That was always one of my favorite songs anyway, but I paid closer attention to the drumming than normal. His timing and style are what makes the song, IMO; particularly the fit between the bass and the drums. I haven't heard anything in Gary Husband that comes close to hitting me as strongly (no pun intended) as Phil does in that song. Opinions to the contrary are welcome. " Now I agree with the idea that Phil is a consummate pro, and he probably helped keep Mark grounded (he was a perfect foil for Mark), I don't agree with your assessment of Gary's playing. I saw him last year with Billy Cobham (former drummer for Mahavishnu Orchestra, Allan Holdsworth and Miles Davis) and he was phenomenal. From a technical standpoint, it wouldn't be too far off to say he leaves Phil at quite a distance. But, based on what Gary's forte seems to be (heavy duty fusion/odd time avant garde-jazz), Level 42 was not his cup of tea. Of course he would have to wait a while for the iron to heat up. I think if he then laid the pants over the snare drum Phil would know who had been - he would also then be able to imitate Garys sound. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL WE HAVE GOT HOLD OF MARK AND ARRANGED A PERSONAL GIG !!!! IT WILL BE TOO LATE. Nail your "True Colours" to the mast now for all to see. EMail me direct or the digest and let's get going. Here are some of the suggestions of what we could try to organise. LOZ suggested hiring a room above a pub and playing tunes and drinking beer. We could try to hire Joe Daflo's for the night ? I think I remember that there is a "copy" band in Sweden or somewhere that plays only Level 42 stuff and calls itself Level 43 or similar What about them coming? Also there is talk of digest members recording their own versions of Level 42 songs, why not put a "band" together to play in LOZ's room above the Pub? Maybe Mark King's New Band could be interested in trying out their new tracks and live show on us ! If your flying from the US or Europe you will probably save the airfare on really cool Level 42 stuff at UK prices alone. and drink warm beer !!!! Anyway... Let's hear from all you interested people NOW NOW NOW. The more interest we get the more likely we can organise a real stonking good Level 42 Rave ! NB The word Stonking continues to appear by kind permission from Smashie, and any resemblance to the word Bonking is purely coincidental. Although you can not beat a stonking bonking session !! I would also like to have this trip committed as soon as possible, as I would like to be able to purchase my airline tickets within the next two weeks to get the best fare. I just checked eaasySabre and was dissapointed to see that fares have gone up from <$500 to over $1700 since I checked for the first trip. I don't trust EaasySabre though, so I will be calling United and British Air direct and see what they have to say. Of course the high fare could be due to strange days that I selected (Like July 4th-Thursday, and July 16th-Tuesday). In any case, I am very excited about this trip--I've never been overseas before, and this gives me the perfect excuse--that and that I haven't had a vaction in over two years now... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Daniel James - Database Administrator djames @ statsci.com Data Analysis Prod Div of MathSoft (formerly StatSci) (206) 283-8802 x284 ------------------------------ Subject: Besides Covers From: Bruce_Conrad @ hchp.org Date: Wed, 8 May 1996 00:51:30 -0400 Smashie - give us more info, a.s.a.p. I have completely lost all respect for the man, (personally, not musically) and am ending my search for the Fait Accompli video. I don't need to see an insecure man make an ass out of himself!!! And while I am on the subject, I wish I never knew the background behind RITF. I am aware this is a sick and depraved world we live in, but I listen to music to escape all that. I listened to the song last night and it just wasn't the same...it never will be. I always thought of it as sweet and whimsical. I guess I'm just naive. This is my first time here, so be gentle! To add my two pence worth to the debate on "What Mark Said on the Live Version of The Sun Goes Down": I'm sure the feedback shriek was added in postproduction. I was at the Reading gig that was used on the Live Album (The Hexagon Theatre. No snooker that night!) and remember hearing it. My favourite changed lyric is in the same song: "Are you the one that put the tack into Shakatak?" Some boring backgound (as it's my first time). Been 'into' L42 since the very beginning. First L42 gig was about 1982 (Reading Top Rank Club), last was their last ever UK date (which I didn't know when I booked the tickets). Blimey, where was it? Dominion Theatre? Bum, I can't remember. Anyway, IMHO, they peaked musically at RITF. I still don't get so excited with 'Guaranteed'. I have a tape of MK discussing the RITF album with BBC Radio 1's Andy Peebles which makes fascinating listening. Also, 'My top 10', again with Andy Peebles, where MK picks his top 10 fave tracks. IMHO, and despite being the biggest Level 42 fan ever (well, in the road where I live anyway!), I think that SATS was probably the worst of all their albums. Okay, "Heaven in my hands" was an excellent single, and yes, "Man" was an okay track as well, but overall, by their own very high standards, I think that it was a poor album. Does anybody else share my view here? I mean, even Mark King, in an interview to The Sun newspaper (whose comments you cannot always trust), said it was a pile of cak, and not worth the vinyl it was pressed on (though I think I remember him denying this in the Fait Accompli video). Personnaly, I think that Level 42 were never quite as good after the Gould brothers had left, and with Staring at the Sun being the first release under a new lineup, I think that this goes part way to proving the point. However, "Guaranteed" and "Forever Now" were vast improvements. I await a flaming! I haven't had any luck finding it, so if anybody has an extra copy for sale... And you're right, of course, about the Gould influence on SATS - still doesn't change my mind. You see, I don't have anything against the Goulds. I really like Phil's playing. I just like Gary's playing at least as much and he plays on my favorite L42 albums (in my admittedly inadequate collection). I like SATS more than anything else I've heard so far. >Once again this is not a Flame, I'm not asking you to justify your >opinions to me, I'm just interested in your views on the points I've made. >(and anyone else's for that matter) Hey, don't worry about that, I'm extremely difficult to offend. Gary Husband couldn't iron Phil's underwear if >Phil was dead... Now why would anyone want to iron a dead man's underwear? You're beginning to worry me, but by liking Phil's playing you obviously have some redeeming qualities ;-) However, about drum sounds, If you check out the interviews with the various drum and music mags you'll see that Phil's sound was quite often, to his chagrin at times, canned. More often than Gary's, though that's not necessarily either one of their doing's-by-choice. I really like both of their sonic signatures, especially Phil's on World Machine, but I got to admit that I was a little disapointed when I found out that at least some of it was Linn. Many of us have no aversion to this, but I can understand his dismay with producers and engineers who had liked to take short cuts via drum machines and triggering. "Notes that lost in the shuffle" - that I *can* understand; Gary's playing is much busier than Phil's - I like that, but I realize that's a matter of personal choice. >Don't agree? Sorry. Phil was the glue that held the ship afloat while Mark >was getting his head together. Huh? What's that all about? After a couple of numbers, Mark yells, "San DIEEEEEEgggo! You look like you really know how to have a good time! And this isn't it!" 2) For LOZ or whomever it was who is coming stateside: Have a good trip, if you come to the Bay Area (SF-Oakland) let me know if you need some travel ideas. Basically, what I'm saying is that if you are going to bother to come to America, don't bother with Chicago or Cleveland or New York or any of that other Eastern stuff. Just come out West and do it right! ;) 3) Speaking of being judgemental, the world is too judgemental as it is, in my opinion. Mark's playing the hell out of the bass and singing soulfully and helping write amazing songs, so let's appreciate him for that. If he were dating my daughter*, I'd set him straight on his "attitude towards women" that some of us percieve as less than honorable. Otherwise, let him be. In one scene, Mark brings up the fact that his wife gave birth to an 8lb, 12oz baby girl "yesterday" (whenever yesterday was then) and I began to laugh. Because in real time, (today May 8th) that very thing happened to me. Yesterday, (May 7th) my wife gave birth to a baby boy!! And it was Mark's!! Just kidding. And he weighed...8lbs, 12oz!! No kidding! Funny how things like that happen. You see 42 all the time on the clock or hear a song from them on the radio at coincidental times, but this was quite funny. After watching the whole video, I was thinking about a comment from a digest member about how their respect for Mark had faded because of some gesture made to a female in one particular scene. I watched very closely for this gesture, I saw it and well...It was no big thing. I did not see any sexual overtone or undertone for that matter in his action. He seemed like he was just playing it up for the moment. Harmless fun. My respect for him as well as the others is greater in alot of respects. Mostly the fact that they are just normal "gits" as Mark puts it, and don't seem to fall into the "greater than thou" mind set that some great musicians can hone to perfection. But enough of my rambling. The only knock I have is that it wasn't long enough. That's right kids, IT'S A BOY!!! So now with a boy, two girls, my wife and I, that makes a Family of Five.
