I was just wondering if anyone knew who he was because I already did. You see, my singing mother is touring the country with him as we type. You were right about the Univ. of Mississippi. As everyone reads this she will be in New Orleans, where L42 filmed a few videos! It is true that El Vez puts on a good show. He not only does Elvis covers but also semi-parodies of other songs with a Mexican theme. Sorry you missed his show at Lounge AX in Chicago on Aug. 16. Level heads should check him out. He's on his way to Louisiana, Texas, Arizona and California soon! To Pat Flanagan: Yes, it was you in Digest #19 that made the comment about my post. To Amanda: Yes! Yes! Yes! Command performance time! I never got to see them and I could die happy if I could ever. Great idea, even if it was thought of in a state of disarray. To Eric: Ever think of silkscreening shirts? My grandfather silkscreened some L42 designs (of the "A Physical Presence" L42 logo) and they came out just great! Sorry, I couldn't tell you wether or not it's illegal but I've been wearing mine for years. To anyone who could provide an explanation: After hearing so much ABOUT Jamiroquai, I wanted to see if I could find any CDs of theirs at a used record store. To my amusement I found them in the Techno Compilations bin. Huh? Are they really techno or does the store I went to not listen to any of the CDs they sell? I didn't listen to them because they were packaged so that I couldn't open them without a crowbar and I was afraid to just buy for fear of techno which I don't generally enjoy. So...??? I also wanted to say that I heard Level in Hughes Supermarket in Burbank yesterday. It was "Something About You" of course. Let's just say it was a surprisingly happy grocery shopping experience! I, too, am a bass player on the list. (My guess is you're going to find a lot of us out there!) Tips on playing like Mark: 1) Get strings like his. I use Trace Elliot nickel plated, guages .035, .055, .075 and .095. Mark has his own signature-series of Trace Elliots, which are .03, .05, .07 and .09, but I haven't been able to find them in any stores. 2) Work on your scales and modes, particularly mixolydian E. (I could be wrong here, 'cos it's been a while since music theory.) Mixolydian E is basically an E-major scale except with a D-natural (instead of D-sharp). The band uses it in a LOT of their stuff, particularly the older stuff. Once you get those notes down, you can kind of just goof around to songs like "Love Games." But, of course, watch out for accidentals. 3) Good call in yesterday's digest about muffling the strings with your left hand. Try slapping with your thumb and then muffling the sound quickly with your left hand. Alternate the two back and forth a bunch of time, and get faster and faster as you go. 4) Practice bending your strings (i.e., pushing them up and down on your fret board as you hold a particular note). This provides a vibrato which Mark uses a lot on songs. But you need to practice not over-doing it, or else your notes will start to slip into the next highest half-step (and then could sound lousy). Or maybe you want to over-do it. I don't know. Cheers! Funny, because personally, I was doodling with using L42 samples in my own music. Blasphemy, you say? Well, yeah, but 1) The band NO LONGER EXISTS and 2) If I get sued, at least I get a chance to meet them. I wrote a song, as yet untitled, but it uses part of the intro section of "Physical Presence." When I get done with at least part of it, I'll put it on my WWW page. I've also doodled with using the intro to "The Sun Goes Down." Speaking of which, if you want to hear some of my other stuff, go to http://ucs.usc.edu/~ertrinid/themusic.htm/ Elson ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #25 From: fsteama @ macline.co.uk (Mike Goode/Smiljka Surla) Date: Tue, 12 Sep 1995 23:10:27 +0000 T-shirts are a great idea. As a designer, I'd be prepared to sort something out design-wise. Also, I have a friend who designs and produces quality t-shirts - I guess I could rope him in somehow. Before we go any further however we have to sort some things out: 1) How many people would actually be prepared to buy a shirt? If we go ahead and print these up, somebody is gonna have to lay out some money in advance. 2) The decision to purchase will obviously be influenced by the design. We need to establish what the most popular L42 design/motif/symbol is. 3) My gut feeling is that one of the old logos would be best (or possibly a pictorial element from one of the old album covers). Most people who subscribe to the digest are on a nostalgia trip (lets face it, L42 are a bit of a Norwegian Blue these days) which tends to count out a 'new' logo. 4) A good idea though, is to personalise the shirt (ie for digest subscribers). We will need the exact words so that it doesn't sound stupid (there is a danger of it being something of an L42 anorak accessory if we're not careful). 5) XL, XXL, black, white, pink with yellow stripes? These things needs to be decided! 6) And what about cost? On which side of the pond will they be produced - this will have some effect on the final cost. Where are most of the subscribers - in the US or the UK? Would US subscribers be prepared to fork out a little more to have them sent over. Likewise for UK subscribers if they be printed in the US... 7) Here's an good one... quality. You want cheap? You get cheap. You want quality... you pay a little more. I plump for the latter. I'd want my shirt to last. I guess that we need to run a poll. If we get a large response, we go for it. If not, we forget it. I'll start getting some costs together on producing some quality shirts here in the UK (not forgetting postage costs to the states). Maybe someone could do likewise in the US? PS. The problem of copyright is a very real one. The old logos are probably owned by the record companies, but hey... lets cross that bridge if, and when, we get to it.
