I believe I can convince a few people here (who haven't heard it) that Incognito's "Jazz Funk" was actually an "early Level 42 album that never saw release." I could only wonder whether it was Mike Lindup himself who played keyboards on "Parisienne Girl." > Oh well - I just picked up my tickets to see Jamiroquai on Sept 5th! Yippee! > -Eric Cool... though I heard from many people that Jamiroquai sucks in concert. One guy said that the sound mix was lousy and some others attribute it to the fact that Jason Kay likes to get stoned before every gig. I heard their didgeridoo player gets more applause than him. Still, it's probably worthwhile, as long as you focus your attention on Mark King, Jr. (aka Stuart Zender) that boy is incredible on bass. And he's only a couple years *younger* than us! They also have Jakko's new album, I have yet to buy it and in general am hesitant to buy it. Any way the store is called the Sound Exchange, on Rte.23 North in Wayne, NJ. Has anybody heard Boon's new album? How could i get a copy in the future? Dan ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #12 From: "Paul O'Dell" Date: Wed, 30 Aug 95 10:34:06 PST Hi My name is Paul and I'm a BASS Player/Programmer from Long Island New York. Typical of most Americans I started listening to L42 after the World Machine album came out. Actually what got me hooked was seeing them open for Steve Winwood. L42 blew him off the stage. After the concert I started looking for all their albums. I am proud to say I have all of them except for the new one. In response to Brent's posting, I also went to see them on the Madonna tour. But, I didn't see them opening for Madonna. They played a bar on Long Island New York called "Bay Street" in Sag Harbor. That had to be one of the greatest thrills of my life. I was only 10 to 20 feet away from Mark King. Was anyone else at that show on Long Island? Being a bass player I have to say that Mark King has been one of my biggest influences. Does anyone know if that is black electrical tape wrapped around his thumb? Has anyone noticed that some of the older albums are listed as out of print in the US? I noticed this while using one of those computers in Borders Books and Music. One last thing before I go. I am a little confused in regards to a message from "F.Frederick Skitty". He said that he saw them play last month in England. I thought the band had broken up. What's the deal? Talk to you soon. Anyway, a few things: Has anyone listened to Corduroy? They're a band on the Acid Jazz label who are pretty good I reckon. Quite funky, but unfortunately not especially bass-oriented. I'm also well into Ice Cube at the moment and the G-Funk rap sort of stuff. I was very interested to read about the appearance of Nik Kershaw with Mark in a charity supergroup in one of the infamous BobC videos. I've seen the Prince's Trust ones where he plays with Mr. Clapton, etc. which is good (especially "Behind the Mask" with slap bass.) Anyone know what NK is up to now (last thing I heard of him was on Elton John's "Duets" album). Following the discussion of the remixes album, if the "Children Say" mix is the one I've heard with exceptionally chunky bass I'll probably have to get it as I've wanted to hear that again for ages. Bye, Andy. ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #12 From: "Friesen, Alex" Date: Wed, 30 Aug 1995 08:55:54 -0500 Amanda, did you get credits at Virginia Tech in your MA in Professional Communication program for communicating so well on this list? ;-) Bill, I must add my vote to the Dump The Non Level-Headed Wife side. Eric's quote is from Donald Fagen's "Walk Between The Raindrops" from his Nightfly album (a must-have). Next question? Cliff, I was at that Maple Leaf Gardens show you mentioned (September 12, 1987). Apparently that was only their second show without boon, and the sub guitarist was quite impressive considering he had no rehearsals. Anybody know who that guitarist is? Is there anybody out there besides me who thinks The Chinese Way is a killer track. ...Alex... "...we've got provisions, and lots of beer..." Duh. Walk Between Raindrops, Donald Fagen. You can do better than that. >My wife, who hates L42, etc. I feel for you. I'm in the exact same boat. And let me make it clear to anyone on the list who's not in this predicament, it's a hardscrabble existence. :D TCOY, Pat ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #12 From: "Eric J. Hansen" Date: Thu, 31 Aug 1995 01:03:47 -0400 (EDT) Rarrrrrrrrr!!!!!! So I post a small "challenge" - guess the quote - and as you can see above, the previous messages sum up to one big _slam_ fest! Hey!!! That's NOT ALLOWED!!! (esp. your comment, Pat!!!) Good thing that Internet etiquette codes specify that list adminstrators are exempt from "cyberbuck" debts :-) Ok, so first a few comments on messages in this digest: [Elson wrote] > Eric, I'm shocked. Hmmm. It just didn't do it for me, but I only listened to it a few times. Maybe it would grow on me, but I can't imagine that it would ever [for me] compare to their newer stuff. [Andy wrote] > Surely "Walk between the raindrop" from Donald Fagen's album "The Nightfly" > (one of my all time favourite records of all time, mate.) [Alex wrote] > Eric's quote is from Donald Fagen's "Walk Between The Raindrops" from his > Nightfly album (a must-have). Next question? YES, this album rocks. It's been on my "Top 10" since I bought it about five years ago. A *highly* polished album with a killer musician lineup and top-notch engineering. The newer Kamakiriad is good, but doesn't earn the rare commendation of "steller", which Nightfly does. [Alex also writes] > Is there anybody out there besides me who thinks The Chinese Way is a killer > track. I actually got this song as a 12" single in the U.S. just after Worldmachine came out. It was the only other thing by L42 I could find at the time, so I was obviously crazy about it. Now, having owned/heard nearly everything they've done, I'd say that The Chinese Way is not my favorite, but it certainly isn't a bad track (although how many "bad" tracks are there?!). > "...we've got provisions, and lots of beer..." (no, it's not L42) Ahh, a favorite pre-party quotation/salutation from my wacky college days... ALRIGHT NOW... a few more "guess this quote"'s. I should mention that I didn't just pick out obscure stuff that I knew no one would get (except Lazlo, that is... how many albums _do_ you have, anyways?!). Instead, these quotes are from artists/songs/albums that are really worth checking out if you haven't already. I'm sure others will agree (assuming that they're not *too* annoyed from not being able to figure them out!) 1. "Telephone line - bad connection... and I'm half asleep" This applies to me, late at night, dialed up to my ISP via PPP, trying to debug the mailing list software! There's certainly a tune on this album that everyone's heard (or at least a piece of it). 2. [dialog between two people that is overdubbed to a song] "So how big is it now?!" "Well, if I told you, I would be lying, because it would be bigger already..." The only thing I can say about this song is that is has to do with large numbers and fish eggs. (This one's for you, Laz!) 3. "The sunny sand we ran along, Everyday began upon, The summer's kiss of love and adventure" This is a tribute to the soon-to-be-over summer :-( Well, whether Ro or Tal, there's a connection with a "bot" in there somewhere (more points for the Ro, though!) 4. "Where does it go from here, is it down to the lake I fear?" Hints? This has something to do with an activity I engage in roughly 10 times a year, and the song can be expressed easily in the C programming language. Sorry if these are too *hard* (smirk)... -Eric ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #12 From: Mikep3099 @ aol.com Date: Thu, 31 Aug 1995 00:58:07 -0400 Hey everybody, It's me bonehead, Somehow I inadvertently sent my longassed post yesterday(BobC's tapes, Remixs&questions) to Eric's email instead of the list.
