Video and Phil vs Gary Jerry Rehn RITF, Mark Vince Mora Re: Something About You Smashie ------------------------------ Subject: Subliminal Level 42 From: "Anthony Burns" Date: Sat, 11 May 96 10:48:42 UT Near the end of the movie "Brazil", there's an oblique reference to Level 42 (AKA the massive building they're in, LEVEL 41, LEVEL 43 can be seen...) Also look in one of En Vogue's videos. On the back right wall, while they're strutting their stuff, 'LEVEL 4_" is visible on the wall in big, black lettering. Could it be a coincidence? 42 is an unlucky number in Japan... Did you ever notice... On the video, RITF, there's never actually a shot of Phil's face in any kind of close up with the other guys. Plenty of long, wide-angle shots and solo close ups, but never all 4! Is it a Phil impostor! Probably not, but "Inquiring Minds Want To Know!" Also, is the girl that all the guys woo in "Something About You" the same woman in the "Taster's Choice" coffee commercials? "Love Games" In the BBc video of "Love Games", is that Wally Badarou making good on the percussion with the loud "LEVEL 42" football shirt? If not, then who is it? Trivia Time! Who is "Dana Coolshit" and where is this person now? Maybe Princess Diana knows... More "Inquiring Minds Want To Know" Why was the video for "It's Over" filmed twice? If it wasn't, Phil's hair grew about 5 cm in 6 hours. A blast from the past... Phil may wear those prescription Ray Bans, but Jerry Lee Lewis' drummer wore the same style of shades over 30 years ago. But Phil looks the coolest! Sincerely, Anthony ------------------------------ Subject: OK Already!! From: "Lisa.Baylus." Date: Sat, 11 May 1996 10:58:55 -0400 (EDT) WOA!!! What a reaction...All right...I get the point!!! Yes we are only human after all...Well if there is a kind soul out there who can copy Fait Accompli for me ( :) ) -- I have been unable to find that or Level Best...then I'll give you all my review. Unfortunately I think I had put the boys on a very high pedestal. So it came as a disappointment to find that Mark is a typical male. (Sorry guys!!) I was pleasantly surprised, however, by the reaction from guys who find the sad songs so appealing. Maybe there are more nice guys out there than I had thought. Members who have been on the chat will know who you are!! I won't name names unless you want the publicity!! :) Oh, and one more thing...I'm as guilty as everyone else of owning a very foul mouth, I just don't record it...well actually Eric did once!! Thanks again, Eric!! Later, Ain't this fun??? Action on the digest!!! ------------------------------ Subject: Whatever From: pfpd @ pobox.com (Pat Flanagan) Date: Sat, 11 May 1996 13:45:42 -0400 (EDT) >RE: RITF is talking about incest! > >"Like a drummer plays his drum, a father plays his son..." Sounds plausible. >What about "She Can't Help Herself"? : AAAAAAAAAAA! Wrong-o. Try "like a drummer plays his drum, LIKE A FATHER LIKE A SON." It's in the lyric sheet. >"When nearly a woman, a friend of the family >Took that away that was precious to give >She pretended nothing happened there >Through the years" No incest there (reread the second half of the first line). If anything, this paragraph is about a rape by someone trusted, and how the event shaped the subject's psyche. > ps...Whatever happened to Curiosity Killed the Cat? Hey, don't laugh. > I was young, I thought they were good... (looking) > I was rummagging through some old stuff, and I came across their > albums. Just a wonderin'... No laughs here. I FINALLY found their only two(?) CDs, "Keep Your Distance" and "Getahead", and they were in a cutout bin (hooray, $3 each!!). They had a lot of potential, but weren't marketed well in the US, IMHO. Video and Phil vs Gary From: lonestar @ redshift.com (Jerry Rehn) Date: Sat, 11 May 1996 16:46:35 -0700 Hey, Hey! >BTW--a question, at the end of the "Something About you" video, mark mouths >some words into the camera--what are they? >Jody!! The words are :"we're only human after all" >Of course it's strictly prefernce, but I also go on record as a Phil fan. He >just always seemed to know where to play and where not to play. A bass >player who plays like Mark needs a smart, mature drummer like that to stay >alive. And his cymbal work is fantastic. I second that. Being a drummer myself, I can appreciate both drummer's styles however. Phil indeed does have that cymbal work down to a science. I have noticed several things while listening to both the Phil and Gary eras. There are some times when I felt that Phil wasn't busy enough and times when I thought that Gary wasn't restrained enough. I believe that at the end of the day, they have felt that way a time or two after listening to the final product. That's where the live performances come into play for me. They can do what they may have wanted to do once the album was cut and finalized. Like a drummer plays his drum... - Jerry ------------------------------ Subject: RITF, Mark From: "Vince Mora" Date: Sat, 11 May 1996 17:53:11 -0600 (MDT) Anthony Burns writes: > RE: RITF is talking about incest! > > "Like a drummer plays his drum, a father plays his son..." Sounds plausible. Um, couldn't this just as likely be about psychological control? (Another form of abuse in itself) > What about "She Can't Help Herself"? : > > "When nearly a woman, a friend of the family > Took that away that was precious to give > She pretended nothing happened there > Through the years" > > Same difference This is about rape and molestation. A *lot* more serious than the tense family in "RITF", wouldn't you say? I'm a bit disturbed at how flippantly you regard the lyrics in "SCHH", which I find very powerful and moving. But to each his own ... -- John Edward Martin Shuford writes: > (by the way, two others come to mind: there's an interview > archived on Synth's page where Mark says that he always thought female > cello players sexy because of the way they hold the cello between their > legs; Being a classical musician I have to say I feel the same way. :-) But I think this is simply a sexual image, not a sexist one. What is sexist in finding female cellists attractive? Can't people find male cellists attractive for the same reason? -- Roxanne Moore writes: > Ok.......there's a lot of freaks in this world, that do a lot of REALLY sick > things......that NEVER get ripped apart as eloquently as Mark King has been. Well said! Let's follow Roxanne's example and put Mark's antics into perspective here, folks. Always looked to me like "'cause there's something about you baby tonight and I wouldn't without you tonight". Recognisable? If I'm right, what on earth were the video makers thinking of. IMHO it looks like they didn't have any material to cover that bit and had to stick SOMETHING in. It's one of the greatest videos in my collection otherwise. By the way, thanks for all the Boston responses to my potential visit. You guys are great. There's a chance my plans might change by a few days... but there will be no excuse for us not all getting together. I'm seriously looking forward to it - and I'll let you know future developments!
