From: Mr Fish Date: Mon, 22 Apr 1996 11:18:33 +0100 (BST) Nigel and the others at Jo Da Flos this weekend... Sorry that Marcus and I didn't show up on Saturday... We were too late to catch the ferry across in time (I guess we should have got up earlier!!). I decided to do some project work (due in this week) instead and I think Marcus has similar callings. What did you do? Did you go to 'his' house? Anyway I hope you all had a great time!! Cheers, David ------------------------------ Subject: Pontificating with the Scarlet Witch From: "Jay Tracy" Date: Mon, 22 Apr 1996 06:38:03 -0400 (EDT) The New Avengers is a very stupid band name...question time, now why the hell (if all this is true) decide to get together and release new material under a new name on a Level 42 album, doesn't make sense, do they think that RCA will say, "oh, ok, they changed their name so we wont masticate their work." I don't see it happinin'. Loz, you mentioned on the hotline # that there is a tenative lineup for Mark's band, could you list the names please ? Great to have "Can't Walk You Home" on CD, killer bass line! --jay Brigham & Women's Hospital ------------------------------ Subject: Urban Fascination From: lolita @ interserv.com Date: Mon, 22 Apr 1996 06:32:42 -0700 Urban Fascination is the Japanese name for the Level 42 album. I think this information should be put on the FAQ or the discography since it is often asked. Here is a suggestion, any thoughts ???? 1. Second Pilgrimage planned now for late june/early july. Flights are cheap from the US and the Isle of Wight has not yet got into the summer holiday period. 2. Contact Mark/Crock and see if we can tie up the second trip with one of, or the first of Mark's new band gigs (working name of band rumoured in my local is "The Old Hillman Imps" !!) My money's on LOZ being right.... 3. A UK Co-ordinator and a US co-ordinator to try to secure some volume discount on flights, Bed & Breakfast, rail travel etc etc 4. Get a shopping list of CD's Vinyl etc that subscibers want, and can collect when they come to Joe Daflo's These are just some first thoughts, but I'm sure Mark would want a realy positive response to his new band and who better to give him that than us ??? Also I am sure far more people would make the effort if they were giong to get to see the KING play live. Richard You've just experienced the Cybersensational Smith ! (New Avengers) It's only a touchy subject because of the secrecy of your source(s) and Loz's direct contact with the everlovin' Crock, that's all. I'm sure it's not a personal thing. >I also saw Tears For Fears on Friday night at a club in Boston. Eric, you suck. You did, of course, take a DAT recorder in your pocket, so you can share a recording with the rest of us unfortunate TFF fans who won't get to see them this time 'round, right? [right... -Eric] Here's a non-Level but very 80's CD recommendation. If you like Howard Jones, pick up his new CD "Live Acoustic America." It's a recording of a concert in LA from his 1992 acoustic tour, just him on piano and Carol Steele (Steve Winwood [she was the percussionist in the video for The Finer Things], Tears For Fears [she was the percussionist in the video for Advice For The Young At Heart], et al, and a VERY cool lady to talk to, I might add) on percussion. He plays most of his old hits, like New Song, What Is Love, Like To Get To Know You Well, as well as songs from all through his career. It's great hearing some different arrangements, and he's a FANTASTIC piano player. Don't worry, it's not lounge music, it's good. It's on Plump Records, and here are some net address from the liner notes: Howard Jones email: hojoonthenet @ howardjones.music.co.uk (hojoonthenet, that's cool) Howard Jones US Information Network: http://www.amug.org/~hojoinfo/index.html Plump Records: http://www.plump.com/plump TCOY, Pat Pat Flanagan Publishing & Design PO Box 281, Granger, IN 46530-0281 email: pfpd @ pobox.com website: http://www.pobox.com/~pfpd TOTALMEDIA PUBLISHING: Print * Disk * Interactive * CDROM * Internet ------------------------------ Subject: Re: webpage From: "Vince Mora" Date: Mon, 22 Apr 1996 09:28:36 -0600 (MDT) Dan writes: > Perhaps a collective effort could be made > to scan picture from tour books and send them to Eric to start a new section > of the Level 42 page. I'm under the impression that LOZ was not aware that we were going ahead with the disc, and that we have the finalized track listing. He suggests a bunch of demo versions and remixes. The remixes are to be a separate CD. I think that the B-Sides CD, should be tracks that were commercially available, not demo versions. perhaps he would be willing to provide copies of the tracks that John deems "noisy". What is the concensus? Winston ------------------------------ Subject: L42 is new for me, old for you; & TFF/Boston From: Marc_Dupuis @ MADISONUSA.CCMAIL.CompuServe.COM Date: 22 Apr 96 15:11:51 EDT I just bought and listened to Running In The Family. I now have World Machine, RITF, Guaranteed, and Staring At The Sun. And the video's for RITF collection and Fait Accompli. I love all their stuff, of course, otherwise I wouldn't be here, but I _still_ like SATS the best, and I _still_ like Gary Husband the best. Don't get me wrong, Phil is an excellent drummer, has many great qualities, it's just, well, you know... And Alan Murphy was a monster, and the tracks by Holdsworth (one of my favorites) and Jakko compared to Boon - well let's just say Boon wasn't a technician and leave at that. I don't want to offend any of the traditionalists, and Boon also had fine qualities, so why did I even bring it up? For the argument, I guess! Anyhow, Leaving Me Now has been my favorite "older" L42 song (there, now you can't slam me for just liking the athletic tracks!) since seeing them at Toads Place/New Haven back in the Gould era, and HIMH I think is the epitome of the L42 in-your-face righteous PHONKAY (tm) emotional sonic barrage. Now I'll really piss you off, IMHO Mark's best playing is on Kershaw's "Easy." I haven't heard Mr. Pink or Microkid yet, still looking for these discs (why do I have such a difficult time finding even the non-rarities, dammit!), so I may yet be swayed... And you know what? I really like Mike's writing, playing, sequencing, harmonies - but his stage presence has always bugged me. It seems kind of contrived, I don't know, anybody else ever feel this way? The rest of the boys always came across so well, Mike always looked like he didn't feel quite comfortable, or like he didn't want to be upstaged by Mark (which is impossible!). Can you believe that Mark can play that stuff while singing (and I think his voice is great, gutsy baritone stretching into tenor at times, with a chewy center!) - and I saw him pull it off while suffering thru a 102 degree temperature! He chews gum really well, too. Unrelated. Throw the flags after the play is completed... But Eric said it was okay to post so you'll have to try to flame him as well (good luck)! I thought Tears for Fears at Avalon/Boston Friday night was great! Raoul and the Kings of Spain has *really* grown on me, this a great album! Show was very good, I don't like their older "pop" material much (with exceptions Woman In Chains and Break It Down Again) but the place was packed and appreciative of all the material. It's nice to have _one_ band I like that still performs (Nik Kershaw, TFF, and L42 are the digests I subscribe to), and if anything by TFF has ever caught your ear you owe it to yourself to try to see this tour, or at least get Raoul; God knows when Roland will go belly up due to Record Company indifference, or whatever it is that's killing our hero's. Hello to Jodi (thanks for the info again) and to Eric - good call on Cornwell's - brews up the ying-yang or what! By the way, Eric Hansen is a good looking guy according to my wife. I only mention this because if Pat Flanagan isn't inclined to react to anything above, he will certainly react to this! Hee Hee Har Har! Let the festivities begin! ;-) -Marc Dupuis [and begin they shall, I'm sure!!! hee hee hee! (hey, you gotta take what you can get, right?!?!) -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: "A Way You'll Never Be" From: "Heather Swanson" Date: Mon, 22 Apr 1996 17:29:40 EDT Hi, all... I know I said I was gone, but I had a sec & checked the mailing list for any news. John mentioned Leisure Process' song, "A Way You'll Never Be' and said Mark plays bass on it. This is true, but FYI (just to add to the greatness!) Phil is also playing the drums on the track. Just thought I'd add that bit of info. Cheers! Thanks to the person who gave his answer to my "waoh, waoh, waoh" question. Does anyone know where this jazz-funk chant originated? Just curious. BTW, "Urban Fascination" is really their first album renamed for the Japanese because they believe 42 is an unlucky number. LOZ - Thanks so much for the Biography! Although, I don't think I'd want to have your baby, you are still a very nice person for making these books available. I could have easily read the book in one sitting but unfortunately life gets in the way so I'm only a little more than halfway through it but I did only get it Friday. (I hate run-on sentences) I advise all to buy this book at such a deal! Down with Audiophile!! I am so looking forward to the rumored "New Avengers" stuff from Mark and Mike and I'm so happy that there are now 300 members to this wonderful list! 300 diehard fans and that's only on the internet! Regarding those of us in L.A., thanks for the responses I got (through the digest). So far, I know there's me, Elson, Colin Campbell, and John Venzon. Well, there's four and I'm convinced there's more and at least one more female! Come out whereever you are! I agree that NYC shouldn't be the only place to congregate for Level fun. Let's get together! I, too, wanted to go to Elson's band's show a while back when he advertised but, alas, I am only 20 and cannot get into such shows. BTW, for Veronica, the other version of Forever Now is on the Resurgence label. Speaking of Resurgence FN, "Time Will Heal" is on this. Someone asked about that. I figure by the time they're available, I will have the extra cash. You said the lowest you can press is 500 so we could get 5 each if 100 people respond. Would we have to buy 5 each? Sorry, if you were just kidding about that but I didn't get it. Were you kidding? Anyway the most I could get is 2. Please let me know what the deal is!
