Hansen ------------------------------ Subject: The Bends and stuff From: Mr Fish Date: Tue, 7 May 1996 12:21:56 +0100 (BST) Sorry Meridian people - they obviously decided not to repeat 'The Pier' this time - which is (and this is official) a bummer. Anyway... Simon Bone* was talking about the radio type chatter at the end of 'The Bends' - I'm glad they tried it rather than not - I feel that experementation is very important and little details added in here and there, be they musical or vocal can add subtle nuiances (spelling?) that may not seem to have an obviuous effect but can alter the may you percieve the music. It's just a shame the 'Right oh skip' stuff sounds so appalingly cack. Ho hum. David. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Imagine a 13 year old Park Barn Comprehensive school pupil walking down a corridor lined with third years all slapping his forehead saying 'spam'. ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Guarateed Live From: ee21sb @ ee.surrey.ac.uk (Simon J Bone) Date: Tue, 7 May 1996 12:32:58 +0100 (BST) Refering to Marc's mail on Guaranteed Live: From a personal standpoint I am not a fan of the post-Gould era (there seems to be a definate split in the digest there) and Gary Husband, despite being good at what he does, doesn't "do it" for me at all. Anyway this isn't a flame over a difference of opinion. What interested me was the line > then SATS blew me away. I agree SATS is a fine album but the Gould influence is there to see in the writing credits. So is it the Gould writing or playing you don't like? Also what's your opinion on FVN with Phil back in the writing and playing fold? (vastly superior to Guaranteed in my opinion) Once again this is not a Flame, I'm not asking you to justify your opinions to me, I'm just interested in your views on the points I've made. (and anyone elses for that matter) PS. regarding my posting on "The Bends" does anyone have any idea of what is being said during the "two-way radio" style background lyrics that I mentioned? ------------------------------ Subject: RITF again From: laurence green Date: Tue, 7 May 1996 13:09:32 PDT Hi All, Why arent I revising? Yes Pat I am aware of one other concert that is easily available on tape. That being a concert at Birmingham NEC about 2 days before the Wembley one, RITF original lyrics was also played here. I have a copy of the song from there. The lyrics were changed because the band felt that the lyrics were too much of an introspective view of Phils childhood and too deep to make a hit record, so they were re-written with a more general theme regarding Childhood. Joseph and Emily dont exist in real life, they were made up. Bye...................................LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: dont know yet From: laurence green Date: Tue, 7 May 1996 13:34:17 PDT Hi All, Well, here I am. and you may ask why Im not revising. Well, feel if I dont know it now I never will, also I am quite confident now. I feel I will do OK. I need 73% in each exam to boost my grade upto a first. Chances are Ill get higher in some (Maths) and lower in others (hydraulics). Anyway, I feel I should say that after several hundred listens to Boons album I now find it quite excellent. There are some truly essential songs on there especially 'Baby I Know' and 'Growing Wild In The Dessert'. Truly a great album. Secondly, I was thinking how interseting it will be for me to come to America, bearing in mind that Mark and Boon did the same thing when they were my age. I guess it will be a really great experience. I guess America is a big place. I have no idea where I will be flying to. Im going to try to get to Florida or Chicago. Is that wise is Im going to Ohio? I dont have much choice being as Im going to try and get a cancellation. Then Ill get one of those inland flights. My friend will pick me up from an airport near Lucasville, still I have no-idea where that is. While Im over there I intend to buy much Level 42 stuff, if I can find it! I get the feeling Im not talking about Level 42 enough. Talking about Marks rather embarrasing stage comments, try this was from the Crystal Palace Bowl in 1991 from the Chinese Way, "My Thighs wide open, I feel a breeze, My winkle reaches, down to my knees!" The worst thing was that Mike sang along with him. It has to be said though that Mark is a very funny guy on stage, off the top of my head, here are few lines, Crystal Palace bowl 1991, "your such a long way away, how do you know its us? How do we know its you?" same concert "Gary and I booked into a Hotel room a while ago, I said, "Room for King and Husband, please " and she gave us like the one key. And I had explain that was his name. You had to be there ladies and gentlemen you really did." same concert, "Were going to play all your favourites; both of them". Enschede 1992 "Hello to all the listerners from Radio Tross, lets hope your having a good time at home, and errr lets hope youve got a home". His jokes off stage can be just as bad. Anyway, that was just a bit of light relief. Dont expect Live At Wembley for another couple of weeks yet, the date doesnt keep getting put back, its just was never going to be released until about the 20th May. I must go now and do some revision. I am trying to find a heavyside equation that when plotted graphs the word Level 42. It could take me a lifetime of dedication, but as usual I am up for the task! Fingers crossed. See you soon....................LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: Digest Search Engine and IOW pt. II From: Daniel James Organization: Statistical Sciences Date: Tue, 07 May 1996 09:52:08 -0700 First of all to Eric... The search engine is very cool. Now I can stop saving each copy of the digest myself. I'm sure that my Sysadm will appreciate that. I like the way the names are listed with tags so that you can click and email... However, I think the digest headers should be tagged as well. I did a search on "White Funky" (Just for fun) and found a bunch of articles. However what is displayed is just a smigin of each digest. If the digest header was a link, then I could just click and pull up the entire file! Of course I could back up and then retreive the article from the previous page, but having a direct link would be much easier. [yup, I'm working on that!! -Eric] As for the return of the IOW pilgrimage... I suggest that the trip be planned for the first or second weekend of July. The reason for this? Well, because I really want to be able to go. I have flight school until the 3rd of July, and I'm going to San Francisco for a Database class between July 20th-28th, and my brother's wedding is the following Weekend. Needless to say--if I am going to be able to go (and spend more than two days in the UK), it will have to be either of these weekends, or sometime into August. If either of these weekends will work into other's schedules, then perhaps we should start moving towards planning this trip. That will give us about two months--plenty of time to find cheap airfare. Anyone else up for this trip? -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Daniel James - Database Administrator djames @ statsci.com Data Analysis Prod Div of MathSoft (formerly StatSci) (206) 283-8802 x284 ------------------------------ Subject: B-Sides: What to do - Redux From: JVenzon @ aol.com Date: Tue, 7 May 1996 12:54:43 -0400 >> I'll tell you what. Maybe someone associated with this project could post >and explain how those of us not already in whatever list you have to be on >to get a copy can get a copy? Lazlo, welcome to the club of two.... ;) Here is all you need to do to get one of the Level 42 B-Sides discs. Send me an email to: jvenzon @ aol.com or jvenzon @ primenet.com With this in the subject line: **I want a disc** I have my email program set to filter lines with ** at the head so I get them right away. In the email please include your name (full name please) and what part of the world you call home. To get a disc you can do one of three things: 1) Send me $20 and I will buy a Blank disc, a mailer and ship it to you 2) Send me a blank disc with prepaid return addressed padded mailer 3) Send an email to Matthew about having him buy you a blank, a mailer and the like cheaper than $20. We are up to 85 requests at the moment, so it might take a bit to get you a disc, but don't fear! We are going to try and make sure that everyone gets one. Below is the posting explaining how Matthew is working this: ------------------ There seems to be some confusion surrounding the B-Side disc and how Matthew fits into all of this. Here is the info on what's up: There are three batches of discs being burned for the total 85 of us who have requested discs. I am buring Batch number 1 (44 discs/people) and two other wonderful Level 42 fans are burning Batches 2 and 3. If I am not buring your disc (you would have gotten an email from me saying that I was doing yours and where to send your blank/$$) then I have passed your name onto one of the other two people making your disc. They will/should be/have already sent you an email saying that they are doing your disc and where to send the blank or $$ to. If you have not heard from them in one weeks time (by May 10th) email me at jvenzon @ primenet.com and I will get in touch with them. Please keep in mind that they are doing us (me too!) a big favor, and of course they have lives. If everyone is patient, we will all get discs, it just might take some time. As for Matthew's involvement, he has stepped in to help lower the cost of doing these discs. Since no one is charging for the discs (all money, if taken, is spent on the cost of shipping and the blank disc: THIS IS NON-PROFIT!!) The best way to drive costs down is to find a source for cheaper discs. This is where Matthew comes in. You tell him how many blanks you need (up to 3, as we are making 3 discs). You send him the money, he then buys the blank CD in bulk (cheaper than I get get them here in LA), the padded mailer, writes up your address and sends the package to whomever is burning the disc. That person makes the disc, then drops it into the mail, and then you get in and listen to it over and over and over and...... ------------------- I am going out of town for a couple of days to supervise the Oklahoma City premier of 'Twister' so I won't return email until this weekend. Also GO SEE TWISTER!! It's a very cool movie, and you can see a fellow Level 42 fan's name in the credits (look for assistant editor) I hope this clears things up. From: "Anthony Burns" Date: Tue, 7 May 96 19:31:10 UT There was a "concert" series on CBS in the States in '86~'87 time frame where bands would come on Fridays and make a stab at being spontaneous. Believe it or not, Level 42 was on, but for the life of me, I cannot remember the name of the damn show! Anyone who remembers this broadcast (and/or seeing Phil make the quickest exit in TV history...), please email me. Even better, anyone who has a copy of that episode would be worshipped as a God among men and women... Two shillings worth... Gary Husband couldn't iron Phil's underwear if Phil was dead... Cymbal playing like hitting a empty box of Cheerios, snare drum with old socks in it, notes that get lost in the shuffle... Sorry, but Phil is the epitome of "professional" drummer... Don't agree? Sorry. Phil was the glue that held the ship afloat while Mark was getting his head together. Quick notice... Look for "The Sleepwalkers" Web Site coming in June!!! Hansen" Date: Wed, 8 May 1996 01:30:29 -0400 (EDT) Just poking through Lazlo's discography, and it states that Andy Sojka pressed just *6* copies of the first pre-Polydor Level 42 album called "Strategy". Now, I'm familiar with this whole story, but I can't believe that he only pressed SIX records! Actually, I can believe it, but where the heck do you find someone willing to press just six records?! John, maybe we should contact these guys -- it might be cheaper than pressing that already-infamous CD!! -Eric -- Eric J.
