There's some wicked stuff on there, especially "Armageddon" and the tracks with vocals by Dr. Fiorella Terenzi. -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo @ swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #14 From: "Paul O'Dell" Date: Fri, 01 Sep 95 10:43:25 PST In response to Lolita. L42 played Baystreet around 1987. In response to Rob Steen's question: >From talking to people in guitar shops Mark King doesn't seem to be >very well known or held in high >regard over here, is this true? He doesn't seem to be as well known in the US. Unless of course you have great musical taste. By the way, are you a programmer? Paul ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #14 From: Henrod @ aol.com Date: Fri, 1 Sep 1995 15:24:50 -0400 I was at the Bay Street gig that Paul was at, and as I told him I saw them twice more that same summer of 1987. Once at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT, and once at the Ritz in NYC where I got backstage (thanx to a good friend at PolyGram) and got them all to autograph my ticket stub. It was quite a night. I also bootlegged the Toad's Place show. I, too, saw them open for Winwood at MSG, but at the time was way more into Winwood. That changed! -=Scott=- ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #14 From: fortnum @ wat.hookup.net (Rich Fortnum) Date: Fri, 1 Sep 1995 10:04:14 -0400 >> Is there anybody out there besides me who thinks The Chinese Way is a killer >> track? >> ...Alex... > >Probably. But they seem to be a minority. Maybe we should take a poll or >something; I'm curious also. I don't like Chinese Way, because it's like a broken record. Over and over and over. Too much chanting. Can there really be only 21 of us red-blooded UK subscribers? Still, I fancy our chances in a straight fist fight with a combined Norway/Sierra Leone team. By the way, can we stop squabbling about whether Chinese Way is good or not? It's all getting a bit pretentious and purist (not to mention heretical). It's just a song by Level 42! (with some damn fine fingering and Saint Mike of Lindup's vocals are good too - though not as good as in 'Silence') When we start to get carried away and take things too seriously remember the words of MK himself, "People think I'm some drinking, drug-taking Git, and I'm not....I'm just a Git...I'm just a Git from the Isle of Wight" "The world's me oyster, I can dip in and 'ave a basin full of anywhere I fancy" - Tony Hancock, The Radio Ham. ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #14 From: fsteama @ macline.co.uk (Mike Goode/Smiljka Surla) Date: Fri, 1 Sep 1995 22:00:27 +0000 Here are some completely unrelated items: 1) Did anybody know that Mark King has a younger brother (I can't remember his name at the moment) who also plays bass. He can be seen playing in and around London in a friend of mines group, 'The Ray Rich Band'. The music? Jazz, soul, r&b - pretty competant stuff but no original compositions. He's a bloody good bassist, though he doesn't appear to follow Mark's penchant for a bit of slap. If anybody is interested, I'll get some more details. 2) I'm pretty new to the list so maybe this one has already been dealt with... here goes anyway. Has anyone heard the news that Mark King is forming a band with Carl Palmer? A mouthwatering combination if true... 3) Here's another bit of name dropping - someone recently mentioned Corduroy (ajd @ robots.ox.ac.uk). I was at art college with both their drummer and guitarist (twins, Ben and Scott Addison) and I distinctly remember both of them poo-pooing L42 round about the time of the first album. Don't let this put you off Corduroy though, they're good. 4) While we're giving recommendations out, I suggest that you all track down an album by a guy called Jerry Playle. Its jazzy, funky, melodic and deserves to be huge. The album is called 'Beyond Silence' on the 33 Records label (address - 33/35 Guilford St, Luton LU1 2NQ, UK). Its all instrumental stuff - live, the music sounds like early L42 with a guitarist (no offence to Boon). On the CD its a bit more controlled and mellow but superb nonetheless. 5) Lastly, I have a set of photos which I took of L42 during the recording of A Physical Presence at Woolich Coronet some years back. My brother and I attended the gig (we got the tickets from the fan club if I remember correctly) and I took a couple of rolls of film for an art college photography project. The results were pretty good (we had seats right at the front). Has anybody a suggestion what I could do with the pics - it seems such a waste to leave them hidden away in an album. [!!Scan them!! and either Vince or I will put them up on the WWW... Any of you have any idea what this is? To me it sounds like the "Forever Now" album with three bonus tracks and a new cover, could two of these be tracks from the Japanese release? Please let me know! Regards, Jonathan ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #14 From: LittleHalo @ aol.com Date: Fri, 1 Sep 1995 21:43:13 -0400 Hi everyone! I can't tell you all how happy I am that there are so many Levelheads out there. I thought I was so alone. Try being in high school from 1991-93 and responding "Level 42" when asked, "What's your favorite band?" Let me tell you I got a lot of bewildered looks. I finally have the time to introduce myself to you all. My name is Angel and I have resided in So.Cal, USA for all of my 19 (almost 20) years. I first became a Level 42 fan when I saw them on Saturday Night Live (1986?) playing "Something About You." It was back in Mark's long, black trenchcoat days. Unfortunately, that was the only song they played as there were two musical guests that night, the other one being E.G. Daily doing her dance classic (?), "Say It" (title?). BTW, now E.G. is an acoustic guitar rocker playing around L. A. with my uncle. Who knew. Anyway, has anyone else seen that episode of SNL? I've never seen it rerun. After that, the CD buying adults in my family obtained World Machine & A Physical Presence and my Level 42 collecting rampage went off! Now for some questions and responses to previous posts: I, for one, love "The Chinese Way" for its jammin' bass line and especially the part, "So many years ago heroes ruled the world...cruel world." For the people who are bummed because they played it so much, well, they probably played it because so many people enjoyed it and I'm sorry that you are of the kind that stops liking a song just because you've heard it a lot. I don't mean to dispute on that so on to the next topic... How is one able to get the Remixes album with "Take A Look" on it. I got it (w/o TAL) on import from the Virgin Megastore so its surely not an American mishap is it? [I'll let you know in 2 weeks when mine arrives... I ordered it from Audiophile Imports in Maryland (410-628-7601) -Eric] To Elson and Eric: I've often referred to L42 as LFT because that was the accepted term in the long gone Fan Club. Of course this Club was based in London with L42's management affiliated with it so maybe that is the more widely used term globally speaking. You never know. Anyway, I was just kind of put off by your desire to make everyone here conform to the way you want them to refer to the one of the best band's in the world. Does it matter? [nope! - just so long as your not referred to the band "Long Footed Toads"... -Eric :-] To anyone who needs Forever Now, I got my copy "With Compliments" from RCA/BMG UK because my wonderful Levelheaded mom called them up and complained about its non-U.S. release so they just sent it to us! If enough Americans call to bug them, they might even (re)release it here for everyone to enjoy. The phone # there is 071 973 0011. Unfortunately, my FN version lacks the extra tracks, it only has 11. To Mike Petty: I agree that Nick Beggs of Kaja... is/was an exceptional bass player and might I add, a better singer than Limahl. Lastly (Really!), does anyone out there know where Level 42 was exactly in New Orleans when Mark says "There was a snake swimming out there...."? Please let me know as my mom is on a tour that will make a stop there on Sept. 12 and she wishes to pay homage. Thanks for reading and congrats to you all on your impeccable taste in music. Love In A Peaceful World, Angel ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #14 From: "Friesen, Alex" Date: Fri, 01 Sep 1995 15:23:14 -0500 Hey Flanagan, I picked up the disc the day it was released simply on Thomas Dolby's past record. I've got Astronauts and Heretics and Aliens Ate My Buick, and was expecting something vaguely similar. "--bzzzt--" Wrong!! It is a fairly good album, and I played the snot out of it for the first three weeks or so, but it isn't really an album of "pop" tunes as you might expect. What it is is a soundtrack to the third(?) in the series of Mind's Eye computer animation compilations. I picked up the VHS version of this some weeks after I bought the disc, and I must say it is quite impressive (though doomed to become out-of-date quickly at the rate techno is moving). In short, if you're going to pick up either the music alone or the video, I would recommend the video. And to stop the wrath of those of you reading this and thinking "what the $#@% does this have to do with our beloved Level 42", here is the connection between Dolby and L42: Dolby has produced Prefab Sprout, who's drummer Neil Conti(?) briefly played with our Level headed lads after Phil Gould left (the first time). ...Alex... "...if a song was a road, I would ride through the night to you..." (Thomas Dolby: Valley Of The Mind's Eye)
