How about posters or pics ... Is there any place we can still pick up some L42 memorabilia? Sincerely, Rob Khurana Ottawa, Canada [Have you looked for "Level Best"? I can't imagine it would be too hard to find, _even_ in Canada... -Eric ;-) ] ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #17 From: PLFlanagan @ aol.com Date: Mon, 4 Sep 1995 11:08:53 -0400 Quote and response: > I have a set of photos which I took of L42 etc....!!Scan them!! Amen, brotha. Scan all them photos from everyone and put them up. > It was back in Mark's long, black trenchcoat days. 1986 was EVERYONE'S long, black trenchcoat days. :D > I also bootlegged the Toad's Place show. Tape, anyone? Is it good? > I don't like Chinese Way, because it's like a broken record. Over and over and over. There ya' go. Good description. Except you forgot to say something about the terribly twee lyrics. > pretentious and purist (re: chinese way squabbling) I've been called worse. :D > Anyway, has anyone else seen that episode of SNL? I've never seen it rerun. Nope, I've never seen it rerun, either. Unfortunately, that was during one of SNL's extremely low quality periods (much like the one they're going through these days). >I'm sorry that you are of the kind that stops liking a song just because you've heard it a lot. Oh, not at all. I can't tell you the thousands of times I've heard Something About You, Leaving Me Now, Seven Years, Take A Look, Children Say, or any of my other favorites of theirs. I thought it was horrific from the first listen. It didn't even grow on me. But I think some people are missing the point. By complaining about a song, we aren't slighting the band. All quality bands have their classics, and their unfortunate mistakes. Fans will always debate which songs fall into which categories. This is just a discussion of which songs people like and dislike. I'm certainly not taking it as seriously as, apparently, some are. > How is one able to get the Remixes album with "Take A Look" on it. I got it (w/o TAL) on import from the Virgin Megastore so its surely not an American mishap is it? It's at my local Best Buys store, and I've seen it around at a few record stores. It's not really that uncommon in the States, so far as I've seen. > Anyway, I was just kind of put off by your desire to make everyone here conform... Jeez, on to the next one. > Astronauts and Heretics (Thomas Dolby) THERE'S an underappreciated classic album! What a lyric to start an album off with: "I wouldn't normally go bowling, on a Friday morning in New Orleans." (Friday? I'm going from memory here.) Excellent, excellent album. Everyone get it, if you can find it. >Dolby has produced Prefab Sprout, who's drummer Neil Conti(?) briefly played with our Level headed lads after Phil Gould left (the first time). Whoa, good connection! That's like playing the Kevin Bacon game. (Anyone who's not familiar with the KB game, email me and I'll send you the directions -- it's a hoot). That's all, sorry to stretch out the length of this digest. Forgive me if you are already aware of this information. For those of you in the United States that have trouble locating Level 42 on compact disk, there is a mail order/music import business in Luthersville, MD that has a fantastic Level 42 source. I have aquired almost every Level 42 CD in my collection from them. They are very nice people. Audiophile Imports (410) 628-7601 V (410) 628-1948 F P.O. Box 4801 Lutherville, MD 21094 Let me know if you have any problems with these people. And while we are at it, does anyone else out there have any good tips on where our fellow fans can fill the gaps in their Level 42 collections?? Cheers! Joel Atlanta, GA. USA [This has been my "source" for mail-order LFT, er... I mean L42 imports as well. I second the recommendation. -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #17 From: Kim Ivey Date: Mon, 4 Sep 1995 12:52:20 -0600 (MDT) Recently I joined one of the generic CD clubs adverised in magazines like T.V guide, and decided to purchase Paul McCartney's Greatest hits CD "ALL THE BEST". I've always been a big fan of the stuff he did in the seventies. Although, homeboys lyric writing is pretty bad, he always managed to write really catchy meoldies ( I'm not too knowledgeable about Beatles lore, but I get a feeling that John wrote most of the lyrics for the songs he and Paul collaborated on, and Paul concentrated more on the musical part of the tunes ... I say this because John's solo stuff always had interesting, introspective lyrics, but they all sounded the same musically; but since this is neither the Beatles, John Lennon, or Paul McCartney digest ... let me get back to my point ...). Anyway, I recently found out Paul played bass, and that he's considered one of the best bass players in the business. Now that Mr. King has heightened my awareness of what good bass playing is, I have figured out what I liked so much about Pauls music. Songs such as "LET EM' IN" , "SILLY LOVE SONGS", "COMING UP", and "GOODNIGHT TONIGHT" are driven by exceptional bass lines. Especially Goodnight Tonight, where Paul basically goes off! Moreover, I'm surprised no one in the rap field has sampled the music from "Let em in" yet, because it's funky as I don't know what. Just thought I'd throw out these few none l42 thoughts. Now back to our regularly scheduled broadcast .... Jeez, that's right. I'm a huge AWB fan, so that's why it sounded familiar. As for their name, they adapted it from something a friend had said. He had been stationed in Africa, and, according to them, was known for saying things in a humorous way. Anyway, he said that where he was stationed was "too hot for the average white man." They took it from there. >Style Council project (which brought us gems such as "My Ever Changing Moods", "The Lodgers" and "How She Threw it all Away".)
