I'm curious to know > how many of us on the mailing list are actually bass players. Do any > of you bass players have tips on playing like Mark? Yes, I used to play bass. To play like Mark, do plenty of finger exercises, build up good callouses (by playing til you bleed), and work HARD on your timing. I found that synchronizing your left and right hands was the hardest thing while playing fast. Usually, my right hand would be striking the note just before my left hand would depress the string. You'll need a bit of ambidexterity to do it well. Good luck! >...Pat's comment about my being put off about the LFT/L42 name controversy: Me? Which Pat? I don't recall bringing that up. I say we call 'em Lev42, myself. :D >Henpecked Horns You can really connect L42 to a ton of bands through these guys, especially Gary Barnacle, who's still one of the most in-demand session sax players in Europe. John Thirkell has some fun ones, too, like Swing Out Sister. He resides in LA and tours the country. He was recently at (at least I think) in the University of Mississippi's 1st Annual Elvis Conference. There they discussed Elvis' influence on music and culture. Anyway, Senor Vez does covers of Elvis songs in espanol. He dresses like the Elvis of the later years but he lacks the girth of the king. From what I heard, he puts on a good show. For Elson: The Brand New Heavies bass player is awesome and to be grouped with Jan Kincaid is sweeter! Their first album grooves hard and I haven't gotten tired of listening to it. For anyone who would know: I bought the cd single of Something About You 5 years ago. Well, on this single, the SAY video is on it. Do you think I could view it on a CD ROM? Schivering in Schicago (I will be soon)...Ricah. ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #23 From: PLFlanagan @ aol.com Date: Sat, 9 Sep 1995 12:56:28 -0400 In a message dated 95-09-07 06:59:48 EDT, Alex Friesen writed: >the Kevin Bacon game Yes, it's exactly like the Phil Collins-Dave Weckl connection you made. The game goes like this. One person names a movie actor/actress. You must then connect that actor/actress to Kevin Bacon via movies (TV show connections -- e.g. Michael J. Fox-Michael Gross/Family Ties, Michael Gross-Kevin Bacon/Tremors -- are considered poor form and a very last resort for the desparate). Easy example: Brooke Shields Brooke Shields-Susan Sarandon (Pretty Baby) Susan Sarandon-Kevin Costner (Bull Durham) Kevin Costner-Kevin Bacon (JFK) Have fun, and don't bet too much money in this game. It's Connie Lee, at the wheel of her Shark DeVille!" (How many other pumpin' songs have you heard with the word YOWEE in them, I ask?) [There may be a Steely Dan/Donald Fagen mailing list... I used to be on one, but unsubscribed because the formatting of the digest was really whack - lots of rejected MAILER-DAEMON messages and unedited headers - tough to wade through to get to the text. I would be curious to know whether or not this list is still around though (anyone?!). -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #23 From: apaulet @ clemson.edu (Amanda P.) Date: Sun, 10 Sep 1995 16:56:23 -0400 I know, I know, it's a Friday night and I shouldn't be in this damn lab, but when you're stuck in said lab, depressed as all hell over Virginia Tech's _inexcusable_ loss to Boston College, and things look otherwise bleak, you're prone to crazy ideas. Now tell me if this doesn't sound crazy enough to work The way I figure it, Polydor and RCA should have scads and scads of money left over from totally not promoting Level 42 in any reasonable manner. Now, don't you think they could use that money, get the boys back together, and treat us, their obviously 200 or so most loyal fans, to a command performance. And to compensate for our mental anguish through the years, the venue can be at the home of the list Level-head living in the most obscure place [Sierra Leone, perhaps? Hands up everyone who's been to Sierra Leone.], and they fly us all there to join them. I like it. Who's with me...? okay fine. i'll shut up and go home now. Later, -Amanda Amanda K. "My Fathers Shoes" is just a great short story. "A Kinder Eye" is very visual and has a great line in it-"Across the page the moving hand of history bleeds...For a kinder eye to see us, not as we are, but as we dream" The credit shows Mark King and George Green. I wonder who did most of the lyrics-George or Mark? Heaven in My Hands is inspired, and "Man" seems to be this cautionary tale of a businessman who takes life to seriously. Annnyway, I think their writing got better as time went on. Later. Anyway, the response here in Hey, whe I was 17 and in a National league winning U20's volleyball team here in the UK, we used to train whilst listening to Level42 (training 5 days a week, 4 hours a day for 300 days a year, for 4 years!!), then we'd go see them down at Portsmouth Guidlhall when they first started touring. Those were the days :) It's nice to know that someone else has had a similar experience. I know there are still quite a few of you that are interested in acquiring these tapes. My suggestion to you is to Email me at BobC971 @ aol.com. You'll receive information about the tapes and the quality and so on. I'm putting them back on the market for a little while...not sure how long, so I wouldn't put off dropping me a line for too long :) At any rate, I'd like to take this time out to publically thank my girlfriend Stacy for her efforts in trying to find me Level 42 stuff while she was in England over the last two weeks...She returned with all this cool stuff...most of which I had on cassette, but not CD... included in my goodies were DJ versions of All Over You and Love in A Peaceful World, the Overtime single with three live songs, and a fairly rare CD Maxi Single of Running IN The family that includes Dream Crazy... But the best thing she got me was an EXTREMELY rare CD Video of It's Over. Included on this are the remix of It's Over, the Dave O Remix of RITF, Physical Presence (Live) and the video itself...VERY COOL! What a gal! That's my second CDV. I also have the one for Something About You. Finally...I think I have a cool idea...I'm thinking about opening up a Q&A for the Levelheads here to Danny Blume - the guy who played guitar on Forever Now... You can ask all the questions about Mark's studio and stuff like that. Danny's a good guy. I haven't asked him if he'll do it, but (pardon the pun) but I don't think he's learned to say no :) You guys can send me the questions at the above address and I'll forward to him and publish his answers here in coming editions of the digest. What do you think? Please let me know. Nice to be back all. Keep it Level. BobC ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #23 From: "Eric J. Hansen" Date: Sun, 10 Sep 1995 23:42:10 -0400 (EDT) Hey gang, I'm just **dying** to have a Level 42 shirt. If I can't get one (likely), I am thinking of having some printed up and making them available for sale to the list. Any idea if this is "legal"? That is, can someone just print up some shirts with a band's name and sell them? Assuming I went ahead with this, though, would anyone be interested? Anyone want to suggest ideas for a cool shirt design?! Lemme know if there's interest! Over&out! -Eric
