I guess it's all in the image. Sorry to continue on an off-topic thread that I started, but, unfortunately, image IS important, at least in the American music market. That may be another thing that hurt Level 42. They tried; I mean, look at the photo of them in the World Machine album. Nice clothes, eh? >(Bad Lyric - "I'm brave...but I'm chickensh*t" - "Hand in Pocket" - Alanis >Morrisette) Sorry, Greg, you've picked another song that I've already used. As I am the originator of the Bad Song Lyric of the Day, as well as the undisputed all-around Ruler of the Universe, I have to ask you to try harder. >btw, some digests ago LOZ mentioned that it were the yanks who turned your >marathon-bar into snickers. >who is responsible then for our raider turned into twix??? Hey, everything has a proper name. Some things just take some time to have their proper name assigned to them. :D >1. Anybody ever use the News Group: alt.music.level-42 ? Never seen it, I'll have to check it out. >Second, and perhaps the best way for us to show our support >of Level 42 is to order through Voiceprint directly. I agree. >the life of me, I can't place where I've heard that quiet riff that he >starts playing at about 12 minutes into the song...its driving me nuts! Watch the Live at Wembley tape and listen to Physical Presence. In his subtle intros to his solos, he tends to stick in some snippets from Influences. >Now, Boon's album: what the hell was that!... The lyrics sucked hard Haw Haw! I haven't heard the album but I've read some of the lyrics. Is this the same guy who wrote the words to Seven Days, Take A Look, etc.? Or did he just forget how to write? >Bad Lyric " Boom Boom akalacka Boom" Was Not Was See, now that's one I haven't used yet. Cheers! (But it was still a great song from a truly underappreciated, truly bitchin' group!) >Of couse, the majority of you probably also realized this and >todays digest will be a tribute to just how stupid I am. Oh, Rolf, we wouldn't do that. Twit. :D >Are there many versions of the Early Tapes, US/UK? Or just one? Just one, so far as I know. >Does anyone know the difference between Running in the Family and >Running....Platinum Edition? Extra remix tracks. If you have the "Family Edition" remix album, I believe you have the same tracks (someone correct me if I'm wrong). >Does anyone know what is different about the Japanese version of Pursuit of >Accidents? Audiophile Imports says it has one extra track or something. I know the CD version I have of Pursuit has remixes of You Can't Blame Louis and Chinese Twee (I know, I know, a lot of people like that song -- sorry) tacked onto the end. Maybe that's it. >Does anyone know what the second to last song on Mike's Changes CD on >Resurgence is? The CD booklet or cover doesn't say anything about it. It's >an instrumental. It's called Jung. >"Also Available in Green." I don't know, but I could swear I've heard about it, but I don't remember where, what, or when. But I'd love to hear about it again! >But in a way if they had ever become REALLY popular it might not have been so >much fun - anyone agree? Ah... I'd rather have seen them become REALLY popular, myself. Then they might have been treated properly by their record label (they might not have had to change labels at all), and they might still be around. Ok, I'm done babbling. TCOY, Pat {Official Bad Song Lyric of the Day: "She blew your money on taking that cruise, well if that isn't funny then watch out teacher... for this production, they gather a gun, ain't no direction, so, watch out actors!" from "Meet El Presidente" by Duran Duran} Cool song, otherwise. I've tried CDNow, but I was wondering if Tower Records or Audiophile had web sites. Because I don't have access to Audiophile and the nearest Tower is too far, I'd like to do it all on the net; Or, if somebody could provide phone numbers, that would work, too. Thanks a ton, Zak ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V96 #11 From: ZNilsson @ handel.jlc.net (Zak Nilsson) Date: Fri, 12 Jan 1996 09:06:05 -0500 >>I'm 24 and a musician (keys, drums) and my influences (besides the obvious) >>have been Thomas Dolby, The Fixx, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads, Spyro Gyra, >>Herbie Hancock and a few other eccentric types. :) > >Nice group, Zak. Who are the eccentric types? (We're an eccentric bunch.) Uh, well, there's Howard Jones, Martin Medeski & Wood (but not all the time), Bela Fleck, Phish, and, say, Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine. I just ordered "Aliens Ate My Buick" (Thomas Dolby) on CD because I have the tape currently and it's worn out. Along with Level 42, he's one of my top three favorite artists/groups for life. I'm hoping the company I work for will, so I can transfer 12" versions and b-sides to CD. It's a bit expensive for me to buy one home. I'm all for stickers and t-shirts, what happened to the t-shirts anyway? Loz, any dates for the new albums ?? Do I....knnnooow you? Just kidding. Danke for the advice. My Deutsch comes from high school and some college. I'm a bit rusty though, not to mention a dummkopf. >And for the life of me, I can't place where I've heard that quiet >riff that he starts playing at about 12 minutes into the song... >its driving me nuts! Mark integrates this riff along with the one from "Dune Tune" into his bass solo at the beginning of "Love Games" on the A Physical Presence Album. >(I think the Gresham Blues instrumental was a bonus cd track >added to ... ??True Colors??) I have "Gresham Blues" on my Staring At The Sun cassette. I'm not sure about the True Colours CD though. More about Instrumentals. I think Tears For Fears could have written some awesome Instrumentals. In fact, portions of the album Songs From The Big Chair could be considered instrumental. More recently, Rush has included one instrumental on each of their last two albums. Plus come to think of it, Peter Gabriel's album Secret World Live is very Instrumental and (I'm on a roll now) Duran Duran did a few also although I don't know about recently and Paul Mccartney has done at least 10 since his Beatle days. Any other "non-instrumental" artist doing instrumentals? Forever Now, as some have said (I don't have it yet), was the "boys" attempt at getting back to their earlier sound. Too bad they didn't get completely there by adding a inst. for good measure. Tschuess, Rolf ------------------------------ Subject: Mark's quiet riff in the Essential From: LittleHalo @ aol.com Date: Sat, 13 Jan 1996 01:03:43 -0500 For J.S. Lohr who can't place Mark's "Dune Tune"-esque quiet riff about 12 minutes into "The Essential," I believe you can also find it in his pre-"Love Games" bass solo on 'A Physical Presence.' Just wanted to put J.S. Lohr (and anyone else who was stumped) at ease. Yours in listening to "Paixao," (Fallen) Angel
