But I can't think which track from Early Years would lend itself to this chant ! From: Marc_Dupuis @ MADISONUSA.CCMAIL.CompuServe.COM Date: 24 Apr 96 10:53:00 EDT Hey Jules. OUCH! That was an undisguised backhand followed up with a jump spinning sidekick! "Nothing personal", huh? Could've fooled me. Damn fun, though, isn't it? Hey LOZ, here's the "arguments" you asked for ;-) You're absolutely right Jules, I need the old stuff. Problem is I haven't been able to find it. Still looking though, I think I'm going to take a stab at HMV in Cambridge MA (thanks Eric!). And JV's disc should help, I imagine. I'll certainly revisit the topic when I am able. Now for some sparring: "Doo Pee?" Good God, man, you had to start off with that? Damn your eyes! By the way, the Latin derivation of Jules Arnold is "Arnolds family Jewels." Do I have a "soft one?" Currently, yes. I hope *you're* not asking for it to be any other way. Hee Hee. Keep 'em coming, folks. This ought to keep us busy until LOZ drives Crock nuts enough to _force_ Mike and Mark to regroup ;-) Cheers! -Marc ------------------------------ Subject: "At This Great Distance" From: rlmoore @ students.wisc.edu (rl moore) Date: Wed, 24 Apr 1996 10:51:19 -0500 I just wanted to thank Winston and Mike (Mr. Pink) for getting me a copy of "At this Great Distance" and other L42 rarities. This has now become my favorite song by the boys and it just goes to prove the incredable range and style they had. WHAT A SONG!!!! I was wondering how much influence,if any, Alan Holdsworth had in its creation, because it reminds me so much of one of my favorite tunes of his "In The Mystery" off of his "Metal Fatigue" disc. And Gary Husbands playing again shows off his amazing range as well. I'd like to hear from anybody who could give me background on this song or what you think of it. Thanks again to Mike and Winston. -Royal ------------------------------ Subject: Maturity of the band's shows From: Rob Kadel Date: Wed, 24 Apr 1996 12:53:19 -0400 (EDT) Hi, all. I was listening to The White Funky early this morning (since I was working on a paper and didn't go to bed until 7:30 a.m. - ugh). Has anyone else noticed how much more mature the band sounds in later shows than in this one (in talking/shouting to the audience, that is)? In reading The Definitive Biography, they talk about how they were bringing Crockford on board in part to provide them with a more professional, "flashy" show. Would this attribute to this increased maturity from show to show, or is it simply because the guys got older and more relaxed? -Rob ************************************************************************ Rob Kadel Department of Sociology Institutional Planning and Research 404-727-7510 Emory University 404-727-0765 ------------------------------ Subject: IOW I?!?! From: Bill Wilson Date: Wed, 24 Apr 1996 15:23:43 -0700 Hello all! way back when before this list ever existed, i was on the Depeche Mode mailing list, and they did something cool. I think that it is time in the midst of all the other cool stuff for us to do something cool also!!! here is what I propose. a Tape with a collection of Level 42 covers done by musicians on the list! i know that i suck and would in no way ever be able to come up with a song (my air bass is just great though... :) ), but i am sure that with all the musicians on the list we could come up with some pretty hoppin and phat tunes! anyone interested? i will coordinate the whole thing, and probably just ask for donations for the shipping costs.... :) let me know... I think that this would be a very cool and possibly ongoing project! thanks bill ------------------------------ Subject: Title For B-Sides CD From: WINMAN @ gnn.com (WINSTON WALKER) Date: Wed, 24 Apr 1996 18:29:47 As Lolita and myself are trying to design an interesting cover for the B-Sides CD, we noticed that we didn't have an cool title for this project. Any suggestions? If so please e-mail with your ideas, I will post the best on Friday!! Here are some of our cool/lame ideas: A Different Level, An Alternate Level, The Flip Side, Turn It Over, The Bassment tapes, Level: B, 4orty2, As Years Go By: B-Sides 1979-1994 or lastly As Years Go By: 15 years of Level 42 B-sides Also, I was advised by John Venzon that John in Oregon and Steve in the UK were also creating a cover. This should turn out great for all involved! Sounds like we will have a great selection to choose from. Winston ------------------------------ Subject: Eric's Web Page From: lonestar @ redshift.com (Jerry Rehn) Date: Wed, 24 Apr 1996 20:16:41 -0700 Greetings everyone, Just a couple of things may have already been brought to the attention of our fine Digest Master, Eric. The web page that you have established has some errors. One is that you have Coup d'Etat coming off of the [1995] Worldmachine release. You had me thinking that I had let another CD release go by without knowing!! It should be, as you know, 1985. Another is that you have the record label being Spetrum Music. I believe it's Spectrum Music. And one final item. Your page also states that Coup d'Etat was ONLY released on the UK version of Worldmachine. I have Coup d'Etat instrumental on a b-side of a 7"single, which escapes my mind at the moment. Sorry to be such a nit-picky nag, but just in case we have a new potential brother or sister wanting membership into the world of 42, they need to be able to find it with as much accurate help as those of us can give. See what a caring bunch of people we are!! Take Care One and All!! - Jerry Rehn [Thanks for the proofing! As for Coup D'Etat, I updated the page to read "...from the 1985 Worldmachine era", since I didn't want to list the whole discography for that one track. -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: I've been too quiet From: TTrudell @ aol.com Date: Thu, 25 Apr 1996 00:52:09 -0400 1) Smashie, what's "stonker" mean? 2) Level42 may be great live, but they have to be one of the most innovative studio bands ever as well. I just bought a new stereo, and there's a lot more I'm hearing in the songs now. You'd think you memorize everything in a song if you hear it 1000 times. Then you find something new. That's because of some intense studio work by some clever musicians and engineers. FOR EXAMPLE - has anyone noticed on the song "Leaving Me Now" (World Machine) in the left speaker I think its Mark slapping an unamplified bass into a microphone, and sending that through some kind of flanger. Weird! Anyone else have an opinion on this? Loz - are you still selling the L42 bio? Was that you? email me please for I've been lame. Your most humble etc. Tom ------------------------------ Subject: Gone For A Week...Idea On Level 42 Re-Issue At The Bottom!!!!!!!! From: Fabfriday @ aol.com Date: Thu, 25 Apr 1996 00:54:55 -0400 Wow, you leave for a week and so much e-mail piles up.... I went to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to find a house for my new radio job (WVOD Manteo, 99.1 Alternative). Quite a change from NJ....Anyway, I'll be doing sales\advertising, but will assist in supplying out-of-print 80's music for carting, including classic Level 42. I will also push new L42 and Boon's solo project. Both should do well in this format..... Nuff said. Audiophile? Sounds like that LONG entry I wrote a while back "When Is an Import and Import...." and we exposed how these companies LOVE to $$ cash $$ in on rarity and our quest for this material....... As a former student of Business Law, they are in fact breaking copyright law with these COPIES of Live At Wembly..... New Avengers???? It's a cool theory..... Cooler if true. Mark's been getting into remixing lately, so this could be a new direction. Don't think it's "Go Go Go" they're all chanting for L42...It sounds like "Waoh Waoh" On the lookout for "Turn It On" compilation. Good to hear about these OFFICIAL pending L42 releases...... Mark planning on releasing in the US???? ZTT is a great company.... EMI works with CHRYSALIS which is a SH@#%Y company....They delete almost all their tiltles after a year. At least in the US..... The Pet Shop Boys and Blondie are all they ever seem to support. On a final non L42 note... Just got my copy of Man Of Colours by Icehouse through Lakeshore Music. This is the album with Crazy, Electric Blue, My Obsession, and A Man Of Colours..... FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!! Another great group lost through Chrysalis. If you like the group, I've heard that the album has now even been dropped in Australia, so order it FAST..... ****************************************************************************** *********************** Last word: I've been in contact with Carl Caprioglio of Oglio (Sony) Records (specialize in re-issues of 80's New Wave and the like). Just released a Men W/O Hats Greatest Hits and an Icehouse album is in the works. Also do Richard Blades Flashback Favorites, Freur, King, Flashback Cafe, and more. Perhaps we can re-issue old Level 42 through him... If you sound interested, e-mail me and I will forward the requests to him...Maybe this will spark something...... Mark and Phil only played on the first, but Gary Barnacle appeared on all three. Can anyone name any more? (Lazlo?) As I am very interested in this group which has strong Level 42 connections. BTW, I was right. Boon didnt play Sax on Instrumental Love. See you soon..........................LOZ
