I was in the Gap a month ago and heard, of all things, Freedom Someday... My wife, who hates L42, promptly left the store, and I of course stood in the corner triumphantly playing the ever popular Mark King "Air" bass.... what a wonderful thing that was. Has *anyone* seen any of the 2 boxed sets by the fellows? I would love to have one, but I cannot seem to find anyone who has even heard of them.. thanks bill bill_wilson @ attpls.net billwi @ asymetrix.com ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #10 From: akb02 @ rs1.rrz.uni-koeln.de (Dirk Pilat) Date: Tue, 29 Aug 1995 18:34:38 +0200 Dear Levelheads, yes, english pop has a new mailing list: I'm proud to present the all new Matt Bianco Maillist. I've used LFT instead of L42 back home for a good while with no real objection from anyone. My point is, wouldn't you agree that perhaps it's a slightly different type of english used on the other side of the atlantic than is used over here ??? However I'm not one to argue over such things as this (my vokabulary is phar phrom ferpect!!) and as I have great respect for all Level 42 fans I will pay more attention to using an American English (like the song! anyone??). More later Dudes. "..Love is the ship we all hope to steer..! Julian ;-) [entire Digest #11 trimmed out... *please* refrain from including unnecessary text in your messages! FAIT ACCOMPLI being called *almost* as good as the Vince>BobC videos?! Bob I *really* need to take a look at these.. Please let me quantify that statement. I only have tape 1 from Bob's collection and that tape has very much the same "feel" as the FA video. Others on the list have commented on his other videos in a positive manner also. Please take into consideration that I may be giving BoBC a little more credit than is due simply because of the sacrifices he has made and the sheer volume of his stuff. Take care, Rolf ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #10 From: lolita @ interserv.com Date: Mon, 28 Aug 95 06:11:50 PDT On to the REAL reason for this post! A couple of days ago, Alex Friesen posted a reply in which he stated that the song The Chinese Way was controversial. I have never heard of this before, can anyone let me in on this? The reason The Chinese Way is controversial is that quite a few LevelHeads detest the song (I happen to be one of them), basically for being overplayed (at almost every live concert) at the expense of better L42 tunes and having insipid lyrics. Some people happen to say that it is one of their favorites. All in all, the song seems to provoke extreme reactions in various listeners. ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #10 From: "Afua Preston" Organization: New York University Libraries Date: Mon, 28 Aug 1995 08:43:41 EST > --Did anyone else get filled with anger and disbelief when VH1 failed to play > even one L42 song during their "Videos from A to Z" weekend special. They DID play "Something About You" and "Lessons in Love". -Afua ********************************************* * Da Roma in giu comincia L'Africa * ********************************************* ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #10 From: PLFlanagan @ aol.com Date: Mon, 28 Aug 1995 16:47:44 -0400 The only comment I have on Chinese Way is that it sucks, but otherwise... (why did they seem to play it at EVERY concert, and, in addition, play it at 200 times the original tempo, and, more amazingly, everyone in the crowd was INTO it? Some things defy explanation.) Follow Me: Great song, but, unfortunately, I don't think they did a studio version of it. I'd love to hear it if they did. Finally, let's see who agrees with me: I think the live version of "A Physical Presence" (the song, not the double live album) that was on the flip side of one of their singles is one of their slammin'est live tracks, and way better than the studio version, which I still think is one of their best. I have no idea why; I love the track, personally. Okay, I can see how some people may think it's politically incorrect, and visions of Kung Fu (the TV show) do come to mind when I hear lyrics like: "standing at the master's side / then with patience he confides / secret knowledge, sacred ways / pearls of wisdom from the dragon days". But it's got a killer groove (gee, how unusual for L42 ;-) ) and interesting lyrics, so bollocks to the PC crowd. The only change I make as I sing along is to replace "Peking" with "Beijing". On another note, I happened to be checking the L42 section of the huge downtown Toronto HMV when I was shocked to find two copies of Forever Now and three copies of a CD single I had never seen before (don't get excited, it was just Lessons In Love and Something About You). In the video section I found Family Of Five, which I have never before seen in Canada. Either there's a hell of a sales guy out there flogging obscure material onto record stores, or somebody in the HMV megabucks chain has the taste and courage to take a chance on this stuff. I hope it's the latter, 'cause my favourite CD importer just went out of business. :-( ...Alex... "my fly's wide open / I feel a breeze..."
