Giorgio Simoni ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V96 #9 From: GVermette @ aol.com Date: Thu, 11 Jan 1996 12:03:49 -0500 Hi Folks! Rolf wants to know.... >The demise of the L42 Instrumental >What's the deal? We get 5 instrumentals on their first effort,The Early >Tapes, 3 on their second , Level 42 and 2 on their third, The Pusuit Of >Accidents and then NONE!! You *might* say A Pharaoh's Dream comes close and >*Maybe* The Ape but that would be pushing it You're forgetting "Gresham Blues" from Staring at the Sun. The instrumentals disappeared along with the "old" Level 42 sound, one they were trying to re-capture on Forever Now. Apparently in a push to become more single-oriented, the longer songs, (anyone ever time "Starchild" or "Love Games", close to 8 minutes!), as well as the instrumentals were dropped from the scheme, (except live that is). >I've heard almost all of "Forever Now", but I have yet to hear "Learn to Say No". Is it >worth buying the CD for? Yes! Definitely! It's my favorite track on the Forever Now album! "Sunbed Song" is second, the two are very similar in sound and structure. I'm sorry I dissed Vanilla Ice, I didn't know there were so many fans out there. I prefer "Pressure" by Bowie/Queen better. Milli Vanilli was a very creative attempt at pop. If it weren't for Rob and Fab, the guys really doing the tracks could have been a huge success. I guess it's all in the image. -Greg Vermette (Bad Lyric - "I'm brave...but I'm chickensh*t" - "Hand in Pocket" - Alanis Morrisette) ------------------------------ Subject: rolfie and fritzes From: jotes @ t-online.de (jotes) Date: Thu, 11 Jan 96 16:19 +0100 hi non-fritzes and fritz! i think the guy from dresden is the only other krautie in this digest apart from me.. rolfie: you wrote kinda native german, where did you get it from..? the only thing is that it's nicer to say 'tschuess' than 'aufwiederhoeren' to someone quite familiar.. btw, some digests ago LOZ mentioned that it were the yanks who turned your marathon-bar into snickers. who is responsible then for our raider turned into twix??? takeo had a brilliant idea to produce stickers in coorporation with his dad. that reminds me to my idea some weeks ago, to make a special-digest-levelhead-edition of 42-stickers. i did not get a real reaction to that, but i think i'll get them done and tell you about the result, ok? i found my prince's trust video-tape yesterday. i promised someone to copy it for him but i cannot remember who it was (i had a harddisk-crash before xmas so i cannot read the older mails anymore). so, if you (or anyone) are still interested in a copy, just let me know.. tschuess, jotes (it's raining in berlin - but what is the rain that's falling in (west-)berlin compared to the rain that fell within..?) ------------------------------ Subject: Three Quick Questions From: Richard Smith Date: Thu, 11 Jan 1996 13:37:54 GMT 1. Anybody ever use the News Group: alt.music.level-42 ? 2. Anybody ever thought of starting a Level 42 Chat room where we could meet real time online? 3. Anybody know the facts about Mark's absailing down the outside of Hotels ???? TTFN Level 42 Lyric pinched from someone else: Water, Water everywhere. But not a drop to drink. The Bends FN+4 but who wrote this originaly ? ------------------------------ Subject: Ordering Discs Directly From Voiceprint From: John Edward Martin Shuford Date: Thu, 11 Jan 1996 10:27:25 -0800 (PST) Okay, if you're having trouble getting your discs from an online service, here is another couple of recommendations. First, you can always call up Tower Records in Picadilly Circus, London. They do international orders to the US, and you get a favorable conversion rate because you are using a charge card. If anyone wants that info, I'll post it. However, I suggest that we add it to the FAQ (Vince???) so that everyone knows how to get it. Second, and perhaps the best way for us to show our support of Level 42 is to order through Voiceprint directly. I have information on how to do that, which came in a little newsletter from Voiceprint called "On The Level". It was their first issue, and they had little interviews with Mark (for the new Forever Now), Mike (for his re-released version of Changes with the Fallen Angel demo), Boon (about Tin Man and his follow up which is already in the can), and Jakko (who has a couple of things out on Resurgence). The more we can show them directly that there is a market for L42 and related stuff, the more likely they are to press it up for us. Again, I will post that info on how to reach them if anyone wants it, but I think we should make it part of the FAQ. ------------------------------ Subject: The Solo L42 Stuff From: "J.S. Lohr" Date: Wed, 10 Jan 1996 16:31:35 -0500 (EST) As I mentioned in a previous post, I finally (after months of procrastination) picked up CD copies of Mark's solo album from '84 and Boon's solo album from recently. And if y'all don't mind I'm gonna rant and rave a teensy bit about the two: First, Mark's album. Interesting cover...simple, but, odd. Is that an eye on his hand? Anyway, my first reaction to it after putting in the CD player and hitting play was that I thought I'd accidentally put in a Spyro Gyra CD. "The Essential" is an excellent track - the bass playing is wonderful, but I wasn't expecting such a jazzy (modern jazz, that is) track...at least, that's what it sounds like to me. It has a very Jay Beckenstein-ish (Spyro Gyra) feel to it. Except for the last 7 minutes or so of the song...pure Mark King doing what Mark King does best. And for the life of me, I can't place where I've heard that quiet riff that he starts playing at about 12 minutes into the song...its driving me nuts! At first I thought it was "Dune Tune" but I proved myself wrong after listening to the first album again. It sounds like the bass line from another, more recent Level 42 song, but I can't place which. Its driving me crazy!! But, that solo near the end of the song is easy enough to place...now I know where that solo from the "jungle drums" joke in "Fait Accompli" comes from. Excellent bass playing! Too bad that doesn't continue throughout the rest of the album. "Clocks Go Forward" is ok, "I Feel Free" is really good but very out of place IMHO, "Pictures On the Wall" sounds like a lost B-side from the "Standing in the Light" days, as does "There is a Dog," though that sounds a little more "Pursuit of Accidents"-ish. Basically, I look at this album more as an "Essential" CD single with 4 bonus tracks more than an actual album. BTW, the bass playing was also extremely good (IMHO) on "There is a Dog," but I was expecting the whole album to be a bass playing feast and, where that's all concerned, I was slightly disappointed. On the other hand, the album was very good, it just wasn't what I expected. Now, Boon's album: what the hell was that! Now, I knew ahead of time that he did the lead singing on the album, but I was expecting something more along the lines of Mike Lindup-type high-pitched-castration vocals, but instead I got a lower budget, working class Chris Rea (which is sorta cool because I love Chris Rea - not literally, mind you...just his music...eh, never mind!) with maybe a dash of Roger Waters without the screaming. For the most part, he's not that bad a singer (IMHO). I won't go song by song, but the album has a nice rock feel to it - it at times reminded me a lot of Roger Waters (former Pink Floyd lead vocalist and bassist) later solo stuff, ala Radio K.A.O.S. The lyrics sucked hard, but if you're listening to an album just for the lyrics then you shouldn't be listening to music, you should be reading poetry. All in all, it was a really interesting and good album, but if you're looking for music that resembles Level 42 stuff you WON'T find it here. This album sounds about as Level 42 as a Tony Bennett album would...in other words, it doesn't. Applause to Boon, but I wouldn't quit my day job just yet if I were him...oh, wait, it IS his day job. Uhhh.... If you have the means, I highly recommend picking up both. They're well worth the cash... Just my $.02 worth. Thanks, folks! Toodles! ------------------------------ Subject: FN and FN+4 the Difference... From: BUNTON Date: Wed, 10 Jan 1996 15:22:06 -0500 Well guys, I have both of the FN releases. Personally I like the RCA version better than the FN+4 version by Resurgence. There are differences in the albums..well besides the obvious -2+4....the FN+4 has a different version of "Billys gone" ..ie: longer intro, different lyrics, so forth....Since I didn't have the RCA version of FN I only had the Blue cover single release of "All Over you" and there is no Horn section on the RCA FN..... later, Mark Harter mdharter @ indyvax.iupui.edu mdharter @ indyunix.iupui.edu http://www.iupui.edu/~mdharter The Mack Truck Homepage "Tired of Waiting..." ------------------------------ Subject: RE: Level42 Digest V96 #8 From: "Cohen Doug" Date: 10 Jan 1996 14:27:37 U hey there! this is my first posting...can anyone recommend other bands (perhaps not as well known) that would appeal to my level42 palette...I'm interested in the more "musical proficiency" side of level42. thanks. ------------------------------ Subject: Pilgrimage to JoeDaFlo's From: Richard Smith Date: Wed, 10 Jan 1996 15:51:19 GMT >Well, if anyone's interested in a bit of a kneesup, I plan on a pilgrimage >to the bar during a weekend in early April 96.
