I listen to a lot of house music, so I picked up a new CD from 'The Bucketheads' a couple of DJ's from New York(Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez, etc.) They have 'written', or mixed rather, a song called 'Time and Space'... Of course this phrase from a beloved song we all know as 'Starchild'... They have sampled the entire first chorus as the melody in their mix. It's Level 42 groove, a bit slowed down, with a house beat. Pretty funky. Maybe I could put together a sample for the Level 42 Home Page. :) The liner notes in the CD say the authors are: (Kenny Gonzalez, W. Badarou, P. Gould, M. King, K-Dope, ASCAP/EMI Blackwood Music Inc. BMI) "Starchild" performed by Level 42 used under license from Polydor Ltd. If anyone's interested in getting this CD, let me know. I have a feeling it's a regional/local release in the LA area only. I must say, I was waiting for someone to sample Level 42's grooves into club music. It happened, and it works. VERY well... (!) I'm curious to know >how many of us on the mailing list are actually bass players. Do any >of you bass players have tips on playing like Mark? I Practice a little bit of bass, (although not much since I came to America) and I'm looking to buy a new Bass within the next few weeks. One or two tips I could recommend, and Rob Steen might agree, is to start with your strings, I used Superwound's Piano String Designed roundwounds with these gauges G .030, D .050, A .070 and E .090. also watching "Live at wembley" is VERY helpful, though I highly recommend listening to "A Physical Prescence" you'll learn faster watching King Mark at work. One thing I've found is when slapping a few riffs focus more on damping with your left hand and using your right forearm (as opposed to just your thumb) I'm a little rusty so try these out first and see... Question: Are there any copies of the legendary "Strategy" Album over here..?? "..Love is the ship we all hope to steer..." I wonder if the 'strange' folks at = Newbury Comics (Boston) would know. I think it'd be ok to make your own = T's especially since the band is no longer an entity. I would _love_ to have a shirt; I own absolutely no paraphernalia of theirs, since I've never seen them in concert. Asking about printing shirts may be a good excuse/reason to write Mike Lindup that letter we've been talking about forever. If Mike Brooks still has the address, I say we write Lindup a letter and see what _he_ thinks of the idea. That way we're paying homage and establishing contact in one fell swoop. What do you guys think? Anyone want to suggest ideas for a cool > shirt design?! Lemme know if there's interest! This is a great idea. If you go ahead and print some, you have a definite buyer here! Why not go for a list shirt? Since your domain is worldmachine.com, you could lift the nut & bolt illustration from World Machine's cover as the main theme, with 'Level 42' above and 'Digest' below. The WWW address underneath would finish it off nicely. But, hey, at least you have the Sisa Mix. :) ------- >Polydor and RCA should have scads and scads of money left >over from totally not promoting Level 42 in any reasonable >manner. I wonder >who did most of the lyrics-George or Mark? If I'm not mistaken, George Green wrote the entire lyric. Or, at least it seems like a typical George Green lyric. I, for one, think he's a damn good lyricist for writing very visual songs. He tends to use very, for lack of a better word, flowery writing (not meant as a slam) that is a step or two above the typical "all I wanna do is zooma zoom zoom in da boom boom" lyrics we here on the radio. I know that I know (boy, that phrase sounds logical) at least five hit songs he's been written lyrics for, but the names are slipping my mind, save "Human Wheels" by John Mellencamp. I'd love to have a lyric-writing conversation with the guy, personally. ------- Welcome back, BobC! A friend of mine - almost as stupidly devoted to SD as I am to L42 - is currently on it, but considering canceling as he is "getting sick of too many 'what's your favourite song' messages". Sean, you say that you think "Man" is >this cautionary tale of a businessman who takes life to seriously I've often wondered if this song was not about / to Phil Gould. Just my imagination working overtime, or does anybody have this same thought? I often kick myself for not buying paraphernalia at the two L42 shows I've been to. Eric - I encourage you to follow up your shirt idea. ...Alex... "I remember a line of women all in white, the laughter and the steel bands at night"
