From: "M.D. Robins" Organization: the University of Greenwich Date: Thu, 25 Apr 1996 11:55:59 GMT Morning all, First of all, Pat, if you're reading this, I'm really sorry but the screensaver disk you sent me didn't work again! It was the same problem, which is beginning to make me suspect it's a problem with my computer. I've lost you're address ( for a change ) so can you mail me with your comments/solutions. Sorry. Secondly, that digest covers tape mentioned yesterday sounds a damn good idea. I've been a drummer for six years, but only ask me if there's no-one else who'll do it! Asking me to recreate Phil's feel would be like asking RCA to promote Forever Now. ( Actually, that's not strictly true, RCA COULD do it if they wanted to ) Also, and finally, Daniel, I lost your address as well, ( I'm good at losing things ) so could you mail me back with that web page with the photo ( as in THE photo ) on it. Cheers. Here are a few highlights: 1. We visited Mark's house and chatted to a friendly neighbour whilst maintaining a respectful distance. 2. Matt proudly displayed his Level 42 tattoo to all and sundry. 3. Jon located a record shop on the island selling albums signed by Mark and selflessly tipped us off as to its whereabouts. 4. Richard and I immediatly bought said albums with Matt, who was too skint to buy any himself, in tow - though he couldn't buy them himself he came along to "watch" us. 5. We all had an excellent curry, mine consisting almost exclusively of small, green HOT chillies and Matt's consisting almost exclusively of naans. 6. We hung out mostly at Joe Daflo's which seemed to be one of the 'swingingest' joints in Ryde. The bar meals were good and the coffee excellent. We bullied the barstaff into playing selected L42 tracks, mostly from the 'Turn It On' CD, which is a bargain at just 5.99. Here are some suggested names for the digest's B side CD: 1. 'Rule of Thumb' 2. 'Beezer 1' (or some derivation of it, emphasising the 'B' - as in B sides) 3. 'Pat Flanagan is a puff, he called Loz's pint ugly and I can have him in a fight'...that isn't a suggestion for a CD title but I thought I'd throw it in there to start an argument and liven things up. I have a fairly good cover of Hot Water I did with the band I was in back in 1989 in Austin (I'm a bass player if everyone didn't know that). It's interesting, because the singer in the band was Rick Trevino, who is now a county music singer of substantial repute. Actually, we have Mr. Pink and Fashion Fever on that tape as well. Hell, I'll copy the whole tape if anyone wants to hear. And I'm sure we'll go through all the legal debate about this idea too. Actually Pet Shop Boys left EMI-US earlier this year because the label was refusing to promote them to their satisfaction. They're still working with EMI in the UK but their stateside releases are now being distributed by Atlantic. (Well, will be anyway -- I don't believe Atlantic have bothered to announce a release date for PSB's new single yet.) I'm of mixed feelings about Mark signing with ZTT; the label has lost of lot of its spirit over the last ten years, and he'd have a hard time getting US distribution. -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo @ swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) ::: Selling Fax/techno/synthpop CDs - email with subject GET AUCTION for list ------------------------------ Subject: Leaving Me Now From: WJGreer @ aol.com Date: Thu, 25 Apr 1996 11:40:14 -0400 >has anyone noticed on the song "Leaving Me Now" (World Machine) >in the left speaker I think its Mark slapping an unamplified bass into a >microphone, and sending that through some kind of flanger. From: ee21sb @ ee.surrey.ac.uk (Simon J Bone) Date: Thu, 25 Apr 1996 16:51:56 +0100 (BST) Hello, the digest hasn't had the pleasure of my input for quite some time now but I thought I just HAD to remind LOZ of a little spelling pisstake. The Isle of WIGHT is spelt -W-I-G-H-T- NOT Isle of WHITE. I felt obliged to point this out as our friends from across the pond may be a bit confused (well maybe not, I just felt obliged to point this out). Now that's cleared up I'd just like to say that I'm up for pilgrimage mark 2. My brother dragged himself along to the first one and I think I missed out. PS. Howard Jones was discussed earlier. Did anyone mention the impending show at The Bottom Line in NYC? It's a terrific little place to see this '80s icon as he hacks his way back into the pop music limelight slowly but surely. There are two shows on May 15 at 7:30 and 10 and tickets are $17.50, available at the box office or through check/money order by calling 212/228-6300. Doors open at 6pm for the first show. The Bottom Line is located at 15 West 4th (corner of Mercer). Take the N/R train to 8th st. and walk south, turning right on 4th. If you like or have liked Howard Jones, come out and support him. You'll be pleasantly suprised. ---Jeff T. ------------------------------ Subject: Play me From: Bruce_Conrad @ hchp.org Date: Thu, 25 Apr 1996 00:18:05 -0400 I'd love to contribute to a L42 covers cassette. In > reading The Definitive Biography, they talk about how they were bringing > Crockford on board in part to provide them with a more professional, > "flashy" show. Would this attribute to this increased maturity from show > to show, or is it simply because the guys got older and more relaxed? This is also *very* apparent on the version of 88 (Live) on the B-Side of the Chinese Way UK Mix 12". I noticed that it sounded much less mature than the Physical Presence version--very, very, *VERY* fast and raw. I like it! > here is what I propose. a Tape with a collection of Level 42 covers done by > musicians on the list! i know that i suck and would in no way ever be able > to come up with a song (my air bass is just great though... :) ), but i am > sure that with all the musicians on the list we could come up with some > pretty hoppin and phat tunes! I think this sounds like an interesting idea. I think the people on this list would probably do better covers than anyone else. That is, staying true to the grove (or something like that). > Here are some of our cool/lame ideas: I like both "Turn It Over" (very clever!!!), and "As Years Go By: 15 years of Level 42 B-sides" > FOR EXAMPLE - has anyone noticed on the song "Leaving Me Now" (World Machine) > in the left speaker I think its Mark slapping an unamplified bass into a > microphone, and sending that through some kind of flanger. Weird! Anyone else > have an opinion on this? If it's the same thing that I'm thinking of, then it's in the right channel on my stereo (perhaps you should check the wiring job on your new Stereo!). I always thought it was some of Mike's wonderful, complex textures that he always adds to their music. Mike's abilities aren't always so obvious, but I think he is nonetheless, a musical genious. Most people would agree that Level 42 wouldn't be Level 42 without Mark's bass playing, but I also feel this way about Mike's keyboard playing. The subtle layering textures that he adds to the music is amazing. In this respect, I was a little disapointed with his solo album. The music just isn't nearly as complex (with a few exceptions) and his playing isn't nearly as good (again, with exceptions). Don't get me wrong, I still love his album (especially Changes, West Coast Man, and Life Will Never Be the Same), just that I think he wrote and played beneath his abilities. I'm rambling... The point of this is that much of the complexities that you speak of are (IMHO) due to Mike's contributions to the band. [don't forget that alot of the synthesizer wisdom in Level 42 was contributed by Wally Badarou... this may explain why you don't hear it on Mike's solo album! -Eric] Speaking of these little hidden things, Listen to "Dream Crazy" with headphones and just as it fades out, you'll hear Mark whisper the word "Dream". There are plenty of other little things like this to discover. It is for me, one of the reasons that I never get tired of listening to their albums over and over and over and over and over and over again.
