All the songs are well written, the musicians used are of the top quality (Manu Katche on drums .. superb, Pino Palladino on bass and Dominic Miller on guitar .. outstanding). My favourite tracks are 'Life Will Never Be The Same' and 'The Spirit Is Free'. Incidently, we know MK is working on a solo album and tour .. any news from the Mike Lindup camp regarding solo work/tours etc??? Paul. ------------------------------ Subject: Remixes. . . From: WJGreer @ aol.com Date: Sun, 5 May 1996 12:57:54 -0400 > Does anyone out there >have 'The Remixes'? I saw it for $24.00 and I seemed to already have about >90% of the songs on there...Would it be worth it? You know, I don't have The Remixes, but I do have a few CDs with remixes on them (RITF Platinum, etc.). I must say that I don't like the Level 42 remixes in general. It always seems clear that the band themselves didn't have anything to do with them - just Shep Pettibone or some other producer. The remixes just don't seem to cover any additional musical ground beyond the original tracks. Plus, the sound of a big gorrilla saying "Running in the Family" kind of sounds, well, a little stupid to me. I like the live cuts a lot better. Hey Loz, I got my book - you are, truly, a gentleman and scholar. Thanks. -Will ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Original version of RITF From: Smashie Date: Sun, 05 May 1996 16:45:01 -0700 Pat! You are a God! Many years ago (when I was a bright young fifteen year old) I met up with Phil Gould and although I don't think he'd think the same about me, he was absolutely fascinating. And one of the things he said was that Running In The Family was all about incest! And I couldn't work out how the majority of the album lyrics made sense in the light of me knowing that (and I always wanted to understand the lyrics to RITF). So although I can't fill in the blanks, it's one hell of a revelation seeing the original lyrics that make much more sense. No wonder Crockford didn't like it when it was first delivered huh?! Oh by the way, I'm in Boston the third week of June and New York on the fourth... so anybody willing to either show me round or have a trans-Atlantic-mini-Level-fest, do send me a mail! Otherwise I'll be just a little Londoner lost. After seeing that the discussion had turned to basses, I HAD to join in. Yes, Mark has been using the Status, JD, and Alembic basses. . . But I feel that, taken in perspective, Carvin (of southern California) makes just about the best bass available at any price (and I've played quite a few high dollar instruments!). If anyone's interested in getting a Carvin catalogue, just drop me a line. Matthew Blackmon ------------------------------ Subject: passing news and MM tour From: "Jay Tracy" Date: Mon, 6 May 1996 01:35:12 -0400 (EDT) Wow, I just heard that Bernard Edwards past away, remember him from Chic ? The only reason I mention this is because Mark King dropped his name a few times in interviews... Here's the small mention it got in Entertainment Weekly: Bassist Bernard Edwards, 43, a founding member of the pop group Chic, of unknow causes, April 18, at a Tokyo hotel. According to his spokesman, Edwards had been performing in a concert with Steve Winwood, Slash, and Simon LeBon, but "during the show, he didn't feel well. He went back to his hotel room to sleep and didn't wake up." Chic was responsible for such classic disco songs as "Dance, Dance, Dance" and "Le Freak". Also for you over-sea'rs I have a list of Marcus Miller's tour dates through Europe and some, if you want 'em let me know. Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww freak out !!!! --jay, whose hoping he *never* has to hear what the music of Winwood/Slash/LeBon sounded like...
