From: Fabfriday @ aol.com Date: Mon, 15 Apr 1996 10:54:05 -0400 I forget who mentioned that there was little promotion for Staring At The Sun in the US. In fact, there was a decent amount, at least in the New York area. Most record stores had large posters of the album cover in the New Release sections, and Sam Goody and Musicland even had the album featured in their mailers for a while. Radio was given several versions of Heaven In My Hands, but it never picked up. Hell, I even heard Tracie in a Burger King once... Then, the band came to America to shoot many of the albums videos and part of Fait Acompli. For Level Best, they re-released a radio promo for Leaving Me Now... So, Polygram-Polydor actualy tried. Yet, most DJ's and listeners never realy knew who Level 42 was. And for those who did, Staring At The Sun took the band in a new direction that confused radio. The band was already difficult to label format wise (that's why Something About You, Hot Water, and Lessons In Love were the only songs to ever make the US charts) since they weren't really pop or rock, but a combination of elements. Then Staring came out and the sound was different.... US radio is stuborn to new sounds. Being in radio for so long, I can see how this happens. I don't like it, but it's the case... The album that never got promoted was Guaranteed from RCA. No posters, New Release displays or anything. It went right to the CD bins behind all the other CD's in the "L" section. I knew about it through a chance "Things From England" show on 102.7 WNEW NY when they played Guaranteed months before the US release and by following Billboard's International charts. Polygram did a decent job World Machine through Level Best (could've been better). RCA just never even tried... Inside this world machine..... I'm pretty new to the digest. I didn't post what you were asking about, but I do have a compilation LP with 2 songs on it. Polydor Move 1 Move Groove and Nightclubbing (1982) 2 LP set of various artists, that includes Weave Your Spell and Freedom (mike & mark) Don't know if this helps you but that's all the info I can contribute at this time. ------------------------------ Subject: White Alaskan Gary Holdsworth in the UK From: Daniel James Organization: Statistical Sciences Date: Mon, 15 Apr 1996 10:10:32 -0700 > Hey all! I am finally back on the net after about a month of being away. I > moved from Los Angeles to Ketchikan, Alaska last month. Let me tell y'all > .... this town is so small, I don't think anyone here as even heard of Level > 42! oh well.. I didn't know they actually had computers in Alaska, much less Internet access!!! :) > I followed up on Daniel James's (via Brent) tip off myself and ordered > White Funky through CD Europe - I received an email today telling me it has > been shipped just 11 days after I placed the order. CD Europe seem to have > an enormous listing of Level 42 stuff (the best I've seen so far) and I > couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that WF was available. They're really > worth a look. I haven't received an e-mail from them yet, so I checked their web page and found that it's been filled!!! YAHOO! I can't wait for this. Of course, my copy of "Turn It On" is still on order, but that's okay, I'm not nearly as excited about that as I am about the White Funky!!! > See you in Joe DaFlo's next weekend. Eye's down for a full house!! I'm really jealous about this trip. I think that perhaps us Yanks should plan a trip for sometime in June (as I'm planning on taking two weeks off to travel sometime in June). > Hey guys, just wondering if anyone might know, why did Alan Holdsworth leave > Level 42? I read an interview in a guitar magazine where Alan Holdsworth said > how happy he was to be on-board and it sounded like he had joined the band as a > permanent full time member. I was dissapointed to see him go. Does anyone know > about this? . . .thanks, Pete. A friend of mine has met him several times in a small club in San Rafael where he plays from time to time. He asked him about his bit with Level 42 and got the impression he didn't really enjoy it that much. He also spoke with Gary Husband once who was much more direct and said he didn't like working with the band at all. He said he didn't like having to perform with sequencers, but refrained from any comments about the band members themselves. You can feel some of this in the Modern Drummer interview (which I now hope to have finished by Wed, or Thursday at the latest). This past Tuesday at Tower Records, I bought a new Karussel CD compilation "Turn It On." It has a similar track listing to "On a Level". There's one track I never heard of before, dated 1983: "Can't Walk You Home." Can anyone tell me if this is a B-side or outtake? It's a shame it wasn't on LP because it's a rather excellent track. Thanks, Kym belknap @ pixi.com ------------------------------ Subject: Hidden Treasure at Tower!!!!!! From: Fabfriday @ aol.com Date: Mon, 15 Apr 1996 22:49:02 -0400 So, I'm looking at the 80's compilations at my local NJ Tower Records when I stumble across a 3 CD Box Set called The Superstars Collection (The Prince's Trust) for $30. Here's three import CD's for $10 each. It has the live version of Something About You and Running In The Family. Not to mention scores of live tracks by Midge Ure, Howard Jones, Madness, Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran, etc.... It's pure heaven... Oh yeah, and on the cover is a group photo of many of the artists, and there's Mark in the back left. If you find this, or any of the single discs BUY THEM. BUY THEM. BUY THEM. Three discs of LIVE recordings by the best. I have just under 1500 CD's, and these make the top 10 of my collection........ FAB ------------------------------ Subject: New Avengers, L.A.,Waoh, Suggs From: LittleHalo @ aol.com Date: Tue, 16 Apr 1996 03:02:57 -0400 So....Soooooooooooooo! What's up with this rumor about Mark and Mike working together? Audiophile says they are. Loz says that's absolutely untrue. Sh20Matt/Mikey says they ARE and are calling themselves the New Avengers. Well, Mikey, were you just joking or if you truly heard this where are you getting your info from? I'd be ever so delighted if they were working together again. I'd die a happy woman if I got to finally see them play live together. About those of us in L.A. I had inquired about: Is it true that the only other So. Californian on this list has left to go to Alaska?! I thought "Elson" was from here also because he asked people from here to email once and I did but he never responded. I guess other L.A. people think they're too good to respond to me. Come out of the woodwork please. Thanks. I'm just curious. Please I know SOMEONE knows the answer to my "Waoh, waoh, ....waoh,waoh,waoh" chant at L42 concerts question! Please U.K. people. I'm not the only one who wishes to know what that's all about. Vince aka Synth also wants to know and he's the Home Page Maintainer! Help us out here! Loz, you must know this! Thanks to whoever posted about the lead singer for Madness. Now I know I'm not weird for thinking he looks like Mark King. I haven't really seen him recently but I've always thought he and Mark could be brothers. There's one expression in the "Our House" video that I thought was a total Mark expression also. Hopeful to get a response to my inquiries, Angel
