I forgot.. I definitely agree with Kim. Mark King is a piece of work. He got a great grin, gorgeous eyes, great voice, & a sexy scar. Just look at him in the "Running the Family" and "Tracie" videos. What a doll. OK now I sound too mushy, so I'll stop. -Afua ------------------------------ From: "AFUA PRESTON" Organization: New York University Libraries Date: 19 Apr 95 09:15:39 EST Subject: Re: Level 42 Digest, #365 Hello I've just joined the digest this week. You have no idea how happy I am to know that there are still people who love and respect the music of Level 42. I just bought their greatest Video hits last year and it reminded me of just how great their music is. By the way when I got the Forever Now CD at an import store here in NY, it included the words to all of the songs. So some have the words and some don't I guess. My favorite Level 42 album/song? Boy that's hard. I guess it would have to be a tie between World Machine with my favourite song being "Leaving Me Now" and Forever Now with my favorite song being "Billy's Gone". I also love "My Father's Shoes" from the Guaranteed album and "To Be with You Again" from the Running in the Family album. It was my first opportunity to hear the boys views on their music. Real insightful and interesting. Now I feel as if I know them a little better then by just listening to them on my boom box. Thanks alot! ------------------------------ From: BobC971 @ aol.com Date: Wed, 19 Apr 1995 11:59:02 -0400 Subject: Misc... First, I'd like to thank Peter Hadley for reprinting that Blues and Soul feature. Quite liked it and was curious about Mark's reference to a song "The Creator.'' Am I missing something here?! A couple of other things: Me'Shell Ndell'Ocello (that's as close as I'm gonna come folks) cites our boy Mark as one of her primary influences as she graces the cover of this month's Bass Player Magazine saying: "I've always liked Mark King from Level 42. That's good, solid bass playing.'' Boy, who would have thought? Not like she plays like him or anything. Finally, it kinda looks like this Midge Ure-Carl Palmer-Mark King things is gonna happen. Paiste (cymbals) comes out with a newsletter every so often and a fresh one just came out featuring an interview with Carl Palmer and he says the project is a go. That's all for now, BobC ------------------------------ From: John Edward Martin Shuford Date: Wed, 19 Apr 1995 09:41:14 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Re: National Front King, "The Creator" First off, I suppose I must take the blame for bringing up that horrid "Mark as a Nazi" thing again. What does one look like, it was asked. Perhaps someone should have pointed that very thing out to the journalist who made that observation. Still, it seems pretty undeniable that Mark (especially in his earlier days with the plastered to the side hair and angry demeanor while slapping looked a bit the Aryan poster child). But my REAL POINT was how Mark resembles all these actors who play deviants. Personally, I think Mark would be a natural as an actor. He's got terrific presence and rapport with the camera, he sounds interesting (at least to my American ears) and he has those cold, piercing eyes (when he wants to give that look, anyway). He'd be a natch for American villanhood--how ironic is that??? Secondly, Jay, I saw that listing of "The Creator" in that issue of Blues & Soul when you sent it to me. WHAT'S UP WITH THAT??? I ache from the possibility that there is (sigh) yet another song we've not heard. However, my guess is this: the track they were talking about was "Kouyate," and the writer scribbled something down or misunderstood them, and didn't go back and check facts. But if that's the case, I can't think of what you'd call Kouyate besides "jazz-funk." Thoughts? ------------------------------ From: "Friesen, Alex" Date: Wed, 19 Apr 1995 14:46:49 -0500 Subject: Herr King's political lyrics Mark King menacing? I'm sorry, but I don't see that at all. In every video / photo / interview I've seen he's looked rather, well, non-menacing. And besides, he looks quite similar to a good friend of mine (also a bass player). As for blatant political statements, the only one I've ever noticed is the (well before it was trendy) environmental comment in the Chant Has Begun. Well, maybe Kouyate and Kansas City Milkman have slight overtones, but nothing terribly relevant to today's (or whenever the songs came out) political landscape. Am I missing something? > Finally: I have the complete lyrics of the "Forever Now" album from > the fan club, anyone interested ? Yes please. I was a tad annoyed that no lyrics were included with my overpriced import CD. I would love to have them. ...Alex... The tracks are in a different order, and it includes "I Sleep On My Heart", "Dream Crazy" and "Coup D'Etat." It does not have "Hot Water" and "The Chant Has Begun," which were on the LP version and the American CD release. Both versions were available in the States side-by-side for quite some time (I spoke to a friend of mine who worked in a store when I bought my copy, and he said they received a shipment of five copies from the same distributor in the same box, and they were mixed!) My version has the lyrics in the booklet, along with a photo of Wally Badarou (for what that's worth). I highly recommend getting THIS version if you can, and not the American version. Looking at the CD and packaging, it's a German pressing, and the number on the spine is 827 487-2 YH. I've been told, though I haven't verified it, that the sound quality is also far better on this version. Hope this helps. Take Care of Yourself!
