I never bought their album, though. They had a great groove. I have it on a tape somewhere...I can't remember the name of that song, but it was a good 'un. Wait, I just remembered; "Misfit" was the name. Great song. -------------------------------------- >>BTW--a question, at the end of the "Something About you" video, mark mouths >>some words into the camera--what are they? >The words are :"we're only human after all" >Always looked to me like "'cause there's something about you baby tonight >and I wouldn't without you tonight". I'd like to know also...I've ony had the video for a couple weeks and I haven't figured it out yet. ------------------------------------- And in other news, somebody asked about JPEG or GIF files of Mark in the "clown" outfit; well, I got 'em. I took a few screen shots of the Something About You video and also the first bits of the Leaving Me Now video with Mark in the clown outfit under a spotlight. I also now have the entire Something About You video and the Lessons In Love video in QuickTime format on my hard drive. They're about 27 MB each, so nobody's gonna get 'em via email, I don't think. :) But if anybody really really wants to get these videos in QT format, email me and we'll see what we can work out. Also, anybody that wants those pictures of Mark in the clown getup, email me and I'll send 'em to you.
