I've been lurking on this mailing list for a bit. What a nice group we have here :) I'm seeking the UK verion of World Machine (the one that contains Sleep on my Heart). Anyone know of a good CD store online that I can order it from? Also, I have the Resurgence version of FN. I would love to get my hands on the other version as well (Polydor is it?). Thanks! Hope the lyrics I sent came through, I notice now that the CD omits the lyrics for My Hero, the cassette has them though. /Lars-Ove (Love42 on Sunday chats) Lars-Ove Karlsson at home. ** e-mail: love.karlsson @ mailbox.swipnet.se ** e-mail at work: love @ iar.se ------------------------------ Subject: "My hero" From: WJGreer @ aol.com Date: Sat, 20 Apr 1996 12:04:56 -0400 My CD copy of True Colors (note the decadent American spelling) does have My Hero on it. But somewhere I have a cassette copy (buried deeply in a box - won't find it this lifetime) of TC which doesn't. I remember when I got the CD, I was stoked that it had a song I hadn't heard before. After having a bit of a rummage through some 12" singles, I discovered that a remixed version of Guaranteed was labelled "The New Avengers Mix". Coincidence? Could they be working together again? Or am I just talking s**t! 2) Listening to a B side called Past Lives, does anybody know what the reference in the song "Welcome to the house of Usher" is all about? 3) Finally, being a fan of the band since about 1983, I've got just about everything they've done in one format or another, and was amazed to read in the Digest the other day about a song called "Time Will Heal". Now I understand that this features on a new compilation called "Turn it on" (which I don't believe is due to be released over here in the UK - can anybody correct me on that?), but I had never heard of this song before. Did it feature on any other record? Bye everybody, Steve. PS: A great follow-up to the B-sides CD could be the 12" singles CD. The Children Say extended version would have to feature! ------------------------------------------------------ | / |_ / / | 04/20/96 17:35:45 | | \ | |- | | |- |--------------------------------| | / \ \ \/ \ | steve @ slamsoft.netkonect.co.uk | ------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Subject: Schtuff From: John Edward Martin Shuford Date: Sat, 20 Apr 1996 13:28:29 -0700 (PDT) Some observations or corrections: 1) To the guy who keeps asking whether his vinyl copy of Staring at the Sun that he picked up for $7 is worth anything: yes...it's worth less than $7. I've seen new copies of Staring (still shrinkwrapped) for $4, and used copies of the disc for $8 or $9. Besides, the vinyl doesn't even include "Gresham Blues." Son, you got TAKEN!!! 2) The Live at Wembley stuff is driving me nuts. L42 never played Wembley Stadium, let alone sold it out for 8 straight nights, six straight nights, etc. Wembley stadium seats around 72,000 to 75,000 (I believe). Wembley Arena seasts something like 11,000 to 14,000 (I think). A kind Brit could supply correct figures for us. But the point is that the Live at Wembley stuff was at the arena, not at the outdoor stadium. 3) Mark, Mike, and the New Avengers: Does anyone remember the April Fool's rumour back in 1987 or 1986 that Billy Idol had contracted AIDS and had done himself in? Probably would have been a wise career move at that point, but the rumour (obviously) had absolutely no truth to it. So rumours can be very specific ("The New Avengers") and have no substance. The name "The New Avengers" was also used on a mix of Guaranteed by the same name (personally I'm rather fond of "Wheel Spin Warriors"). And remember the big rumour that Mark was working with Midge Ure and Carl Palmer on a new project (and Midge's album came out, and Mark wasn't associated with it)? On the other hand, Crockford doesn't know everything, and he has been known not to admit things that were true for various contractual or image-of-the-band reasons. 4) Audiophile: Bootlegging is bootlegging, that's why we're worried about it. But Audiophile really irks me. They supposedly really like the stuff they carry and are big fans, but then they stick it to the other big fans hard. I can see charging for an NTSC VHS copy of a videotape if they also allow you to purchase the laserdisc yourself, but they're just sitting back there with a "master" charging $40 a pop. And believe me, it's not just the L42 stuff. They do it to everyone. And the L42 Biography is yet another prime example of how they're making big bucks wherever they can. One thing I think we L42 fans can do (because we are pretty resourceful and organized) is work out some kind of bank account situation, probably set up in the UK, with a few people who handle the requests. We place our orders through them, with enough to cover shipping and a small reimbursement for time and effort. I don't know if this would be economically competitive (I leave this for someone else to figure out), but it would be nice to cut out the dealers and their mark up as much as possible, and to keep our dealings "in house," as it were. Comments? Any ideas on how we could make it work? ------------------------------ Subject: My Hero From: John Edward Martin Shuford Date: Sat, 20 Apr 1996 13:31:55 -0700 (PDT) I don't know if the question was whether there has ever been a version of True Colours without "My Hero" or whether there has ever been a version of True Colours on CD that was released without "My Hero." I have a copy of the cassette (surprise! no "My Hero") and a copy of the CD (obviously with "My Hero"). Catalog numbers are the same, minus the final digit (which designates whether it is cassette, vinyl, or CD). ------------------------------ Subject: Webpage From: Dan Date: Sat, 20 Apr 1996 17:32:09 -0400 Whoever wants to check it out, I just started my www page @ http://www.nd.edu:80/~ddelsavi/ I'm just getting the hang of it, so bear with me. I'm planning to scan pictures from L42 tour book (Guaranteed) and put them up. Maybe some pictures from Loz's book. Whoever has a tourbook from Forever Now and earlier albums let me know. I AM NOT CREATING A NEW L42 PAGE!!!! Just wanted to put some pictures up. Perhaps a collective effort could be made to scan picture from tour books and send them to Eric to start a new section of the Level 42 page. Just a thought. Remember that? Wahhhooooo! Two days later and that number has swelled to almost 70! I am keeping track of everyone's request, and it doesn't look like it will slow down. P-shew! At any rate, as more people write in, the time it is going to take to burn these things gets longer and longer. What does this mean? Well, if you write in today to ask for one, the lag time could be anywhere from 2-4 months, depending on if we find more people willing to burn CDs and ship them out. Anyone on the list that has access to a CD recorder, and who would be willing to help out, PLEASE EMAIL ME! At the moment I have a commitment to write only 50 of the almost 70 that need to be done. Also, I have all the tracks that we listed on the disc, but would like to try and find a 'cleaner' version of the two tracks 'THE RETURN OF THE HANDSOME RUGGED MAN' and 'Can't Walk You Home'. While the copies I have right now are usable, they are pretty noisy coming into and out of the track. (Winston did, I must add, a great job getting them to me, just that vinyl ages. It's a fact.) Email if you have either of these two tracks and can get them onto DAT. Remember, you don't have to donate to get a B-side disc, but it helps to get the best source available. Now the sticky question of copyright: This month's issue of MacUser (Yes, this whole project is being put together on a Macintosh! Deal with it Wintel people!) on page 118 it states: "In a nutshell, Section 107 of the U.S. Copyright Code lets you make a single copy of copyrighted material for noncommercial, personal use. You can, therefore, make a CD containing a collection of you favorite disco hits from the '70's and play it in your home, in your car, or on a portable disc player without the fear that the authorities will break down your door. Things get dicey when you take that same CD and play it for a large group of people - say, on a tour bus, in a tavern, or over a commercial DJ service. Such broadcasting is considered a public performance - one for which the copyright holder must be paid." So! I am making one copy of this Level 42 music for noncommercial, personal use. I am not charging for the disc, as most are providing the blank, and if any charge is incurred, I will save shipping and blank disc receipts. As for the second part, I don't want to catch any of you riding on a tour bus to go to JoDaFlo's (a tavern) listening to the disc on a DJ's broadcasting service. Got it? You get us in terrible, terrible trouble! So don't do it. To sum up: 1) If you still want a disc: You are gonna wait a bit. 2) If you have a CD recorder and want to help the cause, email me! 3) If you have the two above tracks AND a DAT player, email me! 4) Don't sell this disc when you get it! 5) Don't play the disc in a public place, otherwise the Feds will be after you! 6) I am breaking copyright law by quotating copyrighted text to explain that we aren't breaking copyright law. 7) I love summing up. It gives me a sense that everyone scrolls down to the end to see what the hell my point was in the first place! TCOY (Ohh! A new Eric inspired sign-off! I am looking forward to my weekend trip to New York on May 10-12, 1996. Lolita and Winston have been very gracious to let me stay a few days and let me share my L42 collection, I just wanted to pass along that this NYC trip would be a good time, as Lolita has said, to come copy, view, and hear some rare and NEW stuff (like the Royal Albert gig, the Guaranteed and Forever Now video(s) complilation, and a few surprises) I have been waiting to play this in front of other L42 fans, and would like share this experience with other DEVOUT LEVELHEADS, 24hours of L42...WOW-my b-day wish has come true! Contact Winston about the details! I contacted, (a very knoledgeable and important figure in the L42 world, HINT HINT HINT) and asked them if MIKE and MARK are indeed working together again. the response you may ask....? "ABSOLUTELY, and expect a single from the NEW AVENGERS, around January 15, 1997 and it WILL be on the double CD of Level 42 at The Royal Albert Hall Farewell Concert, possibly 4-5 new tracks!"
