Hansen" Date: Tue, 7 May 1996 01:05:41 -0400 (EDT) Peoples, I've just set up a WWW-base search/retrieve/browse engine for all existing Level 42 Digest archives. Note that I said *ALL*, which currently includes over 680 digests (6.5Mb of text) dating back to August 1993. Anyways, surf to the Digest's web page to try it out! http://www.worldmachine.com/level42 You should move down the page to the "Archive Search/Retrieve/Browse" section. Note that I will be adding new features and improving the "look and feel" of the forms over the next few weeks. In particular, I'll be adding the capability to link directly to a digest from a set of search retrievals (when you see the search results, you'll know what I mean). I would appreciate any feedback that you see fit -- comments on usability, speed, look/presentation (how does it look on YOUR browser?), etc... you may email these comments to me personally, or if they are of general interest, post them to the list. Thanks and have fun!!! -Eric Level 42 Digest List Admin -- Eric J. Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Original RITF lyrics redux From: pfpd @ pobox.com (Pat Flanagan) Date: Mon, 6 May 1996 11:46:54 -0400 (EDT) >Hey, I really liked some of those lyrics Pat transcribed. Where'd they come >from again? Those are the original lyrics to RITF, taped from the Wembley concerts that produced the Live At Wembley video. If you notice on the video, when Lessons In Love starts, there's a particularly obvious edit. My guess is that they rewrote the lyrics, and the video producers decided (and rightly so), "well, then, we can't have that version on the tape," so they edited it out and slapped the video on the rear (of the tape, that is). If anyone knows if other recordings of these lyrics exist, please let me know. Keep in mind that the only live show I witnessed was with the Goulds, and that I respect their talents immensely (thanks, Pat, for the RITF insight). But Guaranteed was my favorite, then SATS blew me away, and I've at least had a listen to the older material thru the live Gould/post-Gould renditions. Gary Husband kicks arse, no two ways about it. I thought Jules (Hi Jules ;) ) had me convinced that Jakko was a pompous azz, but after seeing this video I must disagree. I think his stage presence was not nearly as obnoxious as Mike's (uh oh. now i've done it... ) and his playing is arguably more technical than Murphy's. I still like Murphy better, and I think Jakko suffers from Holdsworth's Syndrome (and don't you dare flame me, AH fans; Holdsworth is THE MAN) but he played for the team, plus he added to the vocal harmonies which I think was the standout of this concert, besides the sound quality. Maybe the B-sides will spin me around 180 degrees, we shall see. Hey Smashie, when you gel your plans for Boston, let me know, I'm only an hour away (Worcester) and would be glad to help get you incarcerated, or at the very least, inebriated! -Marc ------------------------------ Subject: TFF/Kevin Gilbert From: Marc_Dupuis @ MADISONUSA.CCMAIL.CompuServe.COM Date: 06 May 96 14:37:16 EDT Nick D'Virgilio (drummer for Tears for Fears '96 tour) has a brother, Mike, who has been a member of the TFF digest for the past couple of months. He is currently sans internet, but before he left he made plans to meet up with me to meet in Boston for brew and babbling. If anybody is a Toy Matinee, Kevin Gilbert, or Nick D'Virgilio fan and would like to get some info/insight from this vantage point please email me. Interesting stuff all around. I've found this to be somewhat abnoxious and irritating. My respect for Mark is not what it used to be. Particularly annoying is the scene in Fait Accompli after they finished with shooting the "Yellow Ribbon" video--when he makes demeaning and somewhat sexual gestures towards one of the women outside. Very tacky... No wonder his marriage failed (if he holds women in such low regard). > I have most of their US releases - excluding 'The Early Tapes' and any > singles. I saw it for $24.00 and I seemed to already have about > 90% of the songs on there...Would it be worth it? You should really try and get ahold of The Early Tapes--it's one of the best. I have the Remixes, and while I don't listen to it very often, it does have some nice mixes. Most of the older mixes are very similar to the album versions with a bit of instrumental/bass jammin' stuff thrown in near the end. > A couple of years ago I found a Level 42 Video tape made sometime after > SATS but before Level Best or Guaranteed. If anyone's interested I can > make copies... Sounds like Fait Accompli... I think that this is hard to find anymore, but when it came out it was very common (at least where I was). As for Bernard Edwards... I think he was credited with Powerstation as well was he not? Black gentleman--very talented bass player if I remember correctly. I'm sorry to hear of his passing. However, I agree that hearing this group of people together would be a scary (and fascinating) experience. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Daniel James - Database Administrator djames @ statsci.com Data Analysis Prod Div of MathSoft (formerly StatSci) (206) 283-8802 x284 ------------------------------ Subject: just general chat From: "Lazlo Nibble" Date: Mon, 6 May 1996 14:56:04 -0600 (MDT) > I'll tell you what. Jeff T. from NYC ------------------------------ Subject: Mark's Alembic Basses From: "Steen, Rob" Date: Tue, 07 May 96 09:45:35 gmt Hi Guys, Remember me, I haven't been sending any mails as my mail address is a floating thing at the moment and I've been keeping up with news on the archives (thanks Eric). I'm back in Ireland and back at work and looking for a band. The recent questions on Alembics interests me again. Mark's Alembics are medium scale (32inch) Series II Alembics. They are great basses, I know I have one (with a long scale neck), they are hideously expensive new, I got one third hand and it still cost a fortune but I knew I'd cry in my sleep for years if I didn't get it. The controls drove me insane for a while but I got the hang of them eventually, they have nine controls on the front that's almost more then an old Star Trek set! There is also a Mark King signature bass which comes in two models (standard and delux) these have different electronics and a five piece neck and a few other interesting features, they are based on Mark's basses. I don't have exact prices for them at hand but they aren't too cheap. Alembic is a great company they'll practically make any bass for you, I have a friend who is impatiently waiting for a bass with coco-bolo wood and seven piece neck and a few nice features (side neck LEDS etc. etc.), it should be ready soon. Anyway, work calls.
