Re: Level 42 Digest, #325 ------------------------------ From: Stooge @ aol.com Date: Sun, 5 Mar 1995 22:06:40 -0500 Subject: Where's the album I just subscribed to this list, but have been a fan of Level42 for about 6 years. This past June I was vacationing in England where I discovered their new album "Forever Now". I have been looking for the album in the States ever since i returned home and haven't been able to find it. Does any othere hardcore fan out there know the reason why it isn't released in America? Although I haven't purchased the album in the U.S., I did get it through a CD importer by mail. I also have a theory why Level42 has never caught on in the states like they have in Europe. The last time they toured in America they were the opening band for Madonna...and anyone that goes to a Madonna concert probably doesn't have the taste to appreciate Level42! ------------------------------ From: John Edward Martin Shuford Date: Mon, 6 Mar 1995 00:51:26 -0800 (PST) Subject: Holy Grail, Holy Cow, It's CDNow! For anyone who has not checked out cdnow.com, it's a pretty neat little service. The prices are fairly reasonable (except for imported videos), and they seem to deal extensively in bootlegs (or "imports" as they loosely refer to them). Alas, their L42 selection is sadly lacking, with the exception of Guaranteed Live and The White Funky. Still, it's a fun place to check out (although I have no idea who thought of those musical connections between groups--sometimes they're pretty good, but sometime's you're just left scratching your head). Some questions here, and some answers (if you don't mind): 1) Michael Brooks--do you know the track listings on the All Over You 12"? If you can find out for me, I may have you pick up a couple or three copies of each and send them over here. Let me know. 2) Does anyone have a copy, either CD or VHS of the Prince's Trust 1989 show? Does anyone know if L42 was involved in the 1988 or 1990 shows? 3) Can anyone on the other side of the pond please explain to me that whole L42/furry dice/XR3i/Thatcher's Britain thing is? How in the world did L42 get lumped into that picture--just unfortunate historical timing? Were they really viewed as being sort of a cheesy pop band over there and lambasted in the press? 4) Does anyone have the sixth issue of Q, with Michael Jackson on the cover? There is a story on L42, and I have never been able to make out the head from that shrunken "cover" in the back issues section of Q. Any and all responses are appreciated. ------------------------------ From: eric (Eric J. Hansen) Date: Mon, 6 Mar 95 9:36:29 EST Subject: Articles about the band, et al. Levelheads, For those of you who don't know, there are currently three articles on Level 42 at the anonymous ftp site here: enterprise.bih.harvard.edu:pub/level42/articles. I mention this because I keep seeing posts saying "that article in "... If anyone wants to spend an hour or so typing in these other articles in, it would be moucho appreciated! Imagine having an archive of all (well, most) L42-related articles *on-line*! BTW - Vince, I know the L42 page has a link to the ftp site, but you might also consider linking these articles directly. Oh, and lately, there have also been _numerous_ subscription requests coming from the web page. Yeah!!! (actually, probably all requests have come from the page since I haven't posted a "blurb" on rec.music.info for a while...) Lastly, for the poor folks on "bounce", I apologize for continued garbage coming your way. Hello, My name is Sahar and I just joined the mailing list a couple of minutes ago. While I like L42 very much, I must admit that they are not my favorite band. I do, however, think that "Lessons In Love" and "Something About You" are 2 wonderful songs. My favorite music is European from the 70's thru what is popular and on the charts of today. My emphasis is on 80's music. Thus, L42 is a perfect example of a great 80's Euro band. My other favorites include Duran Duran, A-HA, ABBA, Culture Club, WHAM!, Spandau Ballet, Erasure, OMD, Tears For Fears, and Culture Beat (clearly, the most current). Another top band is King. I know I am not the only King fan out there. If any of the L42 subscribers like this band or would like to become familiar with it, that would be great. King was formed in the early 80's by four young Brits. Its chief songwriter was also its lead singer, Paul King. The band peaked in 1985 with its #2 album, Steps In Time. The album featured the band's biggest hit single, "Love And Pride." Another notable member of King was its temporary drummer, Adrian Lillywhite. He is the brother of mega-producer Steve Lillywhite. Adrian also played with the Members, another great English band. Originally a punk band, the Members had their biggest hit with the more poppish single, "Working Girl." That came off their last album, 1983's Uprhythm Downbeat. But back to King. As far as I know, the band put out a second album in 1986. That album contained the top hit, "Alone Without You." After breaking up in 1987, the members went their separate ways. Paul King had 2 hits in Europe, the biggest of which was "Follow My Heart." He later joined the new MTV Europe and has since been one of the network's top VJ's. King's music can best be described as cross referenced 80's British pop. Their songs contain elements of pop, disco, loud guitars, piano, and some tribal beats. They can easily be identified by their happy-go-lucky choice of melodies and lyrics. Other notable songs are "I Wear My Soul On My Boots," "Like A Fish Out Of The Water," "I Kissed The Spikey Fridge." As their material is hard to come by in Europe, and even tougher to find in the U.S., Oglio Records recently released a re-issue of "Steps In Time." The new album version contains all of the tracks from the original album, plus 8 tracks never before available on CD. Four of those eight tracks are new versions of the band's best songs. There are remixes for "Love And Pride," "Like A Fish Out Of The Water," and one other song which I can't remember. There is also a reprise of "I Wear My Soul On My Boots." The disc itself is great because it contains an imprinted color picture of the band. If you like great pop and ballads with an interesting twist in the lyrical department, check out King. Adios, amigos. There was a ton of 7 inch and 12 inch vinyls and some very rare stuff. For example: Thunderthumbs And The Toetseman 12 inch worth 30 pounds An album that featured Mark and Phil as the Rythm Section that was 30 pounds. Love Meeting Love 12 inch for 40 pounds Love Games for 20 pounds The Chinese Way which I bought with the original cover The Sun Goes Down with the original cover Micro Kid I could go on and on....there was a cd single of Its Over with 4 tracks including Physical presence live and also the video of Its Over on the same CD...that was going for 20 pounds as well. There was very little live stuff....The White Funky was the only one about which was going for 13 pounds. A lot of the sellers were surprised that no bootlegs from the last tour had appeared. A friend bought the Micro Kid 12 inch which also had Turn It On on the B side and then he got the gem of the day...... Are You Hearing What I Hear extended remix on 12 inch vinyl with The Return Of The Handsome Rugged Man on the B-side. This track is amazing!!!!! I have copied these onto tape so if people want them let me know. I nearly forgot....Influences on vinyl is now worth 30 pounds and there were copies of I Fell Free on 7 inch and 12 inch at very high prices.....you kinda kick yourself for not buying these things first time round!! ------------------------------ From: LEEMD @ PLU.edu Date: Mon, 06 Mar 1995 10:54:55 -0800 (PST) Subject: Introduction Greetings all, My name is Mark Lee.
