(hope > you don't mind me "volunteering" you, Vince!) -Eric] Not at all, Eric, 's why I'm here. :-) :-) I'd definitely be interested in putting them up on the Home Page -- I've been thinking of putting up a "Virtual Concert" to simulate the audio-visual experience, using RealAudio. So conceivably we could have Mike's pictures with accompanying sound clips from "Physical Presence" -- preferably the song being played when the photo was taken (if Mike's memory is good enough ... :-) People could see, and listen, and get a sense of "being there". I've seen this done other places on the Web and I think it's a fascinating idea. Mike, do you have access to a scanner? Much to my surprise, I was in a shopping center where there is a men's clothiers called 'Structure'. This chain typically plays cutting edge groove over their sound system. I'm sitting there looking at some shirts and all of a sudden I hear ".....Radio Nova...."--it's a French program I'm sure many of you are familiar with. They started playing 'Turn It On'... I almost started crying, it was wonderful to hear that song, in public, over a nice sound system. There were people bouncing and nodding their heads to the beat...probably people who have never even heard of Level 42... ...what delight. Funk never dies--no matter the age. Level 42 is alive... Hansen" Date: Sun, 3 Sep 1995 23:29:36 -0400 (EDT) Key kidz... well for all those that are just *dying* to know the answers to my "name that song" quiz, here goes! 1. "Telephone line - bad connection... and I'm half asleep" This applies to me, late at night, dialed up to my ISP via PPP, trying to debug the mailing list software! There's certainly a tune on this album that everyone's heard (or at least a piece of it). Average White Band, "Person to Person", from the self-titled debut album, 1974. This is a straight-up 70's-style old-skool funky album. You'll also note that the lead singer's name is Hamish Stuart, which gives you an insight into how they chose their band's name. The clue here, "There's certainly a tune on this album that everyone's heard (or at least a piece of it)", is a reference to one of their best-known song, "Pick up the Pieces" - an unbelievably smokin' track. 2. [dialog between two people that is overdubbed to a song] "So how big is it now?!" "Well, if I told you, I would be lying, because it would be bigger already..." The only thing I can say about this song is that is has to do with large numbers and fish eggs. (This one's for you, Laz!) Thomas Dolby, the Googooplexus/Cube Creature Cavier mix of "May the Cube be With You", from a tough-to-find 12" vinyl original release (i.e., several years before Aliens Ate My Buick). The dialogue here is acutally between Thomas and (believe it or not) George Clinton - the Grandfather of Funk, head wacko of Parliament. The line just before "So how big is it now?!" is (George) "There's this cube... and it's forever growing". The hint (once you see the remix name) is pretty obvious. 3. "The sunny sand we ran along, Everyday began upon, The summer's kiss of love and adventure" This is a tribute to the soon-to-be-over summer :-( Well, whether Ro or Tal, there's a connection with a "bot" in there somewhere (more points for the Ro, though!) Paul Weller, "Amongst Butterflies", from the self-titled debut album, 1992. For those of you unenlightened to the Paul Weller/Jam/Style Council phenomenon, this album is a *must* have. This song, in particular, is a very tasty selection with a James Brown-style moovin' interlude tossed in for good measure. Along with L42, Paul is one of the *really* good talents to come out of the UK in recent years. I'd recommend this album on spec to anyone. The hint comes from "Ro-bot", as in the movie "Robocop", where the lead actor's name was Peter Weller, and "Tal-bot", as in Mick Talbot, who was Paul's cohort in the Style Council project (which brought us gems such as "My Ever Changing Moods", "The Lodgers" and "How She Threw it all Away".) 4. "Where does it go from here, is it down to the lake I fear?" Hints? This has something to do with an activity I engage in roughly 10 times a year, and the song can be expressed easily in the C programming language. Haircut 100, "Love Plus One", from their debut album "Pelican West", 1982. This is one of these early MTV bands that most people have heard of but maybe not _heard_. Anyways, this song is of the classic 80's flavor, to be cooked up along with a pinch of China Crisis, Talk Talk, Tears for Fears, Spandau Ballet and some Sade for seasoning. Hec, you may find this album as a super-saver or in the cutout bin - a definite steal. People will remark "Wow! I can't believe you have this album!" *Congrats* to Andy for being the only one to get this one (or *any* one!) Ok, so I'm working on a new batch :-). I guess I need to make them _easier_... Stay tuned! In other news, I drove down to New York City on Saturday for a wedding... I'd like to inform all NE motorists that Connecticut highway police *now* use laser speed detection :-( Time for a new radar detector. Happy Labor Day! (for the non-US, Monday is "Labor Day", a federal holiday - no work!) -Eric
