IMHO they have to be the best UK band currently recording. 100 and rising is excellent - Barumba being my favourite. The 'Jazz Funk' album which I have the original on vinyl (and sells for £20-30 pounds sterling in second hand record shops) is as its title suggests, an excellent example of early jazz-funk. There are a couple naff tracks, but the instrumentals are excellent. Going back further than Incognito, some of the band were in Light of The World which were also responsible for some classics. There is a CD out over here that has the best of early LOTW, Beggar & Co (the rest of LOTW that didn't go to Incognito) and Incognito tracks. While were are on the subject of early jazz-funk, is anyone else into the likes of Shakatak (1st LP only - the rest is naff), Morrissey Mullen, Central Line, Cayenne and so on? Well, I did see L42's last ever gig on the 14th Oct 1994, and yes they have broken up. I never said I saw them last month, I said that had seen Incognito last month, and bloody excellent they were too. BTW I agree that Incognito's first album 'Jazz Funk' is definitely an early unreleased L42 album :) It kicks ass in a funky sort of way. That was prolly me, as I mentioned that Nick Beggs (ex-Kajagoogoo and Chapman stick officianado...so yea you're right) was a guest teacher at the BIT (Bass Institute of Technology) in Acton, which I was attending at the time. Mike Brooks then lent me a tape with 'Ellis, Beggs and Howard' on it, so yea again. I've been enjoying the list and have decided to add a few comments. In response to Paul O'Del's questions about Mark King's thumb tape, yes it is ordinary black tape, last year during the Forever Now tour he started throwing the tape onto the audience after the show and I knew someone who caught it so I got to have a look and try it on. Surprise, surprise, Mark has quite a large thumb, bigger than mine anyway. I'm a bass player too, heavily influenced by Mr. King and I've found that I prefer not to use tape but a friend uses the tape drummers use on some drum-sticks and he likes it. From talking to people in guitar shops Mark King doesn't seem to be very well known or held in high regard over here, is this true? Hope to hear from you all soon, Rob. "... I have the groove, for my protection..." ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #13 From: PLFlanagan @ aol.com Date: Thu, 31 Aug 1995 17:03:52 -0400 In a message dated 95-08-31 06:53:09 EDT, you write: >Does anyone know if that is black electrical tape wrapped around his thumb? So far as I know, it is. When I played bass, I tried it out. Besides helping to keep the skin on your thumb when doing heavy-duty slapping, it seemed to give a fuller sound to the strings. (esp. your comment, Pat!!!) Oh, you'll be all right. Just cry it out. >"Telephone line - bad connection... and I'm half asleep" Isn't that from "Radio Silence" by Thomas Dolby (off the kickin' album Golden Age Of Wireless)? Anyone heard Gateway To The Mind's Eye by T. Dolby? It came out last year to little publicity, and now it's in the local Best Buys cutout bin. If it's good, I'll drop the $5. Otherwise, there was this Earth, Wind & Fire CD in the same bin... Anyway, for some reason, Dolby comes to mind when I think of that line. I'll pass on the others. I recognize them, but my brain's too addled from old age to remember the exact details. [Duh! --bzzzt-- No, that's incorrect. But GAOW *is* a kickin' album - and certainly another of my "top 10"... in fact, I was planning on starting a Dolby list until I discovered that there was one already. Even though the quote isn't from Dolby, you may be onto something here... I believe I can convince a few people here (who > haven't heard it) that Incognito's "Jazz Funk" was actually an "early > Level 42 album that never saw release." I agree with Elson 100%. As soon as I bought and heard it I thought of Level 42 (the album) and The Early Tapes. The thumping and plucking you hear on JazzFunk is definitely reminiscent of Mark. Anyone who is a big fan of the earlier L42 stuff will like this album a lot. --- From: "Paul O'Dell" > They played a bar on Long Island New York called "Bay Street" in Sag Harbor. > That had > to be one of the greatest thrills of my life. I used to go to Sag Harbor almost every weekend in the summer a few years back, and stayed two blocks from Bay Street.
