Funneegurl ------------------------------ Subject: schtuppin' 'til the sun goes down From: John Edward Martin Shuford Date: Fri, 3 May 1996 03:37:00 -0700 (PDT) You know, Mark has found more inventive ways of screwing up their songs over the years, hasn't he? After reading the question whether MK is singing "I'm gonna f*ck her 'til the sun goes down" I had to pull out Physical Presence and pop it in. Well, on my CD whatever word goes in that spot has been dropped out and there is either horn, keyboard, or whistle sound there. But it does seem to come out with a kind of hard "ck" sound at the end. Nice. Good ear to the gentleman who caught it. My other personal faves are: 1) "runnin' and comin' in the back seat" on Running in the Family from Guaranteed Live 2) "go down mama" on The Sun Goes Down from either Guaranteed Live or the My Father's Shoes CD single 3) "if you won't show your tits to me, set me free" on Love Games from The White Funky Hmmm...maybe all that "Level 42 Through the Backdoor" stuff was more appropriate than I thought! D'ya ever get the feeling Mike cringed a bit when he heard Mark do that stuff. I can just hear Mike saying to himself "Mark, you're not singing it right again! I hate it when you do that!" Thanks for the help on the Wembley Arena/Wembley Stadium numbers. I was pretty sure on the Stadium seating 72,000, but I really wasn't sure on the Arena. I knew the 100,000 and 20,000 that were quoted by someone else couldn't be quite right (though I suppose you could have about 20,000 standing on the infield at the Stadium to take the capacity out to around 100,000). As for my comments on venue size = "caliber" I didn't mean to suggest that filling Wembley Arena for 8 straight shows was minor feat (no one flamed me on this, I just wanted to refine my statement). But there's obviously a huge difference in 72,000 over 8 nights versus 576,000 over 8 nights. I don't know if any band could draw quite that much (leaving the Paul Simon Central Park concert sort of thing aside). By the way, how many people does the Birmingham NEC seat? My guess is about 22,000. Slappin' and Ticklin' Mr Pink while Porky Rides Mother Again (see, you don't have to be Mark to screw up a title. hey, what a great name for the remixes CD!!!) I imagine this was not the only time he sang that. > From what I've heard, the Live at Wembley album has been delayed > again, ( source Croydon HMV ) until May 6th ( 7th probably cos 6th is > UK bank holiday ) Damn! > 3. Now we'll never know. It would have been a strange combination of bands but it already was (George Michael, Lisa Stansfield, Annie Lennox << >> Extreme, Metallica, stuff like that). I may be wrong but I seem to recall a review of alembic basses in TGM a while back. The Alembic "Mark King" was (brace) stlg7000, or with lights stlg8000. Indeed he does say the aforementioned four letter word but one thing I have always noticed is the convenient little whistle of feedback as he says it. Listen to it and you'll see what I mean. What I have always wanted to know is if the feedback simply is coincidently right at that moment (which it does sound like) or was it added in post production (highly unlikely but you never know). What is everyone's opinion on this? On the subject of Mark's lyrical interpretations, I don't have a problem with him using the work "fuck" during live performances but sometimes he does push my tolerance just a little. Who else remembers the Guaranteed Live broadcast on Radio 1 a few years ago when during "The Chinese Way" (a song I happen to like, unlike some people on the digest) he replaced the line "Words softly spoken in Cantonese" with..... wait for it.... "My Winkle stretches down to my knees!" Oh my God, how bloody sad! I have to admit that Mark does have a habit of singing his own "funny" interpretations of lines but sometimes it just doesn't work. Also, on the subject of FVN. Has anybody noticed the intensly iritating background murmerings towards the end of "The Bends"? I would describe them as what sounds like Mark & Mike pretending to talk to each other over a two-way radio. If you don't know what I'm talking about it sounds like:- "Excuse me lord" "righto skip" intermixed with pretend bursts of static and some other unintelligable rubbish. Speaking for myself I think this adds nothing to the song at all and is just a pain in the arse in what is otherwise an excellent track. Does anyone agree/disagree and (this might sound strange considering what I've just said) does anybody have any idea exactly what they are saying? [I kind of like it... reminiscent of some of Thomas Dolby's gimmicks from his first two albums... -Eric] I think I've said enough to be going on with apart from a quick message to Mr Fish:- Hope your Y-fronts cleaned up nicely and Shane Ritchie doesn't do as good a job on TV as you used to do. ------------------------------ Subject: Bassics... From: R.Meacham @ sheffield.ac.uk (Richard Meacham) Date: Fri, 3 May 96 11:39:10 BST The real mac toy asked which basses MK uses these days. The ones which excite methe most are his custom Alembics - particularly the dark cocobolo-faced one. This is the one with the LED fret markers which glow in the dark - but this is just decoration of course. If it plays like the ones which I have tried then it is a real joy to play... I don't think he uses JD anymore, I've never seen him use JD since he got Alembic. He played Status Matrix 5str for "If you're mine" in Guaranteed Live Video. This Status had LED fretboad marker, something I've never seen in Status. Didn't he used Musicman 4 and 5str bass for Guaranteed? I remember reading about it in Bass Player magazine... Here is the info on what's up: There are three batches of discs being burned for the total 85 of us who have requested discs. I am buring Batch number 1 (44 discs/people) and two other wonderful Level 42 fans are burning Batches 2 and 3. If I am not buring your disc (you would have gotten an email from me saying that I was doing yours and where to send your blank/$$) then I have passed your name onto one of the other two people making your disc. They will/should be/have already sent you an email saying that they are doing your disc and where to send the blank or $$ to. If you have not heard from them in one weeks time (by May 10th) email me at jvenzon @ primenet.com and I will get in touch with them. Please keep in mind that they are doing us (me too!) a big favor, and of course they have lives. If everyone is patient, we will all get discs, it just might take some time. As for Matthew's involvement, he has stepped in to help lower the cost of doing these discs. Since no one is charging for the discs (all money, if taken, is spent on the cost of shipping and the blank disc: THIS IS NON-PROFIT!!) The best way to drive costs down is to find a source for cheaper discs. This is where Matthew comes in. You tell him how many blanks you need (up to 3, as we are making 3 discs). You send him the money, he then buys the blank CD in bulk (cheaper than I get get them here in LA), the padded mailer, writes up your address and sends the package to whomever is burning the disc. That person makes the disc, then drops it into the mail, and then you get in and listen to it over and over and over and...... I am about 1-2 weeks away from starting to burn discs. I am expecting the EQ'ed master back in the mail today (Friday the 3rd) and if I get some time off this weekend, I will prepare the master, and then... dum...dum..dum...dummmmm.....duuuuummmmmmm..... I will start buring discs and sending them off to you lovely people! According to an interview with Mark, the group decided to scrap these lyrics because they were to personal and autobiographical with regards to Phil (note for all the "why did the Goulds leave" theorists: Mark says that Phil was included in those who wanted to change the lyrics). The tape isn't the clearest, and Mark occasionally does his patented mush-mouthed delivery, so certain parts are unintelligible. If anyone can fill in the parts marked (ba-ba-ba etc.), please do. It was probably wise of them, IMHO, to change the lyrics, as some of the rhymes are rather awkward. (BTW, "hi-story" is pronounced with a short "i" sound, for you sing-a-long-ers.) Here we go. Sorry for the length of this post, but I thought it was interesting enough to warrant it. Verse 1 I've got a scientific mind (ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba) I always make the right connections My dad ain't like the other guys, he Won the Nobel Prize For hi-story He wrote the book (ba-ba-ba-ba) He made a quantum leap And pushed me in the same direction I read (ba-ba-ba-ba) instead Like he knew I would The first time he set eyes on me Chorus 1 Looking back it's so bizarre, It's always a myst'ry All the things we are On the backseat of the car With Joseph and Emily We only see so far And we all have our daddy's eyes Looking back it's so bizarre Verse 2 Each night, I'm lying in my bed I'd watch it in my head I always played the starring role There's me with my daddy, perfect years But it ends in tears When I leave home Each day, I'd climb the learning curve I'd never lose my nerve 'Til (ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba) It's strange, but the mother of my child Wore my mother's smile The first time she set eyes on me Chorus 2 Looking back it's so bizarre, It's always a myst'ry All the things we are On the backseat of the car With Joseph and Emily We only see so far And we all have our daddy's eyes Looking back it's so bizarre It runs in the family All the things we are Looking back it's so bizarre Bridge (No lyrics in this version i.e. "Like a drummer plays his drum...") Hey hey, we keep on running in the family Hey hey, we keep on coming in the family (repeat twice) Chorus 3 Looking back it's so bizarre, It's always a myst'ry All the things we are On the backseat of the car With Joseph and Emily We only see so far And we all have our daddy's eyes Looking back it's so bizarre It runs in the family All the things we are Looking back it's so bizarre, It's always a myst'ry All the things we are On the backseat of the car With Joseph and Emily We only see so far And we all have our daddy's eyes Looking back it's so bizarre, Running in the family, It's running in my family, Running in the family, etc. Pat Flanagan Publishing & Design PO Box 281, Granger, IN 46530-0281 email: pfpd @ pobox.com website: http://www.pobox.com/~pfpd TOTALMEDIA PUBLISHING: Print * Disk * Interactive * CDROM * Internet ------------------------------ Subject: I "love" being a U.S. levelhead...........
