However it was definately louder and more vociferous at L42 gigs than any other. Mark always used to play along to the chant in his Bass Solo's to really rev the crowd up. (he could always play his adlib'd version faster than we could sing ours). I'm afraid I have no idea where the idea came from or whether it was a Level 42 "thing". I just know the Level 42 fans took to it more than anyone else! Over the years as the Band achieved more commercial success and wandered from their Jazz/Funk "roots" the chanting got less and less. Infact during their last tour I was unable to start the chant at all at the Wolverhampton gig !!!! Still I make up for it most days in the car !! < Fond Memories Mode OFF > Sorry this does not help too much but I enjoyed the reminiscening (why no spell checkers in EMail software ?) Must go I need a tissue !! You've just experienced the Cybersensational Smith ! The version that is on the 12" single is of course longer than the version included on the "Turn It On" compilation. p.s. For everyone in the NY/NJ area, HMV Records at 47th & 5th ave in Manhattan has a few copies of the "Turn It On" compilation. I saw 3 copies there on Monday -April 15th. Winston ------------------------------ Subject: Reflex? From: Tom Sewell Date: Tue, 16 Apr 1996 10:37:27 -0500 Yo Levelheads! I have a question. In a 1985 issue of Guitar World (don't remember which one) Mark is listed as playing drums for a band called Reflex. Would that be the same band that recorded "The Politics of Dancing" from 1983? I've always wondered about this. I have the cassette and it doesn't have any musician credited in the sleeve. If someone knows, please advise. Tom Sewell tsewell @ tsixroads.com ------------------------------ Subject: Images for B-sides CD From: lolita @ interserv.com Date: Tue, 16 Apr 1996 09:48:39 -0700 Hey All - Winston and I were batting around some ideas for the cover of the B-sides CD. One idea was to convert one or several images from Pat Flanagan's screen saver into Photostyler or Pagemaker and use that. Pat, how do we go about doing this? Your files are in a .cat extension and we would need .bmp or .gif. I don't know a ton about this stuff, so please send me a private e-mail detailing explicit instructions (that is, if you think it's okay to use one of the images. If not, let me know). Another idea was to scan the group's various logos throughout the years and have a collection of those as the cover. The last idea, which is a good one, is to have a collection of the pictures of the best CD or vinyl single covers. That way, people who don't own many/any of these singles and have not seen the images would feel like they were gettin' the full flava! We could actually implement all three of these ideas since we will probably end up with three different CDs. The last idea could be used for the B-sides, the second one for the remixes, and the first one for the live tracks. What do you guys think? I managed to get the 12" version a few years ago, and I now prefer the B side to the A! I heard somewhere that their last album Forever Now has been released in America with a different track lineup to the UK one. I noticed it had some extra tracks on there, namely "The Bends" and "Learn to say no". I'm one of the charter members of this list, since Waaay back in July '93, so I don't feel like I should leave the list, but I am impressed that a lot of you folks can't seem to run out of things to say about L42! Especially Loz...I'm just waiting for the day when he shows up at Crockford's door, and Crockford, so pissed, says, "Here! YOU be the manager!" and storms out... :) Anyway, I believe there are at least half a dozen Levelheads on the list in the Los Angeles vicinity; I know of at least two personally, and I have mailed a couple more of them occasionally. Want one? From: John Venzon Date: Tue, 16 Apr 96 15:54:45 -0800 Well Kids Here It Is! The final track listing for Disc #1 as decided by vote and by, well, slappin' the thing together. Level 42 B-Sides Disc #1 8:52 > 01 >INSTRUMENTAL LOVE 6:22 > 02 >FORTY TWO 6:52 > 03 >BEEZER ONE 8:28 > 04 >FOUNDATION & EMPIRE Parts 1 & 2 5:42 > 05 >THE RETURN OF THE HANDSOME RUGGED MAN 6:43 > 06 >CAN'T WALK YOU HOME 6:20 > 07 >FREEDOM 4:44 > 08 >THREE WORDS 4:13 > 09 *ALL SHE WANTS* 4:43 > 10 *AT THIS GREAT DISTANCE* 4:37 > 11 *AS YEARS GO BY* 4:06 > 12 *TIME WILL HEAL* ----- 71:42 Since we can only really fit around 72 minutes safely on a 74 minute blank CD, we had to leave tracks off. They are: Alternate Level 42 B-Sides 7:08 > 01 *Bends, The* 4:46 > 02 *Heart on the Line* 4:12 > 03 *Learn to Say No* 5:34 > 04 *Past Lives* 5:21 > 05 *Play Me* 4:01 > 06 >Coup D=B9Etat (Instrumental) ----- 30:12 The reason these were left off is the that tracks 1-5 are on the Resurgence CD release of Forever Now. At first I objected as I couldn't find the disc, but to include them we'd have to leave tracks off that are only on vinyl and are LOOOOONNNNG out of print. This tipped the scales to lose these tracks. If you want the deleted tracks, as I did, send me an email and I'll give you the URL to the place that I got mine. It cost me $14.08 (US funds) and was shipped in four days to my front door! As for track 6, that might make it onto a remix CD that we could do in the future... but I am getting ahead of myself. I know that many people were tweaked because they wanted one of these CD but didn't have a track to add to the pot. Now that we have the thing together, we are taking emails to find out how many other people want one. This way we can decide the approach to take in getting them to those who want one. At this point, Jeremy and I don't want the responsibility of going to a pressing plant and opening ourselves up to charges of bootlegging. I know, I know, I know. Everyone has posted saying that no matter what I say here, this is against the law. Just ask yourself this, though, do YOU want to be the one who takes a CD of copyrighted songs to a plant and signs a receipt that says you are responsible for them? I don't. So, here is the plan. Just to get an accurate count of who REALLY wants one, send me an email to: jvenzon @ aol.com or jvenzon @ primenet.com with this in the subject header: **I want a disc!** I get a ton of email, so the ** will allow me to find your email in the list right away. If it turns out that only 50-60 people actually want one (as opposed to 200 people posting 'yeah, that'd be cool') we can decide if Jeremy and I could split the list and each burn half. This way we'd keep it 'grass roots' and lower profile. In addition, I think the best plan is to have people who want one go out and buy a blank 74 minute CD and prepaid return packet and send that to Jeremy or I. This way NO money has changed hands, and you get the CD. If you don't know where to buy them, It'd be $20 for the blank and shipping. I like the first option, as it's worked for millions of DeadHeads! The only thing I ask in payment for my work putting this together, and I am VERY serious about this, is that anyone who gets one is not to sell it. It would break my heart to see people other than the boys making $$ off of it. The motivation for putting this together is to share the best of Level 42 with those of you who don't look at me strange when I say I LOVE Level 42. I think you all know what I am talking about: "Level 42? Didn't they do that one song back in the 80's? What was it called? Something... Something..." Says your ignorant friend. "Something about you." You say. "Yeah. Something about you. You really like them?" "Yes! Not only that, but listen to this," You say as you reach over and put on "Good Man in a Storm" or "The Sunbed Song" or....... To sum up: If you want a CD with the stipulation that you don't sell it 1) Send an email to me with **I want one!** in the subject header 2) We will tally up the list 3) We will let you know how many sent us emails and when we can get you a disc! BUT: if we get too many (more than 70) someone else will have to buy a CD recorder. That or perhaps someone who gets a list can make cassette dubs for those who don't get one. The bottom line: we want everyone who wants one to get one. We'll play it by ear. BTW, Rob Kadel, Bill Wilson and Lolita, you are on the top of the list. Send in those email, boys and girls! I'm new to L42 mailing list. I've been a fan since '86, catching World Machine fever while growing up in Omaha(wanna challenge?try finding L42 albums in Omaha). I graduated from Cal-Berkeley in '93, and I am a disc jockey for KALX, the Cal-Berkeley Radio station. My airname is Micro-Kid! I'm now in Oakland, and I've managed to compile all L42 albums, a couple imports(thank God for Virgin Records in SF), and some great posters. I'm stilltrying to track down some singles and random B-sides I don't have yet. Anyone know of anyplace in the Bay Area i can track some stuff down? Any help would be appreciated!!!! It caught my eye because it was called 'Retro Acid Jazz', and on closer inspection turned out to be an entire CD of music by the James Taylor Quartet. These CDs have special copyright licensing deals on them - they're sent out for free to video production companies etc, who then pay depending on the amount of music they use from the CD in their programmes. Any other L42 fans who are into JTQ might be interested in this - I expect it would all have been recorded specially, as there are 30 second and 60 second commercial length versions of all the tracks, so it's probably not on any of their other albums. The CD is number BRH 67 on the BRUTON music library. If you want a copy you could try ringing Bruton in London on (44) (0)181 967 1100, or write to them at Bruton Music Ltd, 165-167 High Road, Willesden, London NW10 2SG, UK. Remember, they send out copies for free to video production companies... ;-)
