Re: Level 42 Digest, #274 re: Crockford Questions, Questions, Questions! Re: Questions, Questions, Questions! RitF--Worst Album?? Questions, Questions, Questions! Changes Ltd Edition ? ------------------------------ From: John Edward Martin Shuford Date: Thu, 12 Jan 1995 12:14:13 -0800 (PST) Subject: A Proper Introduction??? It appears as though my note last night was read by some of you already (good to hear from you again, David Leslie), and it looks as though I may see some old friends here. I can tell you a little more about my interests in L42. A group of us tried like hell to get RCA motivated to L42's musical potential in the US, but it just didn't work. Crockford was pretty helpful, Philippa Watson more helpful. Too bad, because Forever Now was the album that would have put them over the top here. So that probably is a giveaway as to my favorite album, isn't it. They did so many new (or relatively new to them) things on that album, all within the framework of Phil coming back to write and play. Real strings, more horns, mandolin, sitar (sp?), hammond organ, and new depths of playing and singing from Mark. Too good to be true, I thought. Favorite songs? Well, that's a toughie. I tend to like their more wandering songs like The Bends, Love In A Peaceful World, Man, and At This Great Distance, the ones which put you in a dramatically different place at the end from where you began. I think it's a good reflection of life itself. I'm scratching my head as to what else to add (because being in a big group sorta turns into one-upsmanship, or at least what you can bring to the group that is different than what others have to offer). I did recently write a final paper for one of my classes (I'm a graduate student in philosophy) on Hume's notion of our esteem for the rich and powerful by sympathy, and used Mark King as my example. The paper, entitled, Don't Bother Me (to emphasize comments Mark has made about people thinking they know anything about you by the image you project on stage or on TV), earned an A, and I had lots of fun in the process (which is surprising, because it was my last paper of finals). So, once again, L42 speaks to me and carries an enduring message. Or I just dig Mark's grooves; I can't think which it is! What is he still grubbing for $$$. Sorry for the wide-ass remark, but I feel that Mr. Crockford is a BIG reason why Level never achieved to the status it could have/should have. > Any news on the Live album ?? I apologize if some or all of these questions have been answered by others. Here we go: 1) What are the tracks on the second CD single of Love In A Peaceful World (not the one with The Bends and Heart on the Line, but on the one with the rereleased material)? 2) Was Time Will Heal ever released? If so, on what form of release? 3) On any of the Overtime releases, is there a track or remixed entitled Royal One? 4) Any word from Crockford as to audio or video release of the final show(s)? 5) Who was the drummer during the final tour (one of Barnacle's friends, I believe)? 6) What was the composition of that band? Specifically, were their any backup singers, or was it just Mark, Mike, Jakko, Gary Barnacle, John Thirkell, and drummer du jour? 7) Why did they decide to tour Japan? Because it was the only other place where Forever Now charted? That's it for now. If I can ever figure out how to get it imported, I'll post the discography I've compiled over the years. Someone may have a more comprehensive one. Mine lists approximately 300 releases (maybe more). I'd love to compare with others of you, because I'm really striving for completeness. I was curious to this too, but maybe it's a sure fire way to break up, after all the ill-formed Jimmy Page/David Coverboy opened their " world tour " there also, after a couple of dates...broken up. Actually, I'll remain anonymous this time (is that even possible on this thing?). Just wanted to reply in public to a comment made recently by a fellow digest memeber; the comment was that Running in the Family was this person's least favorite of L42's works, probably because of it's more poppish sound. No disrespect to this person's view; I just wanted to tip the scale back in the other direction by saying that I really like L42's pop-side, just as much as I appreciate their earlier works. I think their poppier albums--like RitF and Guaranteed--demonstrate yet another facet of this group's diverse talents. Thanks for reading. ------------------------------ From: lazlo @ RT66.com (Lazlo Nibble) Date: Thu, 12 Jan 1995 22:58:02 -0700 (MST) Subject: Questions, Questions, Questions! A friend of mine mentioned that in the re-release of Changes, there's a limited edition containing a demo version of Fallen Angel. Is this true and has anybody bought this CD and have some info about it, like catalogue number ? I'm now waiting for a copy of the Spirit Is Free 12", I hope the Ext.Vers is good, apparently it differs from the CD single, which I haven't got (But I will). -- e-mail: love @ iar.se Murphy's laws on technology: An expert is one who knows more and more about less and less until he knows absolutely everything about nothing.
