Much of the track is so sparse that all you drummers and bass >players out there can get an excellent idea of what is really going on >rhythm section wise. The original (Staring At The Sun) version buries Mark >King quite deeply, and I for one was surprised to hear all the little fills >and rhythmic trickery (i.e. classic King) going on. Yes, yes, yes! I thought the song was a minor (very minor) gem on the album, not bad to listen to. The remix really unfolds the song, especially that sharp little bass solo at the end of the song. Every bass player should listen to that solo as an example of how to liven up a plain ol' 4/4 thump line. However, I believe the true gems of the remix album were the Children Say and Take A Look remixes. Children Say: Always was one of my favorites of theirs, because the bassline is a bit unusual and fun to play. However, the slapped and funked up bassline from the remix is the true shit (pardon my Slavik). Actually, when I used to play that song with some friends of mine, I used to slap and embellish the whole line throughout the song, but not quite as good as Mark did it, of course. Take A Look was always, I thought, one of their overlooked great songs that should have been a hit over here (except it probably wouldn't have fit any "popular" radio format, save for adult contemporary). I can play the remix over, and over, and over... Ok, I'm done being philosophical. It's a great video (almost as good as Bobs) and I ordered it through Blockbuster Video. It took about 6 weeks. Write for a review if you want. --I heard "Children Say" at T.G.I.F. Fridays in Portland. Maine. It was L42's own version and part of a mix of other pop tunes that the restaraunt was playing. Local phenomenom or nationwide? --Did anyone else get filled with anger and disbelief when VH1 failed to play even one L42 song during their "Videos from A to Z" weekend special. I was simply appauled. Someone needs to be slapped! --And now, a brief commentary. Who works for the record companies anyway, Satan? How can they in good consience relase FN in England and Japan and wherever else in the world and not in the U.S? And who deceided that Japan should get two extra songs that no one else in the world gets? Satan. Just put all the songs on all the CD's. Damn, couldn't we at least be able to simply order it at our local store. Are we asking too much!? I feel better now, thanks. --There's going to be a L42 convention in Boston! Well, not really, sorry, but wouldn't it be great. Okay, who want's to organize it? Maybe we should all just go out to eat and hand the owner our copy of L42 songs to play on his system. Then after that we could Mob the local recored store and demand that more L42 albums be sold and made available there. Who's free next week? --Gosh I wish this had spell check. I have the Zurich cd, but i though they two were the same. > Let me know if anyone has any ideas on the subjects. "Urban Fascination" is actually their debut Polydor album, better known as "Level 42." The title was changed for the Japanese market because the number "42" is considered to be somewhat of an unlucky number. Tell that to Douglas Adams! Elson ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #8 From: Rack1SPC @ aol.com Date: Sat, 26 Aug 1995 22:51:00 -0400 Since I'm not sure if my message got out before, I'm gonna try this again. There was some kind of interuption after digest #3 for me so this might have been heard by some before. I have finally aquired Forever Now and have the following comments... This album takes about three listens to begin to appreciate. This may be why it was not released to the US. The music doesn't contain those typically simple hook driven songs that American radio is pushed by. Also, this album to me has a different feel than I would have expected. I mean, listen to "All over you" with it's live overdubs and it's a song that doesn't fit what I've heard in the past. Or how about the title track, with that brass section? The lead guitar is much more in the backgound (except for "Don't Bother Me") on this group of songs compared to lets say Gauranteed and Staring at the Sun. It's one of those rare albums that the more you play the better it gets! More on FN later. Does anyone know if the song "Follow Me" on Physical Presence was released as a studio version? I don't recall seeing it anywhere else? Well, see y'all later. Thanks again Eric for getting everything going again. I hope its clear sailing from here on out! 424242424242424242424242424242424242424242Sean ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #8 From: Brent Kroon Date: Sat, 26 Aug 1995 15:23:13 -0700 (PDT) Great to see this baby back up and running! Anyways, just a few tidbits about the message (I can't remember who sent it) on Incognito. I Highly recommend the purchase of "100 and rising". Anyone who enjoys L42 will enjoy this platter. From the first tune "Where did we go wrong?", it is obvious that this is an album full of great musicianship, strong melodies and deep grooves. Very infectious! Another thing: I observed the discussions a little while back about the varying CD prices in different countries, and yesterday I found out first hand. I travelled to Victoria, BC and stopped at a shop called Lyle's place on Yates St. Outstanding prices. I bought 3 discs for about $20 U.S. Decent L42 selection, too. Someone also had mentioned something about Level 42 opening for Madonna back in 86 or 87. This musical travesty is unfortunately true. I don't think much of the crowd at the show here in Seattle were ready for the 42 when they came. I'll see if I can dig up a review from the paper. All for Now, Brent ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #8 From: rmcmahon @ canuck.com (Ron McMahon) Date: Sun, 27 Aug 1995 00:01:28 -0600 Greetings fellow Level 42 fans! I have been passively participating in this group for a number of months now (great to see the list back up!) but this is my first post. I have been a L42 fan since 1988, when my old roommate introduced me to his copy of RITF, since then I have been working to collect as much CD based songs by L42 as possible. My only regret was passing up a CD single from Guaranteed when it first came out, I haven't seen it since. On to the REAL reason for this post! A couple of days ago, Alex Friesen posted a reply in which he stated that the song The Chinese Way was controversial. I have never heard of this before, can anyone let me in on this? "I've met a girl with smiling eyes, full of love and worldly wise, she told me she knew what to do, to put the memory of you - out of sight and out of mind." KALHOUN is the word...now everybody's heard - KALHOUN!
