I'm curious to know how many of us on the mailing list are actually bass players. Do any of you bass players have tips on playing like Mark? Paul ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #20 From: huwmill @ cix.compulink.co.uk (Huw Millington) Date: Thu, 7 Sep 95 19:34 BST-1 Cliff, I have a couple of 'bootleg' tapes: A true bootleg tapc from a 1985 tour. Audio quality is poor, although probably taken from the mixing desk as opposed to an open mic. It has 'Chinese way' 'Love games', 'The machine stops' 'Turn it on' 'Kansas city milkman' 'Heathrow' 'Leaving me now' 'Chant...' 'Micro kid' 'The sun goes down' 'Something about you' A recording of the same concert as the 1986 Live at Wembley video, but as transmitted on BBC radio 1. This has a slightly differtent set of tracks AFAIK, although without listening to it again I cannot list them. Quality is reasonable. I concur, and they are astounding live too. If you like them then you should give Roy Ayers a listen to as well, as I have been told by a source inside FreakPower that most of the basslines on that album are plagaurised from Roy's stuff. :) Dave in London 'Follow Me, to the end of the Earth, Follow Me, before it all breaks down' -- IGotAn @ omBomb.demon.co.uk | WeirdGuy @ cix.compulink.co.uk =%^) Hit them in the face, with a Funky Bass, For a Happy Smiling race. ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #20 From: Bassette Date: Thu, 7 Sep 1995 18:13:59 +0100 (WET DST) Hi on the best level Ok first of all I'm glad to hear of all of you again. I also just realized that what I see on my AOL screen while typing is not how it comes out on the digest. This was especially noticeable on the quotes. Sorry for the confusion. -Rolf ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #20 From: "Friesen, Alex" Date: Wed, 06 Sep 1995 14:58:25 -0500 Okay, okay, no more Chinese Way already! I'm sorry I brought it up again, Amanda. Let's talk ballads for Jon30869. Why Are You Leaving. Hours By The Window. And the inimitable It's Over. What do these songs have in common (besides generally great writing/playing)? Answer: if you're feeling a tad depressed you are well advised to remove all weaponry and sharp objects from the room before listening. Last bad breakup I had, the first tune I put on was It's Over. This was a mistake. Cheered up I was not. Happiness did not overwhelm me. ...Alex... I think it's a "low price" video so should only be about 7 pounds. If you look very carefully you can see me in the audience. This was a great gig as the Town & Country Club was a relatively small standing only venue. Chris Williams ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #20 From: LittleHalo @ aol.com Date: Thu, 7 Sep 1995 00:12:00 -0400 Hi everyone, In regards to Pat's comment about my being put off about the LFT/L42 name controversy: "Jeez, on to the next one." If you really felt that way, why didn't you just do what you said and not make the effort to copy my quote and comment on it in the Digest? If you can't say something nice..... Regarding Joel from Atlanta's request for sources to fill in the gaps on our L42 collections, I had a message in a previous Digest saying that I had obtained "Forever Now" directly from RCA for FREE. We called and they sent it to my home. The number and address is: 071-973-0011 RCA/BMG Records UK Limited Bedford House 69 79 Fulham High Street London, England SW6 3JW Hope I helped someone out. Bye for(ever) now, Angel ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #20 From: "Eric J. Hansen" Date: Thu, 7 Sep 1995 23:59:32 -0400 (EDT) Waaddduupppp?! Ok, continuing the Kevin Bacon game (in order to "justify" this posting), I'll state that The Henpecked Horns (John Thirkell and Gary Barnacle, a several- album studio horn section for Level 42) were featured on Jamiroquai's first album, "Emergency on Planet Earth." Anyways... So I saw Jamiroquai at Axis Nightclub on Lansdowne St. in Boston, MA this past Tuesday. I've been thinking pretty hard about it since then, and I honestly can't think of a better show that I've seem. In brief, they were flat out amazing. They played a show of about 13 songs, featuring their standard drummer, guitarist, keyboardist, bassist (yes, he was great), digeridooist and of course Mr. Jay Kay himself. Also on tour is a three-piece horn section (flute/sax, trumpet and trombone) that was great, a percussionist and also a very talented DJ that scratched throughout the show. Curiously, there were numerous flute, sax and trumpet solos, but not really much of any keyboard, bass or guitar solos. The first encore was a lengthy digeridoo and turntable/scratch solo that was also pretty unique. I had never seen a DJ playing with a band - or not at least with one as talented and "legit" as Jamiroquai. I have to admit that it added a unique and positive element that raised the level of the performance. All of their songs live were pretty similar to studio versions - or at least nothing really outlandishly different. They were really outstanding, however, in their performance. The band was altogether tight and coherent, with consistently good bridges between songs. There was also quite a bit of clowning around on stage, which included JK dancing about randomly, chatting with the audience, and even letting three girls from the audience attempt to sing an entire song (I forgot which one - they were terrible!) Maybe it was because we were *right* up front, but I felt like this was a very "personable" show - one where the audience communicated with and felt close to the band on stage. Jamiroquai seem to have alot of support in Boston (the show sold out), and JK thanked the audience at the end of the show for being so enthusiastic. He also mentioned that they haven't had all that great of a response in other areas (of the U.S., I gather), and thus it was particularly appreciated. And in response to Elson's comment from digest 14: > [...] I heard from many people that Jamiroquai sucks in concert. > One guy said that the sound mix was lousy and some others attribute it to > the fact that Jason Kay likes to get stoned before every gig. I heard their > didgeridoo player gets more applause than him. Well it is definitely the case that JK, as well as most of the Jamiroquai, likes to get stoned. Whether or not he did before the show I don't know, but they passed around a joint _during_ the gig. In fact, they even appealed to the audience for "donations" stating that they had "run out of weed" (and I think there were a number of people that ended up being "charitable"). While I *don't* think the Level 42 List is the forum to discuss drugs or their effect on musical performance, I will state that I don't think it impaired this band's ability to put on a smokin' show (no pun intended). Without reservation, I would recommended seeing these guys in concert. I also have to admit that, while it would be a terrible travesty, it is conceivable that Jamiroquai's fate in the U.S. will follow Level 42's. Does anyone have any empirical evidence of their popularity here? Hopefully this won't be their first and last U.S. tour!!! (But if it is, at least I saw 'em!!!) Anyways, I certainly got my $14 worth - I would have paid twice that if I knew how good they were going to be. -Eric ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #20 From: Rack1SPC @ aol.com Date: Thu, 7 Sep 1995 23:41:52 -0400 Still recovering from our Labor Day party. It's still true that Level 42 once played reels in multitudes of new fans on the spot. We had the speakers cranked up outside by the Basketball and volleyball court and I devoted a good 2hrs straight mixing different versions of the band-Mr. Pink, Follow Me, Dune Tune, Heaven in My Hands..., and so on. Theres just something about spiking a volleyball to Heaven... Anyway, the response here in good ole Cincy was-"Who are these guys?", are they a new group or something? That song really kicks (Mr. Pink)! Mark Twain was right-"If the world were to end I'd want to be in Cincinnati because it would end there ten years later!" On Average White Band-personally I like "Work to Do" on that album, crank that up and listen to that bass line! Also Eric, when I was livin' in Beantown there was a band called 3rd Estate that played a good worldbeat funk-style of music. I saw them a number of times at Nightstage (now defunct) and TT the Bears. Check them out if ya get a chance. Later 42424242424242424242424242424242SEAN
